I think that depends on the sifu's decision on how they want the curriculum of the school. Some may teach short weapons first, then long weapons, and others may teach staff first before spear.

@jacf210792 I believe you get to start the basic movements on the red belt and without the metal tip.
I think you just get to learn the whole thing on the black belt.
I could be wrong though

in my school u have to be black belt to learn it.
