It would be great if Dennis got back with them, but I think Dennis is happier doing his own thing now. Styx just isn't Styx without him, but that's life I guess.
Styx Live and In Concert 1976 - 1978 2DVD set filmed at the Winterland in SF available at Tommygun Video please see our youtube channel for link to web site/video clips.
I can see why Dennis DeYoung is out of the band.....notice that he politely chastised JY for saying "Shit" on stage......"There's a time and place for everything"......"Now I know why tigers eat their YOUNG" and then he goes on in the beginning of this song to tell someone to "Go To Hell"
I saw Styx in July with YES and Styx was in excellent form to say the least without Dennis DeYoung.....yeah....I'd like to Jon Anderson back in YES too, but for now,...that is the way it is.
@OPIECT That is not JY saying "sh--" that's Dennis. If you're going to criticize DDY you could try to get your facts straight. LOL I've seen a number of new Styx vids and can't stand Gowan's voice. I passed on them in my hometown. Instead I traveled to see Dennis a month ago and he was great! IMO his voice is incredible. But to each his own!
Always wondered why Tommy played all the solos on Dennis' songs when he was an obviously inferior guitarist to J.Y.Inferior?O.k lets just be blunt. He is an awful guitar player compared to any soloist let alone J.Y.
What debate? Styx was great with Dennis. Styx is great without Dennis. Dennis is great without Styx. Dennis will never rejoin Styx. It's simple. Please do go and see them in concert. You will love it. I miss Dennis also, but they are still great.
I think I've seen you on the Melodic Rock Styx board... anyways, yes, the original video had been posted here by the recording label; was there for a couple of years IIRC and then the label pulled it. :-(
In fact they pulled alot of stuff, including the Roboto vid which left me up a creek because i was using it in a class assignment. Fortunately, I did a screen grab of it I think (that was a couple of laptops ago... maybe I uploaded it; I'll look).
if 1976 to 1982 had an american version of the beatles it would be STYX because they r the BEST BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!. no one can touch their harmonies not even some of the best bands of their day Boston, Journey, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, Queen, Foreigner, Judas Priest, or Aerosmith and these are all good bands
@hokiepower Especially not live, and keep in mind that this songs was at the end of their set when most voices are worn out. I would contest that CSN are the all time greatest vocal group, though, but then again, it's different genre. More credit to Styx for vocal performances like that all while playing instruments.
You are absolutely right EWSC37 I won't go see them with just Tommy and J.Y. I also wouldn't go see them without those two. You have to have all three of the original vocalists and Dennis pretty much founded the group, for God's sake. Come on guys, get the right lineup back together
Being an amateur (very) singer myself I don't understand how a guy like Tommy can scream things to the crowd and then sing like that night after night? What is his throat made of steel?
Styx had their 4th triple platinum album in a row during this time and had won the gallup poll as the biggest band in America. They could do no wrong -
I love this song and this vid is a great reminder of how good the real Styx was at their peak.
Dennis DeYoung cant dance, The 80's wardrobe was alful, but Dennis DeYoung wrote some of the greatest rock songs ever and we learned from the 80s not to dress like that anymore lol
@EWSC37 I agree....But remember that he claims to have a 'Light Sensitivity disorder' and can't handle being under hot lights for an extended pd. of time, hence why he says he was fired from Styx in '98, and only does a limited number of solo shows a year, with a very sparse lighting setup. Not to mention, he will probably be on the outs with Tommy and JY forever.
@Rockstaralan Dennis suffered from a virus that made him sensitive to light, but he is fine now. His stage show lights are all done by his son. The truth is, he was fired once before 1999 and the only reason he came back was because they couldn't find a replacement. Shaw and Young found a replacement in 1999, so there was no need for DeYoung anymore. Truth be told, they never got along and there was always a power struggle between Shaw, DeYoung, and Young, which is why they made such great music
