  • how can people post angry post with the meters playing in background. Saw rhcp in preservation hall in the french quarter, new orleans. on the uplift mofo party tour about 1989. Meters and early peppers equally bad ass

  • The Chili Peppers worship the Meters. They jammed together at Voodoo a couple of years ago. The Meters created it. The Peppers appreciated it. The first RHCP record I ever heard was on a college station around 1980. It was a very funky , but hard-rocking cover of the Gary U.S. Bonds classic "New Orleans". They were into this music from the beginning.

  • Why is everyone arguing about RHCP on a meters video? Why does it matter what style they play? They're neither punk nor funk anyway, they're just a mixture of everything that influenced them, like most bands, except they obviously grew up listening to more diverse music than most bands do. SO CALM THE FUCK DOWN.

  • The 60 Minutes hat cracks me up :D

  • This is jazz and i like it and about the Chili Peppers, yes they are number 1 funk band but they dont play only funk or punk..they have all sort of style and technique of playing check their album songs and concerts (they are much more better live)

  • @wowprogamer1 Since when do the Peppers play funk?

And this aint jazz, this is funk.

  • @robbertzzzzz Use google i cant open a big conversation please

  • @wowprogamer1 I'm just saying that punk isn't funk. Funk is what James Brown and Tower of Power play, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers play punk.

  • @robbertzzzzz Okay but im listening to some good music here and thats all what matters to me :)

  • @wowprogamer1 [like] *click*

  • @robbertzzzzz haha you must only hear mainstream chilis. listen to their self titled album, freaky styley, mothers milk, blood sugar sex magik..those are all funk albums. you want some funk songs by them? listen to mellowship slinky in b major, american ghost dance, brothers cup, subway to venus, out in la...the list is endless

  • MOVE OVER ROVER&LET THE METERS TAKE OVER.

  • Caught these cool Cats at Jimmy's in NOLA back in '87', Freshman year at Loyola, and this real funky song ruled my freakin way to innocent white ass world! I'm a huge fan of the "Freaky Stiley" CD, but you gotsta give respect to the Funksta-Originators, God Bless the Funky Meters!

  • ive seen the peppers, and parliament, but i would trade em both to see a meters show...

  • Hollywood - Red hot Chili Peppers

    -.-

  • Haha! I love that the guitarist wears a "Moldejazz"-Tshirt! And this is just wonderful :D

  • You can talk all day about the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but truth be told, if it wasn't for musicians like these guys and JB's band, RHCP would have been just another good punk band. If you don't agree with that, you don't know what you're talkin' about.

  • @pretorious700 I'm an RHCP fan to the core, and I think even they would agree with your assessment. They wouldn't be who they are without their influences.

  • Pure music. Like runs thick like gasoline through your veins.

  • Funk is Life

  • Meters are probably the most underrated funk band EVER.

  • george clinton is an orchestrator, but he isn't that talented as far music making, Billy Bass Nelson and Eddie Hazel were where it was at.

  • @HendrixPrinceFlea89 and Bootsy

  • In wich album is this song?

  • @00RV00 rejuvenation

  • @pretorious700 Thanks

  • It's good... but it's just not the Meters without Modeliste. This drummer's too straight.

  • wow... so nice

  • This looks like the proginal dudes, Loe Nocentelli on guitar and George Porter on bass and of course the Neville brothers. Takes me down memory lane. These were my mentors.

  • Many COOL weather in Crescent City, and this is one of my favorite cool sky

  • ah c'mon, it wasnt that bad...

  • god you're stupid

  • ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY?

  • honestly, dose it get any better?

  • now i see where the red hot chilly peppers have taken the groove! this is the same of hollywood, song on the first album

  • Except that it's on their second album, but yeah

(isn't it? It's been a while since I've listened to the older RHCP records)

  • yeah it's definintely the second album

  • yeah, it's on the second record. Freaky Styley

  • yes, RHCP wanted to make a cover of this song, but George Clinton said it would be better if Anthony writes a new one on a same groove :)

  • nice shuffle, this is the real funky feel, makes me wanna join an play some funky solos

  • i wish i could play drums like that too tho

  • Not really difficult once you pick the piece apart. = : )K

  • screwed up? yes.

