I actually think Erik DID exist at some point. I've heard evidence about the Opera Garnier in Paris (the opera house that inspired Leroux's book) has a chamber there that only people who speak REALLY good French can go down to.
@BarrelsPolesandJack I believe that as well. I've heard people say that he looked more like "Elephant Man" though. That's another good movie. Very old and very sad. I believe he exists in the hearts and minds of musicians and singers though, especially in music itself. I can never sing without thinking he's there in the theater. I know it sounds weird.
There must have been a hella lot of competition between Antonio Banderaz and Gerard Butler for who got to play the phantom in the movie. They're both amazing!!! :D
I want to spit on ALW's shoes right now. Did you hear about the Phantom sequel? Did you hear it's plot? C'mon... ALW... he is a master at musical theater. Why did he have to ruin it....?
@StarfireRobinLover The show has NOT come out yet. GIVE IT A CHANCE. Im tired of people giving Love Never Dies a bad name when it HASNT come out yet. ALW is a Musical genious! I think he knows what hes doing...so give it a chance!
@StarfireRobinLover I don't think the sequel will be too bad, just have some faith in ALW... I'm just REALLY confused. I mean...um... did Erik rape Christine or something??? cuz in the sequel they have a son named Pierre but i don't recall them ever making love in the movie OR the book by Gaston Leroux... hmm
@heheCRAZYhehe From what I've read when the Phantom and Christine reunite it's revealed that they had an affair the night before Christine and Raoul's wedding and that is how Pierre came into being. (get it? came? sorry, couldn't help it) But in all seriousness the Phantom of the Opera musical was based off a great book so i'm quite interested to see how ALW will do with an original storyline on the Phantom. I am greatly looking forward to see the play or the movie or however i'll see it.
@blistex4 Love Never Dies ( the socalled sequel, stageshow) is not an original story by ALW - its based on the Phantom of Manhattan, I think by Frederick Forsyth. And the Phantoms sons called Gustav.
@MrsJosephMerrick Yes, forgive me, I'm horrible with names >.< However the Phantom of Manhattan is based on one of ALW earlier attempts to make a Phantom sequel. ALW partner in one of those projects decided to not put the idea to waste and made it into a book. (which from what i hear is quite dreadfull) And so many years later ALW decides to revive that project and ya, he might've used the book as a refference but it is overall an original storyline.
@blistex4 Oh, ok! I didnt know! Interesting! Ive never read it btw, saw it in a bookshop absolutely years ago, and wondered what it was...heard it was rubbish anyway...I want to see the new show out of curiosity. At least the musics meant to be great.( from what Ive heard ).....
There is a lot of evidence supporting the story of the phantom of the opera. It isn't known if the events of the novel did actually happen the way they were written but the characters were real even if they didn't have the exact same names. there was a christine and a raoul and there most defenitely was an Erik (obviously).
Exactly, and if you really do research properly you will find quotes from people that lived during the time speaking about a man that lived under the opera house. Then there is the actual facts that a engineer working on building the opera house asked garnier if he could stay under it, there is proof. There just isn't specific facts, ie specific names of people, places, and times, etc.
I'm doughting that gerry butler commited suicide........OBTW he is my alltime fav phantom!!!!!!! ffffaaarrrr better than michael crawford...and emmy ffaarrr better than sarah brightman! :D
I feel Sarah Brightman is far superior to Emmy Rossum.
The video she was in was hideous, but that was BEFORE the real musical was made, and was just a demonstration. Besides, it was 23 years ago. What do you expect?!
Sarah is obviously far more talented and skilled, in my opinion.
Not trying to be a jerk but i think all of the other versions pale in comparison to the 2003 version with emmy rossum and gerard butler. He does the best job of being the phantom. And HelpmeIbored, your entirely right, and dont be ashamed. Gerard's voice is CRAZILY seductive, he entraps me also everytime i watch it. =D
if you read the authors note in the book of The Phantom of The Opera by Gaston Leroux you'll notice that he goes to saying on how the Phantom was actually REAL!!!!
The Phantom of the Opera was based on a real legend in the Paris Opera House. Legends usually have some basis in fact, so there may have been a Phantom, if not so romantacized as this one.
Also, after the first movie came out, a man fell in love with the beautiful lead violinist of the orchestra in New York (I think) and ended up strangling her and pushing her naked body down a four story laundry chute. The newspapers called him a "modernday phantom"
Not all of it. There was a myth about a ghost in the opera house before Gaston Leroux wrote it. It's mentioned in the introduction of the book I read, where it goes in depth on all Phantom-related stuff.
Just a thought - real legend? I'm not trying to be snarky, but it seems like a misnomer.
it's not a misnomer. I mean the book is written as though there was a myth about it already. There wasn't. There has never been any such myth. It's just the style in which the man writes. The prologue and everything is all party of the story. Story. Not real.
No offense, but I was laughing during the Sarah Brightman version. She herself is a good singer, but the Phantom was horrible. And then Raoul in the audience with a mullet.
I think it would be nice if Christines voice was a combination of Emmy Rossum/Sarah Brightman and for Erik (The phantom of you less phantom phans) to be Gerard Butlers voice. I think his voice is best because kind seductive. Dang, did I just type that?
I like the 2004 Phantom of the Opera.Def the one with Gerard Butler.I couldn't take the the Sarah Brightman version of the Phantom of the Opera seriously.I think I would be laughing the whole entire time becaus of the Phantom.Gerard*sigh* melt*sigh*.
Dear YouTube friends: Fantastic couple duet. Miss Sarah Brightman was a shining star and Señor Antonio Banderas was in his heyday. Event-making concert. It is a pity they did not perform any further. Congratulations!

I'm quite sure we agree on many things, such as Phantom is a great Musical, ALW is a genius, etc.
We just don't agree on the casting preferences ;)

we should argue with those who think that Cats are better
93duhopere 2 years ago
I love CATS actually, watched it not so long ago. It's definitely better in terms of humour and accessibility.
Not to mention it has one of the great songs ever made, "Memory".
So yeah, nothing really to argue about. Chances are, if you like Phantom, you'll like CATS, and vice versa.