@MercurysWoman the power struggle was between DDY and Shaw. I got the styx biography. JY was always neutral. Really its fucked up how shaw did DDY, how do you fire one of the founders? DDY stopped touring because of his sensitivity to the lights and Shaw used that opportunity to fire DDY. He was never fired before that, Shaw left and joined Damn Yankees then came back, he and JY had issues with kilroy album. No the groups big issue was Suzanne DDY's wife. I have an issue with Chuck not helping.
@MrSilksoul While I agree with you, some of your information is false. Dennis was fired in 1979, but while the group was unable to find a replacement, he was hired back. Before Tommy, JY had no issues with Dennis, but after he joined, JY was on his side for creative arguments. When they had an excuse to fire Dennis for good in '99, they took the opportunity and found their replacement.
@MercurysWoman Hell Chuck has aids and can't tour, the didnt fire him. They should just patch things up and reunite, cause Styx is a joke right now and they're performing in places thats an embarrassment to the legacy of the group.
I disagree. I just saw them at Red Rocks here in Colorado - a world class arena - and they were absolutely fantastic - they rocked much better than they ever did with Dennis. Dennis is great, but he is no longer a good fit with Styx - it happens - people change and move on
@ktcolo1 thats your preference, myself and many others disagree. Dennis had a balance between rocking out and being theatrical. Personal preferences, i bet Dennis could fit if he came back, its just not his direction anymore, nevertheless, majority of Styx fans that I know, have read comments from etc.. would love to see the original group reunite.
@MrSilksoul That's not just my personal preference. Myself and many others (majority of fans I know) agree that Styx is way better live now than they were with Dennis. And my main point was that they do not play in places that are an embarrassment to the legacy of the band. Red Rocks is one of the best places in the world to see a concert. 13 years in a row on tour - no way Dennis could do that if he were still in the band. The past was great, but Styx carries on...
@ktcolo1 and like I said many others will disagree so really its a moot point to continue the debate. I'm pretty sure Dennis could considering he still does tour.
@ktcolo1 Funny how you make it sound like most people prefer Styx without Dennis. But 1. they haven't had any big hits without Dennis, and 2. the current comment with the most votes states viewers' wishes for Dennis to rejoin! His voice is incredible and a large part of Styx's magical sound. If Styx is just playing old songs anyway and not writing new ones, they might as well have kept Dennis since there wouldn't be creative differences to fight about. I saw Dennis a month ago; he's still great!
I saw this tour in November of 1981 in Frankfurt. It was incredible. 15 years later I saw the PT anniversary show in Colorado. I hope that before I die, they'll re-unite and do a PT tour on more time.
What an incredible band from an incredible city... Chicago baby. God this was when music was more than just album sales... These guys wrote absolute genius...
He choked for a second, but he rules. He sings ALL the high stuff here and on the others. Haven't seen them in recent years, but I'm sure his voice is still awesome!
im so pissed that they kicked DDY out of the band.I meen he was the heart and soul of the band listen to that voice. if u ask me I think tommy shaw is an ass
I'm more pissed that they don't write great songs like this anymore. Even without DDY, they could at least put some great songs that rock out there again. Tommy was usually good for 3 or 4 an album and maybe 1 for JY.
There were issues on both sides. First of all, DDY and the band sort of excluded Tommy from their first reunion tour. Also, DDY was supposedly becoming too controlling in the band. I agree, however, that they should just get over it. The band is just too good to be broken up
There's a THIRD SIDE called THE TRUTH. Tommy couldn't do Edge of the Century album nor tour as he was with Ted Nugent in that supergroup Damn Yankees whom were all bark and no bite IMHO. Dennis DeYoung wasn't like Roger Waters, polar opposite. Waters wasn't open to opinions nor contributions post WYWH whereas DeYoung encouraged songs from JY and Tommy and they collaborated and fed off each other. Art rock was dying so Styx had to change. If they didn't they would've been forgotten ala ELP.

