Neat, I guess. The worlds fastes pencel sharpener. It could eat an entire penel as fast as you can push it in. Also eats pens, chop stix and cigarettes
pulled an 840 watt motor out of an old Hoover 409 that's missing the wands and brushes. put it on the floor sideways, and it rolled away real fast before running out of wire! freaking awesome!
@Bigjohnnywad well it is a basic jet engine , all you need are a fan blade on the front , a cowling , and a combustion chamber to ignite the fuel , then strap it to a 12 volt car battery and lash it to a bike and you have a jet powered cycle . lol
I used a variac, variable autotransformer. Varying the voltage caused the speed to vary. One classmate gave me that motor, probably she disassembled it from her old vacuum cleaner (she bought new one recently :).
Ok cool. Is it possible to get a vac motor working with just battery power, wired in series to increase voltage? Obviously the motor wouldn't turn very fast due to the weak voltage, but I'm just wondering.
Yes, these motors work on both AC and DC. There is a certain threshold voltage due to the commutator. As you can see, it spins pretty well even at 25V.
WHAT?! We didn't get flames!
I'm disappointed.....where's my hammer?! :-D
Place the live wire on one brush, the neutral on the other brush, then turn up the variac.
Crank it up as hard as it goes until it pops. :-D I WANT FLAMES!!

@Bjumpje where? This blinking are Sparks. Thats normal.

they can do a few tens of kRPM. The one in that tiny handheld dyson can manage 104kRPM, ya... rly...
Dental drills can go way up beyond that to insane RPMs

I swear, I took out a motor from an old shop vac, and that thing is serious fast.

What uses could a old vacuum cleaner motor be used for? I have one in my house and am wondering.

would a 3 amp variable autotransformer work ? just for something like a motor in your video ? free running
pitbike2006 2 years ago
could you use the motor on a go kart?
DocterrNick 2 years ago
no. it delivers only few hundred watts and it needs pretty high voltage to give enough power.
Laakkonen1 2 years ago
@Laakkonen1 a few hundred? 8A @ 120v = 960 watts that is 1.3 HP that should be enough to get you going at least 20mph with the right gearing.
cutty02 11 months ago
@DocterrNick no, but imagine this on a bicycle
fairyheli2 3 months ago
How much did the variable autotransformer cost you, I've seen a couple on ebay for $45. this is what I,ve wanted to do!
Helicopterpilot16 2 years ago
0eur/0usd. 8A 230V.

were you using a speed controller on the motor?
or what?
and where did you get it?

Was the motor free-running, or was it spinning the vacuum fan? If free-running, it should surpass 20,000 rpm.
NathanH5 3 years ago
Fan was mounted. I'm gonna disassemble it and use the motor as ARSG's motor.
Laakkonen1 3 years ago
Nice vid. How high could you go before you start to exceed the motor's limitations?
Latias82 3 years ago
Not very much over 230V. It's iron area and windings' thickness are seriously underrated. It blows the air through the motor and gets still warm/hot.

What vacuum cleaner did the motor come from?

Probably Miele's, but I'm not sure because classmates gave that to me.
