  • OIL

  • It has not been covered for 10 million or even hundereds of thousands of years, the same Ice sheet that covered North America 5,000 years ago is still covering Atlantis...*cough cough* i mean Antartica.

What i do hope they find is species that have adapted to their new icy home, such as the deep dwelling creatures possibly around hydrothermal vents. Or better yet the remains of human habitation, boats, houses, heck even bodies.

This is Atlantis! under 4 miles of ice!

  • Down into the Abyss.

  • Or maybe Hitlers UFO base?

  • The fountain of youth?

  • I just hope they don't find al kaida down there..

  • how did they know there is a lake?

  • @millenium2003 H.A.A.R.P.

  • This is BULLSHIT all they are really lookinf for is OIL!!!!

  • Movie "The Thing" in real life.

  • Ah this is the kind of news I love.

  • @JesusFingeredBabies tons of gold and oil under the ice and snow and permafrost

  • @restlesspride666 WOW, CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALIST MUST HAVE YOU ON A HIT LIST:(

  • lake of madness! chtuhlu! dont go the old ones!

  • Dino water?

  • i kept waiting for him to lick the drill and smirk!

  • And this is how Aliens Vs. Predators start.

  • what if they bring back up an ancient virus ?

  • They will need to melt about 800 Cubic Metres of ice from -25 degrees Centigrade back to liquid water, and even forgetting about the re-freezing problem, this will take super Megawatts of CONTINUOUS power.

That Propane gas cylinder they took is just not going to be enough.

This is a SUPER - FAIL project.. He He He

  • @OPOCHKA I hope they fail too, I am wooting for nature to deal much deserved ass whupping.

  • @Wolfsbane909 Oh, it will soon enough. We haven't even begun to get a good taste of climate change.

  • @cleanhomer or maybe this is market advertisement for the upcoming remake of the horror movie "THE THING", imagine if they brought some life form/virus like that back up.

  • @OPOCHKA

This isn't some dude putting together some stunt in his backyard. These are scientists that have been working on these projects for years.

It's not like they don't have engineers who understand the properties of ice and water....

  • @oolong2

Yeah..Right . This project is just not going to work.

How are they going to prevent the water above the drilling cylinder, from re-freezing ?

When the drill head has gone 20 metres down, ( if it gets that far ) all the water at the top of the drill hole would have returned to solid ice.

Any 14 year old school boy would have foreseen this problem.

These highly educated " Scientists " should have asked one before they even started the project.

  • @OPOCHKA

"Any 14 year old school boy would have foreseen this problem."

Which is exactly why the scientists and engineers would as well...

    A quick Google search:

--"The minus-20-degrees-Celsius temperatures inside the borehole means that its diameter reduces by 0.6 cm per hour, as the water refreezes. This leaves a window of around 24 hours in which to conduct all of the experiments before the hole becomes too narrow."

Also I assume the flow of water keeps it from freezing while drilling.

  • now everybody is a monday morning QB.their scientists there is a great chance they know what their doing .lets hope they succeed

  • They will not be able to drill any further down, or even withdraw the drill head.

They should use an oil drilling derrick and cut the hole in the ice dry, using a hollow core drill, pulling out the ice cores every 5 metres.

This will give a smooth hole and will not fill up with fresh ice.

  • The major problem is that the once hot water in the hole just 3 metres above the drilling cylinder, when on it’s way down, will lose all it’s heat to the surrounding ice, and then that liquid water will freeze solid again.

This reformed ice will grip the hot water feed tube like a vice and prevent any further movement of the drilling head downwards.

  • maybe they will find an alien weapons

  • ~REPTILIANS LIVE THERE~

  • i bet they find life, possibly our succesors as top level predators on the planet one day long in the future.

  • Insert Neon Genesis Evangelion reference here.

  • This could be awesome, like new species etc! :p

  • They have to add the climate change at the end of any scientific video.....

  • @Mojo3192 dont tell me youre a denier? LOL

  • The pressure in the water of that lake is probably around 5000 pounds per square inch.

Assuming that there is a pocket of air on the lake surface, when that drill breaks through, it will be ejected back up the hole like a rocket.

If there ARE any living creatures in the lake, then the sudden decompression will kill all of them.

  • @OPOCHKA Why do you think that?

  • @pgunn01

Why do I think ......what ?

  • @pgunn01 Why do you think the pressure in the water will be that high?