TS was excluded. The drummer John Panozzo left the band b/c he did not think this was right. Also, there were definitely creative tensions within the band. DDY still wanted to lead the band in the direction of KWH. However, the rest of the band resented the fact that they were forced to dress up in costumes and deliver scripted lines at ROCK concerts. I'm not trying to entirely justify what TS and JY did, but DDY did have some part in it.
For the record, Dennis DeYoung didn't want to move Styx forward without Tommy Shaw when TS like a crybaby quit in 1983 whilst the others members wanted Styx to go on. DDY knew not to ruin a good thing so the band went on hiatus after the release of 1984's Caught in the Act live album and film. DDY and TS each did three solo albums (JY did two). This was done until TS was ready to come back but instead he went to the shitty Damn Yankees. Styx IMHO died in 1999 and are now a sham!

The entire band was irritated with DDY, not just TS. He wanted to do another KWH-like album, and the rest of the band did not want that. Both sides contributed to the breakup.
Don Henley said it "THERE'S THREE SIDES TO EACH STORY YOURS MINE AND THE COLD HARD TRUTH". The truth was the band was exhausted from album/tour, album/tour syndrome plus TS' drug abuse was bad. The other three wanted Styx to go on after TS quit like a woman halfway through the KWH tour. DDY knew that he and TS were the Lennon/McCartney of the band and refused to go on without him. DDY in 2006 said take "High Time" off KWH and add "Renegade" then KWH would have been superb.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If Shaw is entirely at fault, why did the band kick DDY out. Why did they sue him for calling himself "The Voice of Styx?" Why did John Panozzo, the drummer, leave when Tommy was not part of the reunion tour? There were clearly issues on both sides. And where did you get about substance abuse. After listening many times to Snowblind, I find that a bit hard to believe.
Tommy Shaw on the Styx Behind the Music stated he was drinking and abused cocaine in the 1980s. John Panozzo didn't quit Styx, he died because of alcohol abuse in 1996. Tommy Shaw went to that shitty hair metal band Damn Yankees (which was the equivalent of seeing Spider Man, The Incredible Hulk, Superman and Batman get together to play cards and not fight). John Panozzo was too ill to do the 1996 tour because of years of "living the rock star life" which eventually did him in when he died.
Seriously. Ask yourself this question: would I like to stand up at a rock concert and act out a really lame play? Would I like to dress up in absurd costumes and write songs for a very stupid concept album? If the answer is no, then you can see why the band split up. If it is yes, you have some serious control issues.
No. Rock and theater have always gone hand in hand. Hendrix humping and burning guitar. The Who with instrument destruction. Genesis with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (they toured with that album and played the whole story and Peter Gabriel acted out the story). Lest not forget Pink Floyd's The Wall where the band presented the album live 30 times with Roger Waters acting out as Pink. There was no Final Cut tour as Waters and David Gilmour got into fistfights during that album's sessions.
Hey shithead, I own IT on both VHS and DVD and ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. The album cover of KWH petrified me as a 7 year old child in 1983 (I thought the robotos were scary and drove me away from the album and then again I was also scared of Ozzy dressed as wolfman on Bark at the Moon sleeve) but after viewing CitA (I already had its offshoot live disc), I bought KWH on CD and it's one of my Top 6 Styx Studio efforts. Cyclorama and Big Bong Theory sucked and The Wooden Nickel Years were scattershot.
Watch Tommy's expression in the dialogue before the first live song (I don't remember what it is). The face says it all. I do agree with you however. Their new stuff sucks. For the record, I do not think KWH was a bad album, but it was not a group production. That is what drove the band apart.
Years of album/tour, album/tour, syndrome for 13 years and partying and drug abuse (from mainly Tommy Shaw, James Young and John Panozzo who partied whilst Chuck Panozzo did his thing and Dennis DeYoung was a devout family man with his wife and kids on tour with him so the rock star life was not an option for him). Tommy was acting wild and crazy being the wild rocker at the time. Styx changed like Genesis and Pink Floyd before them changed. If Styx still did prog they'd be forgotten like ELP.
Many bands claim a member quits when in fact they FIRED the member. Noted examples were Styx firing Dennis DeYoung TWICE (first in '80 for two months and then for good in '99. That baby Tommy Shaw was jealous that the public and A&M liked Dennis' songs more I suppose). Van Halen fired David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony. Roger Waters fired the late Rick Wright from Pink Floyd during The Wall sessions. Steve Smith and Ross Valory got fired from Journey in 1985 because of Steve Perry.
