I saw you way back in San Francisco at Winterland for your 'Modern Music' Tour with Rush and Ted N. You were brilliant then................you are even better now!
this is quality musical ability and skill ,, this type of adept fretwork skill and composition is soo very rare ,im in seventh heaven listening to this
why oph why oh why is this guy not talked about..one of the best british guitarists we have had writing great music down the years NEVER talked about at all..one of the great british music mysteries...the guy is ignored and forgotten..a icon and a legend...rock on Bill
Kudos to the producers of this video. I have SO many other musical legends recorded by old cellphones (or even old videocams snuck into shows) held or propped up against a beer bottle! A handful of axemen turned me on to "serious" rock in the 70s: Steve Howe, John McLaughlin, Jan Akkerman - and BN! You guys are dead right: he deserves a LOT more credit than he's gotten!
imagine a double act Bill Nelson and KC.......as good as Adrian Belue but almost unknown even to this day, i dread to think how many albums hes put out over the years
been a fan since 79, great to see hes still playing:) m50
@Michaelclare1000 It is a Patrick Eggle Berlin Deluxe, similar to PRS. Own both Eggles and PRS and the Berlin is a smaller body than the PRS Custom that the Berlin resembles. PRS build quality puts Gibson and Fender to shame, particularly the former.
Fantastic playing from Mr Nelson. So many tones in one song, yet he has his own sound.? It's in the fingers.... A major British Talent. . I've been a fan of bill's since the 70's, and have seen him play live a few times. If you love the guitar you MUST check out 'Modern Music' by BEBOP DELUXE from 1976 for some Stunning guitar playing. Bill is also an excellent singer.
I love the bagpipes sample at the end of this piece for Stuart Adamson of Big Country. Massive respect to you,Bill.
Bill Nelson is another great and greatly-under-rated guitarist.....it's a little sad to see that he has switched out his Gibson ES-345 for a PRS. It seems like all the great guitarists switch from their signature instruments to PRS late in their careers. I blame arthritis.
I personally think PRS are great guitars, as good or maybe better than Gibson and Fender. They are modern guitars, the LP's and Strats are from the beginning of the 50's. Evolution my friend is the name of the game!
@jgrimsley2000 Bill still plays his ES345, uses it for quite a few of the Be Bop numbers and in recent times when I have seen him live, always for "Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape" and "Sister Seagull". Uses a Duesenberg for "Maid in Heaven". The man is simply the best there is.
sorely underrated guitarist, listen to 3 tracks off Axe Victim, Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape, Jets at dawn, No trains to Heaven (in a row off album) Brilliant!
I love this man's guitar-playing, always have. Beautiful sense of melody + he digs in nicely. In an alternate universe, it'sBill Nelson's music playing daily at the Mall of dream department stores, and no one ever worships any American Idols.
@quanalocha Fripp and Bill Nelson appear on "Gone to Earth" the third full-length solo album by David Sylvian, released in 1986. It's a double CD and quite good IMHO.
It just hit me. He and Mr. Fripp need to get together. And Mr. Eno. All three. One thing about Bill Nelson, his ability to compose melodies. He and Be-Bop Deluxe were such a breath of fresh air when I first heard them. I was working at Odyssey Record Headquarters and in the staging building, where all the records were set to ship to all the stores, Drastic Plastic and Waiting for Columbus vied warlike for airtime. Oddysey opened a new store every three weeks or so, then died.
Bill might be a fan of the TV show Breaking Bad, as he has Walt's look down to a T. IMHO. Oh Yea, this video brought tear to my eyes. Bill, Thanks for keeping with it! Your playing just gets better every year.
A lot of fans have never seen Bill performing in the modern era , so the dvd of this concert is indescribably delicious . It's impossible to overstate it's importance in some of our collections. I've been waiting since 1995 for something like this !.
@2001pro Hi , it's ...For Stuart.....Stuart Adamson . He died (suicide) I think in Cuba 10 or so years ago . A concert was put together for him in Barrowlands Glasgow and Bill was asked to write and perform a tune...so he did . Stuart was a great fan of Bill and Be Bop Deluxe and asked him to produce his first album with thr Skids . Not sure if all this is bang on . Stay Young , Keith Stephenson . Leeds .
Thanks cakeywontdie, I'll keep a look out for the tour, my brother used to listen to Starburst Finish and the sound comign from his bedroom record player back in the day was amazing, I think I went on to be a bigger fan than him after that. I've played this track over and over in my car for the past week or so and still love it. As metioned here, great to hear the riffs from other BBD songs within this track. Nice to see so many BBD fans still out there. Take care all! See you in the age age!
I was at the Metropolis concert. One of the greatest nights off my life. Just wait until Bill releases "Above these clouds the sweetest dreams", the opener on his solo set that night. Absolutely stunning. Will never understand why he is so overlooked by the industry. At least he remains loved by those of us in the know. A genius, a real genius. Thank You Bill for the most wonderful music for the best part of 40 years now.
A true legend, thanks for posting this great music. Be Bop Deluxe were a favourite band back in the day and saw them at Hammersmith Odeon in 77. Bill is just the most wonderful player and gets so much emotion into his solos, the guitar seems to tlak to you. Amazing. Cheers smokehogg! Maybe, just maybe BBD could get back together even though Charlie is gone. To see them live again would be brillaint.
I saw The Skids live back in the day - I remember noting how Stuart played like Bill and even used the Sister Seagull riff ( which Bill uses on this track again ) which he then seemed to have developed into that Big Country guitar/bagpipe sound.
Also to hear the Modern Music opening ( 2:30 ) - my 1st and favourite Be Bop album ( & concert ! )... gladened my heart no end.
Time for a new band Bill ~ Platinum Deluxe ~ ..Electronica / Jazz / & re-imaginings of your classics
