Beautiful book! What an amazing capacity humans have for 'beauty and brutality'. I believe Liesel DID marry Max, for in the Epilogue it reads: 'In her final visions, she saw her three children, her grandchildren, her husband, and the long list of lives that merged with hers. Among them, lit like lanterns, were Hans and Rosa Hubermann, her brother, and the boy whose hair remained the colour of lemons forever.' It surprisingly doesn't mention Max, so I can only conclude that her husband is Max. :)
I just finished re-reading the book.. and each time, it leaves me a complete emotional wreck. It's so incredibly moving and beautiful and intense.. the man is absolutely brilliant. Definitely my favourite author. The way he uses words is simply magic.
dang i loved rudy so dang much. this author is truly amazing..i wish i could meet this guy, markus zusak is really great, his other books are pretty amazing as well, but the book thief still remains as my favorite.
The Book Thief is my favorite book ever written. I describe it to people as beautiful. It helped to save my life when I wanted to die. When I'm scared, I hold it close so that I know if I die I will be holding something beautiful close to me. I can't describe how much I adore this book. I don't think that a movie should be made out of it because it would never be as good as the book.
I read this book when I was 10 and I absolutely loved it. I've reread it and reread it over the past 5 years and it's still my favorite book of all time. I know people my age who love it and I know forty-five year olds who love it. The Book Thief is amazing. There's no other words to describe it.
Powerful book, and this interview helps us understand what went into the writing of it. We're discussing this book at my book club, and I'm recommending watching this video before our meeting.
@mebejennie25 Me too !!! Perfect for each other, Liesel collects words and Max collects images... I suggest someone should write Markus Zusak a letter, asking about this issue in particular. It'd be great knowing they ended up together as husband and wife <3
@meshi1990 i know we should just get everyone to all band together and right him so many requests he will have to respond. what would also be cool is a sequel like if max and liesel did get married! :)
I just finished reading this book. I feel at a loss for words of how it really made me feel. It was amazing, no less. I will definitely re-read it again. And again. I loved Liesel's relationship with Rudy, her Papa, and especially Max. If there's one thing I truly hate in this world, it's war.
wow... just finished the book. it was awesome... rudy really remindes me of one of my friends (not his crazy side but his sweet side) i love how when you read you could feel it. it wasnt just some words on a page(: i want all my friends t read it!
Max was always my favorite, though Rudy was too sweet. Shame he was bombed... This book is an absolute must read, for any young adult about to face the world, because in order not to repeat history, you first need to know and learn from it. Thank you for this book, and shedding light through darkness, and helping the world see that there was in fact happiness when it seemed impossible to pull through. This is genius.
I cried--scratch that---SOBBED at the end of the book. My mom told me to vaccuum. I wiped my tears, got up, and vaccuumed. I sat back down, picked the book up, read the epilogue, and SOBBED all over again.
One of my favorite books! It's just so beautiful, and it's amazing how such pure beauty (in Zusak's words) can be conveyed through a book about a time that was filled with horror.
i looooove this book! i plan on showing it to my english and history teachers because i think more people should read it! they dont usually want to read it because of the summary on the back and i almost didnt read it myself but im glad i did. this is one of the most amazing books i had ever read!
@fodera88 don't know when the book will be released as a movie but i've heard that the book have got the rights to 20th century fox. so i guess a movie will be out soon. :)
I'm sorry to say that this book is awful.Spam me if you want, but it is extremely slow, it has flat characters, and an uninteresting plot and timeline that has been revisited over and over. If I could describe this book in one word it would be: meh.
I am in love with this book. My bookshelf is literally filled with books, and this is definitely one of the most astounding pieces of literature I've ever read.
I can't even explain how many times I cried during this book, how many times I've laughed, smiled, held my breath.
From reading this book, I see death in a whole new perspective.
I can't even thank Markus Zusak enough for writing this story. The characters were so real, like they were there in flesh.
I've already made the disecion not to see the movie. This book was the most moving and beautiful peice of literature I have ever read. And I know the film won't live up to that.
@NevaehUchiha8 Oh no! Now I'm worried too! Movies never measure up to books, especially one this good! (*sort of a spoiler alert*) I wouldn't mind if they changed what happened to Rudy in the end though! That part made me cry right in the middle of the Denver airport! (And books usually never make my cry!) =)
@harpgirl42 it made me cry in the middle of a testing period during the annual state testing. and books usually never make me cry either! and Rudy and Hans were two of my three fav characters! (my other fav was Max)
This is the most incredible, moving, breathtaking books I've ever read. It brought me to tears so many times, and it taught me everything I'm sure of about life. Markus Zusak has such an amazing talent. <3
this is and always will be my favourite book. I'm very lucky to have a signed copy, and i've read it more times than i can remember. It's taught me everything.
I've read this book upwards of 5 times, and even though I was writing about it, dismantling it, deconstructing and unpacking every element from the font to the images to the narrative voice and the use of colour, of words, of silence, even though I stripped the flesh from it, it moves me. Bare pages and black lines still push me, make me feel. It is a triumph of aesthetics, and a tribute to the voices that we can never hear.
@MakeItCount14 omg i love this book, definitely my fave! I cried when i read what happened at the end...and i was in school when this happened people thought i was nuts but you know what it was totally worth it! thank you Marcus Zusak!
I just finished this book. It's amazing! I became totally obsessed with its structure, content and style. This author has the gift of imbedding his characters into his reader's mind. What an old soul! I want to read more of his work.