  • well it may be subjective, but the funny thing is that there is something that seperates the two bands: the meters are INTERESTING musically. the chili peppers are cool where they go rock the meters go JAZZ. and yes, jazz musicians are much better than rock musicians on average. and because of that, they can write much better chord progressions, have more interesting rhythms, and have more freedom to improvise. to each his own though

  • I love russell batiste on drums, but its not the same without ziggy the LEGEND playing that kit.

  • hollywood holeeey woood!

  • The vocals are probably the biggest let-down to me. Not that they're bad, but they're a bit timid. Might be a bad mix, but when the singing starts it doesn't seem like much. Livens up tho, and the last chorus is great.

  • the meters get down, rhcp gets down, parliament gets down

theyr all pioneers and very original

but the meters are the most original and i believe the best musicians

    ahead of their time

  • Definitely the most original and ahead of their time but I wouldnt be so sure if theyre the best musicians.

    Three amazing bands though

  • I agree with that: no Zigaboo no Meters!

  • i like russell batiste

    hes good too

  • Everyone arguing the toss over who is better out of RHCP/Meters/Clinton is wrong. They're all talented and write good music, that's what counts. Not what YOU prefer. It's subjective.

  • lol its not even competition, anyone with sense knows that Funkadelic and Meters are ten times better than RHCP, to the point that RHCP asked Clinton to produce one of their albums, i've listened to RHCP, and there isnt anything special forreal, if you know real funk

  • That's opinion, not fact. To you there's nothing special about RHCP; many others might actually take them over The Meters. Just because people disagree you doesn't mean they lack sense. Taste is subjective.

  • The Meters and RHCP have a similar sound, but the keyboards in the meters here are kick@ss

  • gotta agree with jagfan.all this is subjective, rolling stone cant even get any lists right because its all strictly subjective to taste

  • Wouldn't classify there music as the being of the same style. I would say they are closer to Funkadelic with Eddie Hazel with John in th group than to the meters. Also, Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magic stand on their own as original and innovative.

  • your just an idiot

  • @MUN7001 Besides the fact that RHCP makes great music! If you are touring the world you are not wannabes. From a funk stand point of course the Meters take the gold metal, but both bands deserve equal praise in my mind. Fans have accepted every RHCP album since their debut, and they have evolved with every album as well. Dont rag on them just to pretend you know real music. The Meters are legendary, but if you had any kind of ear at all you would have a huge respect for RHCP.

  • @a1Drummer07 "Fans have accepted every RHCP album since their debut"... wtf kind of idiotic statement is that?-Celine Dion "fans" have accepted all of her shitty albums too. RHCP are a first rate rock band, but about a third rate funk band. Deal with it.

  • @pretorious700 Well I didn't "rate" them quite like you, but I did say the Meters took the gold from "a funk standpoint". So if that was your rebelious way of agreeing with me then that works with me.

  • @jagfan84 I fully agree; beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally though, The Meters are far and above all else. One of the greatest bands ever, especially with Zigaboo behind the kit doing what only he does. (this isnt Zigaboo, its Batiste, who is also great, just not the original feel of Ziggy)

  • Clinton is more city funk, while the Meters are more down home Louisiana funk. I'll take the Meters over clinton and bootsy anytime! rhcp should NOT be in the same sentence as the Meters. The Meters bring something special to every show.

  • This is killer, but not quite the Meters. No Zigaboo, no Meters. Russell Batiste is great, but he doesn't have the subtle power and grace of Zigaboo.

  • This drummer PUMPS...I'm white and this makes me want to go to AFRICA.....(I LIE)....George Porter played with Gov't Mule on Deep end, damn good song they did.

  • these guys is what funk is all about, they are one of the best, if not the best FUNK BAND EVER!!!! you can feel a very laid out, funky feel about them that feel makes their music mega awesome where as the rhcp`s have a more faster rock-ier sound to their funk. THE METERS FTFW!!!!!

  • please don't mention 'rhcp' before the name of this great band

  • why not? its because of them that half these people know this song...

  • because even though they've done that, they fricken suck balls , lol, you made me say it

  • not as many balls as you`ve sucked.....

