Landon Donovan is so much more than a goal scorer. There really is no one to compare him to on the US team. The closest thing I can think of is Andre Arshavin or Mikael Arteta. He has pace, power, composure and a cool head when finishing.

Jozy Altidore is your basic striker with a knack for positioning and a mean pair of boots but not nearly as versatile on the pitch.

Donovan, hands down, is the better player.

Here's a fact that usually get Mexicans irritated. The USA has forever played at a the talent level of Mongolia until recently and Mexico has been a contender (not a power) most of their history, going to the semis a few times. But in the span of two or three generations of player the USA has risen to contender standard with players all over Europe and upsetting powers on an every other basis. Donovan is clearly better now, but Altidore has the potential to surpass him and possibly becme truly world-class if he works at it. Altidore did his time in MLS and moved to Europe while he was still a teenager.

I personally don't care if MLS never becomes a top league. If foreign clubs continue to send scouts here to look at and bring our players over to play in the top leagues in Europe, all the better for soccer in the USA.

I think Donovan would do great in the Premiership or La Liga. He has speed, creativity and a great shot... he might not be a Fernando Torres or a Cristiano Ronaldo but I'd say he is good enough to play striker for some of the second tier teams like Everton, Fulham or Tottenham... He'll never be able to play for the big boys like Man U or Arsenal.

donovan has plenty of creativity, especially with his vision and passing. he always keeps the usa moving on the attack when he's passing and around the ball.

freddy has great creativity and skill, but he lacks severely on the defensive end, unlike donovan or beasley. he also is only 19(?), and he is getting little pt at monaco. he has also shown immaturity on the field, such as getting too flustered and making mistakes, and his decision making is off still...he'll get there though

because you prepare yourself to play for the national team, it's not like on the job training. you need to get better and above all, be in shape to earn a spot on the field for the national team, they aren't just granted to players b/c they aren't playing over in their clubs, because what's the use in using him for 10 or so minutes every couple of months? there isn't any, and it won't prepare him for a world cup...he needs solid playing time consistently for a club to earn a spot on the field