DeYoung was actually fired for being a pushy prick. While Young and the rest wanted to stay with more rockish songs, DeYoung wanted to continue with the theatrical songs. You forget that at the same time DeYoung went solo, Shaw did the same thing and formed up with the likes of Ted Nudget.
ORegan, here's pt 1 of my response. Tommy Shaw was a country/folk/Southern rocker and later hair metal guy (Damn Yankees with NUGENT and Jack Blades was the moral equal of seeing Spider Man, Batman and Superman get together to play cards and not fight crime). Dennis DeYoung's style changed to ballads and more poppish rock as prog rock was dying a slow death (Genesis changed as well). Also, record labels are the ones who pick singles for album. A&M screamed "Babe" and later "Roboto" as singles.
Part 2. TS in the 1980s had a bad alcohol and drug addiction as did JY and John Panozzo (Chuck Panozzo no clue what he did). DDY on the other hand avoided that crap and always had his wife and kids on tour. In fact, TS quit Styx during KWH tour. JY and Panozzos' first choice was for DDY to go on with Styx with new guy. DDY said NO as he knew Styx was the five guys! Due to TS doing a solo LP, DDY then JY each did solo albums as well whilst Chuck went to school and John became a Keith Moon clone.
Yeah, Tommy did quit during the KHW tour, because DeYoung was being a complete ass to everyone. During that tour, Dennis cast himself in the lead role for his own rock opera which nobody else wanted to do, would go off on ten minute soliloquies in the middle of shows and bullied everyone into his way.
Fetacheese, I set the record STRAIGHT. Tommy was in fact on was a full drug addict during the band's heyday. In fact, the story of Styx getting booed in Texas was a lie. Dennis DeYoung revealed in 2007 that he wanted the band to play a standard set of hits and new Kilroy tracks but the other guys wanted to try Kilroy at the LAST MINUTE. Dennis knew that Kilroy was what not should follow acts like Nugent, Blue Oyster Cult. People were tired and drunk and left but no boos were rung out.
I can tell by looking at one of their DVD's that they were all on drugs except Dennis. However I also beleive there is some truth on fetacheese900's story.
I wouldn't take drugs. I'm Autistic and if I mixed cocaine and such with Aspergers, I'd probably get disastrous results. I guess you didn't hear about Keith Moon. He abused them and look what happened (Roger Daltrey once KO'd Keith after Daltrey took Moon's cocaine and flushed it down the toilet) and later died (among other musicians). Dennis DeYoung was a master showman, even without drugs (Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull was as well as he avoided them for fear they would affect his playing).
Pt 3. All in Styx (including DDY) wanted TS back for 1990 reunion but TS instead CHOSE to work with Damn Yankees who sucked. Styx got Glen Burtnik and did a great album out of Edge of the Century. Shame A&M's new parent company PolyGram thought otherwise and stopped pushing the band as EOTC was hitting Gold. To me and other Styx will always be DDY/Panozzos/JY/Tommy (though Equinox and EotC were both great). The new lineup IS NOT STYX! DDY's new solo disc sounds like OLD STYX surprisingly.
Three comments, and none really refutes what I said. I never even implied that Shaw was right and DeYoung was wrong. Just because DeYoung was a family man doesn't change the fact that he did push a little too far, and the rest didn't like it. Does that make him the bad guy? No, it just means he has ambition.
Oh, and bye the way, you older dudes are lucky, love Styx, but I was about 20 years too late to actually go to any of their concerts...going now would seem like sham with 3/5ths gone.
DDY at least wasn't Roger Waters in restricting band members from writing and arranging songs after success (he regrets doing KWH as a Styx album but A&M wanted another album IMMEDIATELY after PT). RWaters, on the other hand, thought he was Pink Floyd and after Wish You Were Here restricted Rick Wright and David Gilmour's music output. Then reduced DG and Nick Mason to sidemen status after Waters FIRED Wright after Rick refused to start overdubs early during the mixing of The Wall.
Dennis shaved the moustache off once and for all in Japan in January of 1982. He has been clean shaven since 1982. This trumps the studio version by a longshot!
Wow! Those really were the good ol' times! I was too young to make it to the Paradise tour, but my first concert (ever!) was Kilroy in '84. Thanks for adding this... and all of the others you have posted. You're the best!
It would be great if Dennis got back with them, but I think Dennis is happier doing his own thing now. Styx just isn't Styx without him, but that's life I guess.