  • the thing

  • Still looking for that Stargate in Antarctica. lmao

  • @admiralcrash1 yep you know it, never ever under estimate the power of human greed and selfishness

  • Comment removed

  • @OPOCHKA The ice will have reformed above the drill, I would have thought. And at 5000lbs/in2 the gas would be liquid :P

  • @danrayson

Ice reformed above the drill ..Exactly.

    What gas ?

  • @OPOCHKA lol and the water that is ejected could flood low-lying areas around the world and affect millions. lol

  • Fools! This will cause the Great Old Ones to awake from their long slumber. We are doomed! DOOOOOMMMMEEEDD!

  • Pandora's Box

  • If they find oil over there, suddenly an "unexpected terror-attack" from Eskimos will happen on american soil. Giving them a reason to get some oil

  • @Jijou3

I never did trust those seedy eskimos....

  • What an awesome adventure this might turn out to be. Here's hoping they find something mindblowing.

  • lets hope the intrusion dose not cause infections in both directions

  • "Burried"

  • aliens vs predators. we're all doomed!

  • If there is an Eco system with life at those depths and pressures, then I can see humans trying to probe Europa in the next 5o years.

  • @neals1979 EXACTLY!! The scientific illiterate folks commenting on this video are SAD! It was nice to see someone who sees what is going on & appreciates it. Your comment should be the one with 40 THUMBS UP!! But that just goes to show how dumb folks are!

  • Thumbs up for the Reporter speaking near the drill, talking about contamination... last thing we want is to contaminate the lake with the reporter's saliva...

  • @bads06 I saw the same thing! LOL!

  • @bads06 I'm sure they have some kind of autoclave they're going to put it in before they use it

  • So not just the Brits but the Russians and the Americans intend to do the same. Great.

  • "Next october"? is this a late upload or do they mean october 2012?

  • @seeriktus

    October 2012

  • +1 for science and discovery

  • Let's hope they don't find oil!

  • @hehe45451 WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY LOOKING FOR?? HAHA

  • Comment removed

  • @hehe45451 thing is, therre is oil down therre, antarctica used to be much more north, almost at the equator, and it used to be a tropical paradice. so therre is oil down therre, its just that it unaccesible. but it really makes me mad, the ice over therre is melting, its going to be much easyer to get the oil out :(

humans need to get smart about the enviroment..

  • @hehe45451 oil = war

  • @hehe45451 I think millions of years ago, there used to be life, dinosaurs, in Antarctica (this would've been before it drifted into the Antarctic Circle) so there's some possibility there'd be some oil there.

  • @cleanhomer youre a credit to your name

  • @hehe45451 i'm sure that's their goal

  • let me save you a year, theres fucking nothing down there that we need to know about, you shitheads are going to start the 2012 apocalypse by pissing off some evil dragon or something and it ending up destroying the world

  • 3 Kilometres Down. The hot water will be frozen before it gets to the Tip. And they wont be able to retrieve the equipment. Even the hot water coming out the Tip will refreeze as it comes back toward the surface. The weight of that length of hose and the friction will also make it impossible to work.

  • @jrhocking they are looking for the 200000 nazis that myseriously disappeared near the end of WWII. : )

  • Hmm, I wonder if anything really is living down there. It sounds possible and I bet they will find some new species, alive or dead.

  • I'm thinking Europa, Jupiter moon.

  • That diagram looked like the same one from Aliens vs. Predators.

  • @ProteinShaykh I had the same thought! :o)

  • @ProteinShaykh the team was never heard from again

  • @tradernorton05 True, but I gotta know what's down there... That's also a typically human characteristic.

  • @tradernorton05 Don't include all mankind like this. It's a small part of humanity that 'fuck up' everything they touch, the rest of us is just taken for a ride. Seen that way it's suddenly very possible to stop it.

  • @tradernorton05 You wouldn't have a computer or internet to get angsty on if engineers left well enough alone.

  • @tradernorton05 are you suggesting humans should not touch anything?

  • I'm thinking UFO's....

  • @OrganicKing I like finding out the answers to a fun mystery. But are we sometimes too curious for our own good?...Get ready to find some dinosaurs, lol!. Or maybe what you said, UFO's! Just pray they don't bring up any scary microorganisms. :o0

  • So the dude just breaths and spits on it while his talking about not contaminating it >.<

  • hope they don't find and release the next plague