  • RHCP are quite blatantly better

Their cover version was so much better

  • well i guess some people have different opinions about them. But to me, The meters require patience to recognize the musical beauty, much like a painting, RHCP is for people with ADD, alzheimers, etc.

  • They work pretty well togheter..... The Meters and RHCP...

    did you know that MUN7001?

Nevertheless: To me 'The Meters' are a top slot!!!

  • Chili Peppers are punk ass wannabes?

    Fuck off are they

The Chilis are original and any punk roots they had they left behind in the 80s...

  • @fleamus Not really, they stil brought a punk feel to some of their funk stuff, which is what made it so good.

  • Riff u have to listen to more music man Im a big Fan of Rhcp and the meters but Best "FUNK" band ever? P-Funk, Bootsy Collins even Maceo Parker . Meters are more Jazz FUNK but George Clinton is FUNK

  • ok, thanx ill check them out

  • I love these guys, will the original Meters ever play together again?

  • This is classic New Orleans Funk!

  • RHCP Hollywood (Africa) is the same song but AK put the lyrics into his own... they still had to pay the Meters anyway.

  • lol

  • Man RHCP stole so many ideas not only from the meters but from funkadelik etc, still awesome though

  • I think alot of music artists have done that, lol, but I oblige you to figure out Fishbone, Mother's Finest, and Living Colour, they also contribute to the funk rock sound

  • The best funk song in the world! :D

  • Homesick.

  • Very awesome song, but Dirty Dozen Brass Band did it better.

  • love it

  • hahah oh my god I cant believe ive never heard this song before. Go listen to holleywood by the chili peppers

  • the chili peppers version is a cover tophue :)

  • Yeah I know, I just never knew that listening to Hollywood before

  • yeah :) my dad was surprised too... except he didn't know the meters came first.. so he was like "those guys copied the chili pepper's song!!" hahaha

  • chill relaxed, enjoy this music

  • take-a-me on back to hollywood south, chocolate city,

to the brotherland and a woman is a woman, and a mayor is a man. ... if ever i cease to love...

  • LOTS of good drummers out of New Orleans...what about Willy Green who used to play with the Nevilles? They ALL can play in New Orleans! I used to live there...I've heard them! :) Man, I miss it.

  • The Meters! The godfathers from New Orleans Style funk! Yo!

  • i got this from watchig a few black prison movies man check this out ; give me chance my brother, give me a chance to make a friend, stop all the killing, stop all the fighting, lead us to the promise land, give me a chance my brother jesus is comming soon my brother.....

  • Thanks for posting this dude. I'm a 67yr old wide [white] boy drummer and this is the shit!

These guys are so funky it hurts. We get to play that feel on the gigs but nobody does it like that. Makes me feel gooooood!

  • everyone should know how great of a musician russell batiste is and stop trying to compare him to zig. he grew up watching zig his whole life and he knows his shit. any real meters fan can hear traces of zigaboo in russell. when you grow up around that shit its embeded in you, russell is just "modernizing" it.

  • That's a damn good point..and it's important to remember that this is four guys doin the real deal...not some orchestra

  • russel batiste is a great man with more talent that anyone leaving a comment on here so yall cant be dissin

  • I'm better actually.

  • Awesome funky meters, incredible guitar bass drums and organ! oh yeah!

  • i think i was at this. meters opened for santana at the municipal auditorium. yikes, what an evening!

  • Hollywood in ref. to the Chili Peppers who are a kickass funk outfit in their own right, much respect to both

  • lol.

  • Ziggy's just killin' it. How smooth can one sound?

  • I dont think that ziggy, I think it's russell batiste jr who played with them from late 80's - 90's - a pretty incredible drummer nevertheless. I still like Ziggy better though, he has a loosey goosey vibe when playing live that just blows me away.

  • Thanks rbjax. I looked at the video after i posted the comment and thought to myself, this guy looks a little young to be zig. I figured someone would catch it sooner or later. Thanks for straightening me out!

  • no sweat man, if you ever want to hear some insane drumming get the meters "live on the queen mary". just absurd.

  • what are talking about hollywood Africa you are obtuse

man.this is one of the best funk outfits ever respect please!!

  • dude, chill he's making a reference to the RHCP cover of "Africa" re-named "Hollywood".

  • Interesting to see the "Africa" of "Hollywood(Africa)"