I saw this tour in November of 1981 in Frankfurt. It was incredible. 15 years later I saw the PT anniversary show in Colorado. I hope that before I die, they'll re-unite and do a PT tour on more time.

im so pissed that they kicked DDY out of the band.I meen he was the heart and soul of the band listen to that voice. if u ask me I think tommy shaw is an ass
shadowedhour 3 years ago 2
I'm more pissed that they don't write great songs like this anymore. Even without DDY, they could at least put some great songs that rock out there again. Tommy was usually good for 3 or 4 an album and maybe 1 for JY.
impreziveboi 3 years ago
There were issues on both sides. First of all, DDY and the band sort of excluded Tommy from their first reunion tour. Also, DDY was supposedly becoming too controlling in the band. I agree, however, that they should just get over it. The band is just too good to be broken up
classicrockforever5 3 years ago

I'm not trying to entirely justify what TS and JY did, but DDY did have some part in it.
classicrockforever5 3 years ago

Both sides contributed to the breakup.
classicrockforever5 3 years ago
Don Henley said it "THERE'S THREE SIDES TO EACH STORY YOURS MINE AND THE COLD HARD TRUTH". The truth was the band was exhausted from album/tour, album/tour syndrome plus TS' drug abuse was bad. The other three wanted Styx to go on after TS quit like a woman halfway through the KWH tour. DDY knew that he and TS were the Lennon/McCartney of the band and refused to go on without him. DDY in 2006 said take "High Time" off KWH and add "Renegade" then KWH would have been superb.

After listening many times to Snowblind, I find that a bit hard to believe.
classicrockforever5 3 years ago
Tommy Shaw on the Styx Behind the Music stated he was drinking and abused cocaine in the 1980s. John Panozzo didn't quit Styx, he died because of alcohol abuse in 1996. Tommy Shaw went to that shitty hair metal band Damn Yankees (which was the equivalent of seeing Spider Man, The Incredible Hulk, Superman and Batman get together to play cards and not fight). John Panozzo was too ill to do the 1996 tour because of years of "living the rock star life" which eventually did him in when he died.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago
Seriously. Ask yourself this question: would I like to stand up at a rock concert and act out a really lame play? Would I like to dress up in absurd costumes and write songs for a very stupid concept album? If the answer is no, then you can see why the band split up. If it is yes, you have some serious control issues.
classicrockforever5 3 years ago
There was no Final Cut tour as Waters and David Gilmour got into fistfights during that album's sessions.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago
Yes. Rock and roll can be very theatrical. It is not dramatic. Go buy yourself Caught in the Act and watch it. You will see my point.
classicrockforever5 3 years ago
Hey shithead, I own IT on both VHS and DVD and ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. The album cover of KWH petrified me as a 7 year old child in 1983 (I thought the robotos were scary and drove me away from the album and then again I was also scared of Ozzy dressed as wolfman on Bark at the Moon sleeve) but after viewing CitA (I already had its offshoot live disc), I bought KWH on CD and it's one of my Top 6 Styx Studio efforts. Cyclorama and Big Bong Theory sucked and The Wooden Nickel Years were scattershot.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago
Watch Tommy's expression in the dialogue before the first live song (I don't remember what it is). The face says it all. I do agree with you however. Their new stuff sucks. For the record, I do not think KWH was a bad album, but it was not a group production. That is what drove the band apart.
classicrockforever5 3 years ago
Years of album/tour, album/tour, syndrome for 13 years and partying and drug abuse (from mainly Tommy Shaw, James Young and John Panozzo who partied whilst Chuck Panozzo did his thing and Dennis DeYoung was a devout family man with his wife and kids on tour with him so the rock star life was not an option for him). Tommy was acting wild and crazy being the wild rocker at the time. Styx changed like Genesis and Pink Floyd before them changed. If Styx still did prog they'd be forgotten like ELP.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago
they didn't kick him out...he left...you don't know what you're talking about

