The greatest Dalila of our time, SHE can take it this slow- how mesmerizing it is! Is that Gergiev on the podium I think?. SO gorgeous you just don't want it to ever end!
One of the all time most voluptuous mezzo voice. I had the luck to hear her from the start of her international career and I'm happy that my country gave her very early recognition.
@PonselleLover Mmm, Rosa Ponselle was FABULOUS. Strangely enough, even though she was compared to Rosa, Maria Callas had never heard Rosa's singing until later in her career. They must've been cut from the same cloth without ever knowing it.
@ShamusMacGuffin "Fabulous" is the appropriate word even though I think there are not enough superlatives to describe my supreme idol's art. About Callas and Ponselle, I read somewhere that being in New York in her prime youth, Maria used to listen to the radio broadcast performances of Rosa, her ear stuck on the radio ?
I normally wouldn't prefer this aria to be played so slowly, but the conductor is fabulous, the orchestrations are stunning as always, and Borodina sustains the lovely legato phrasing. Not my favorite mezzo, but she certainly has a stunning timbre and owns this role.
Something so wonderful about this performance by Olga Borodina's... words can't reach that personal dimension or the manner in which she possesses and implodes Saint-Saens' Dalila.. She is apart... Thank you!
What a magnificent rendition of this glorious aria- this is a great opera- and Borodina has said she was born to sing this role. Brava. Also, listen to the extraordinary Mon Coeur with Jessye Norman- astonishing.
Killer. advice.Who was the great Italian who sang Delilah long ago,? I was around long, long ago and might remember her.I'd like to Children please stop bickering and enjoy Mdme Borodina's great gift which she shares with you. There's an old English song (not opera lol)
Which says "You don't have to know the language , with a girl in your arms and a look in your eye. Best wishes for HAPPY listening. I did not hear any music for 12 years,12 YEARS!
As you have sung Dalila, lets hear it, lets see it here and now..or was it 1912? You must be the ghost of the Connechita Supervia then...come on! No shame inadmitting that you know nothing...
But there is always grace in admitting that you are a fake and that you can still learn from great artist and real artists like Olga Borodina...come on. We call that in the Opera de la BAstille 'Bonne gout'...

The music in this air should not only reflect the literal season but the melancholy of Dalila's love not the hysterical Lady Macbeth you seem to be confusing these two characters with...
Here is the character of a young woman in love despite being used as a political tool. Saints Saens music, especially in this air, reflects the impressionistic idyll of springtime, the calm and melancholy before the storm of events that happen later
It would be good if you took some french coaching especially if you sing and some courses in interpretation. This 'air' is of a Dalila in love, and longing after he whom she loves...
Now remeber, she was a Philistine princess who was then used later by her people to destroy the strength of Israel the judge Samson, by cutting off all his dreadlocks(lol)
Lovely !!! There was a video on youtube of that song with Shirley Verrett.Unfortunately, the owner closed his/her account.I want to thank her/him for having shown that beautiful video !

Cannot be compared to Callas's performance, but quite beautiful none-the-less.

you are right. callas never had the gorgeous tone that borodina has. callas was an amazing singer, but a beautiful voice she did not have.

@StarRaft I completely desagree :) The voice of Maria was unique, and very particular...Olga here is wonderful, and in her own répertoire....

Tout brûle en notre âme,
Et ta douce flamme
Vient sécher nos pleurs;
Tu rends à la terre,
Par un doux mystère,
Les fruits et les fleurs.

So this is the famous Olga Borodina...
Yes, beautiful voice.
But not what we need for Dalila : i know, it's so difficult to understand french operatic repertory and how it must be sung !
Verrett, Sills, Resnik, Tucker, Milnes and some others were able to do it... It's a matter of feeling... You grasp it or not...

Read Samson and Dalila and then, you will lecture me (or desesperately try to do it)... and have a look at the score too and you will see that :
1- Bad "tempo" : not what it is written by Saint-Saens (you see, it's the composer...)
2- Dynamic indications not respected by the singer : sing "sweet" when it's written "louder"...
3- No incarnation of the poisoned charms from Dalila who tries everything to captivate Samson's attention in that first act.
