There is nothing wrong with having a dream or goal but when you let it become who you are your position is shaky. This was the case of Dan Millman. The gold medal defined him. The more meaning we try to create in life the more meaningless life becomes.

@smashingpoop...those who look outside dream, those who look within awaken. The American way is to keep searching and seeking outside of themselves. Even the Americanized Christian God is a goal to be "grasped". Why do you chase after things? Is it maybe because culture has imbedded into you that you need a dream or goal for meaning and purpose? Culture is very superfiscial. What is the in thing today won't be tomorrow.

this movie was a major let down.. this is actually really demotivating... it's actually saying (if i get it) don't dream to big because there's a chance you wont make it.. wow thats a real motivator

@smashingpoop The movie is saying that it's the journey that brings happiness not the outcome. So yes have goals and dream big, but do not be attached to the desired outcome or aversion of ones you don't want. Focus on the now, not on the "what if" while accomplishing your goals. Socrates said being a warrior is not about perfection or invulnerability. It's about absolute vulnerability.

The book is good but the movie is a nice synthesized version of it. Plus the guy who plays Dan Millman is hot. Sorry new age crowd, it's true. :)

@miauua It's available on DVD -- A great movie, but the book is better. Dan's other books are also great -- I read them periodically to maintain awareness of these truths.

I would recommend all to read book by P.D. Ouspensky In Search of Miraculous and books of G.I. Gurdijeff Meetings with Remarkable Men, Life is real only when I'am, etc... in these books there are deeper explanations about work on self, Soc was probably great teacher but he didn't say everything he knew , this movie and book is only scratch on surface and i started by watching it, but reality is much more complicated , and Dan ended up in New Age and went of track with real work