Many bands claim a member quits when in fact they FIRED the member. Noted examples were Styx firing Dennis DeYoung TWICE (first in '80 for two months and then for good in '99. That baby Tommy Shaw was jealous that the public and A&M liked Dennis' songs more I suppose). Van Halen fired David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony. Roger Waters fired the late Rick Wright from Pink Floyd during The Wall sessions. Steve Smith and Ross Valory got fired from Journey in 1985 because of Steve Perry.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago
DeYoung was actually fired for being a pushy prick. While Young and the rest wanted to stay with more rockish songs, DeYoung wanted to continue with the theatrical songs. You forget that at the same time DeYoung went solo, Shaw did the same thing and formed up with the likes of Ted Nudget.
ORegan77 3 years ago
ORegan, here's pt 1 of my response. Tommy Shaw was a country/folk/Southern rocker and later hair metal guy (Damn Yankees with NUGENT and Jack Blades was the moral equal of seeing Spider Man, Batman and Superman get together to play cards and not fight crime). Dennis DeYoung's style changed to ballads and more poppish rock as prog rock was dying a slow death (Genesis changed as well). Also, record labels are the ones who pick singles for album. A&M screamed "Babe" and later "Roboto" as singles.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago
Due to TS doing a solo LP, DDY then JY each did solo albums as well whilst Chuck went to school and John became a Keith Moon clone.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago
Yeah, Tommy did quit during the KHW tour, because DeYoung was being a complete ass to everyone. During that tour, Dennis cast himself in the lead role for his own rock opera which nobody else wanted to do, would go off on ten minute soliloquies in the middle of shows and bullied everyone into his way.
fetacheese900 3 years ago
Fetacheese, I set the record STRAIGHT. Tommy was in fact on was a full drug addict during the band's heyday. In fact, the story of Styx getting booed in Texas was a lie. Dennis DeYoung revealed in 2007 that he wanted the band to play a standard set of hits and new Kilroy tracks but the other guys wanted to try Kilroy at the LAST MINUTE. Dennis knew that Kilroy was what not should follow acts like Nugent, Blue Oyster Cult. People were tired and drunk and left but no boos were rung out.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago
I can tell by looking at one of their DVD's that they were all on drugs except Dennis. However I also beleive there is some truth on fetacheese900's story.

I would take drugs also if I was in a band with dennis!!
popfrend 2 years ago

DDY's new solo disc sounds like OLD STYX surprisingly.
floydgenesisnut 3 years ago 2
Three comments, and none really refutes what I said. I never even implied that Shaw was right and DeYoung was wrong. Just because DeYoung was a family man doesn't change the fact that he did push a little too far, and the rest didn't like it. Does that make him the bad guy? No, it just means he has ambition.
Oh, and bye the way, you older dudes are lucky, love Styx, but I was about 20 years too late to actually go to any of their concerts...going now would seem like sham with 3/5ths gone.
ORegan77 3 years ago
DDY at least wasn't Roger Waters in restricting band members from writing and arranging songs after success (he regrets doing KWH as a Styx album but A&M wanted another album IMMEDIATELY after PT). RWaters, on the other hand, thought he was Pink Floyd and after Wish You Were Here restricted Rick Wright and David Gilmour's music output. Then reduced DG and Nick Mason to sidemen status after Waters FIRED Wright after Rick refused to start overdubs early during the mixing of The Wall.

I could be wrong, but I don't think he choked. It's just a different variation on the lead. He often plays different leads live.

Dennis shaved the moustache off once and for all in Japan in January of 1982. He has been clean shaven since 1982. This trumps the studio version by a longshot!