@killa60707 Ya exactly! And they say that this will be a movie but i doubt it will be as good as the book! Because in the movie they will have to cut off some of the narration of Death which will be very very sad!
I was given this book for a reading assignment over 1 year ago never knowing who Markus Zusak was, but when i was done i was amazed! & Since then i've read The Book Thief over 20 times & it still hasn't gotten old. Very Powerful book.
I personally think it should be made into a movie!
Theeeese types of books should be made into movies, instead of that Harry Potter whatnot (I'm not hating on harry potter), But what are you gonna learn from that? nothing.
Firstly, Harry Potter is a great book; its not just some teennage obsession thing. Secondly, you watch movies and read books to be enlightened, not to learn something new. Stick to how-to's if you want to learn. I'm sure millions of people around the world of all ages find harry potter entertaining and memorable. The moves were shit though, but the books were good. I agree, TBT shouldve been made into a movie!
I love this book. I am fasinated with that time period. It made me realize what the people outside of the concentration camps had to go through too. It is my favorite, and to haloboy996, i doubt he is Jewish if his mother wasn't taken when she lived in Germany. It is so well written and I can't wait till he come out with another book.
I defy anyone to read this book and not cry. Especially when Max is sent to the concentration camps and the part where Death goes to the Steiner's house. Such a haunting book, if the movie is only half as good it will still be an amazing film.
Sorry, I just presumed if you were watching the interview you'd already read it, really sorry! :( Although the Steiner thing is revealed quite early on, and as for Max, well I say nothing. :P
i absolutely love the book. it was nothing like i expected it to be and i felt so connected with Death, especially at the end when he admits that he's haunted by humans. there's just something about this book...
and i cried so much when they all died, then when leisel died. it was an incredible craft of words. bravo marcus zusak
The Book Thief is the kind of book that will inspire you to become a writer. Everything was outside of the box for this story and still it was so easy to read. There were too many times where I wanted to drop the book and hug the protagonist. A truly astonishing book, in all possible ways. An emotional experience.
Slumdog had a good story, but alot of the movie was made amazing by its direction. Maybe danny boyle should direct an adaption for this. Slumdog's book from a chapter or two i read was probably just as hard to adapt as this would be.

@killa60707 Ya exactly! And they say that this will be a movie but i doubt it will be as good as the book! Because in the movie they will have to cut off some of the narration of Death which will be very very sad!

@killa60707 Indeed. It's very original.

I was given this book for a reading assignment over 1 year ago never knowing who Markus Zusak was, but when i was done i was amazed! & Since then i've read The Book Thief over 20 times & it still hasn't gotten old. Very Powerful book.
I personally think it should be made into a movie!
Theeeese types of books should be made into movies, instead of that Harry Potter whatnot (I'm not hating on harry potter), But what are you gonna learn from that? nothing.
AYearFromNow08 2 years ago

When death came to Ruby's house I balled.
I couldnt read it for hours.
It made me realize how horrible and quick things can happen..
I loved this books everyone should be forced to read it or not..

I defy anyone to read this book and not cry. Especially when Max is sent to the concentration camps and the part where Death goes to the Steiner's house. Such a haunting book, if the movie is only half as good it will still be an amazing film.

note to self: Don't read youtube comments on the book when you havent finished it yet..
Aww you ruined it for me
jellybelly903 2 years ago
Sorry, I just presumed if you were watching the interview you'd already read it, really sorry! :( Although the Steiner thing is revealed quite early on, and as for Max, well I say nothing. :P

omg.
i absolutely love the book. it was nothing like i expected it to be and i felt so connected with Death, especially at the end when he admits that he's haunted by humans. there's just something about this book...
and i cried so much when they all died, then when leisel died. it was an incredible craft of words. bravo marcus zusak

leisel didn't die. but i do agree that it was well crafted. the whole book is like one long poem.

The Book Thief is the kind of book that will inspire you to become a writer. Everything was outside of the box for this story and still it was so easy to read. There were too many times where I wanted to drop the book and hug the protagonist. A truly astonishing book, in all possible ways. An emotional experience.

The book thief is the most beautiful book I've ever read.
My grandpa was in the concentration camps and it makes me proud to be his granddaughter and German/Australian.

For a book competition i had to read this book and the lightning thief (not to mention a few not worth mentioning).
I loved how the story was; perfectly adaptable, if done well i can even see another Slumdog or LOTR etc.
Guess which oe they made into a movie :|
LaughOutLoudYT 2 years ago
much more original than slumdog. i don't know how such an amazing book can be made into a movie that would live up to everything the book captures.
tiltilrox 2 years ago 3
Slumdog had a good story, but alot of the movie was made amazing by its direction. Maybe danny boyle should direct an adaption for this. Slumdog's book from a chapter or two i read was probably just as hard to adapt as this would be.
They deffinately should make it into a movie tho.
