The truth is that Sands etc.. were used as pawns by SF who wanted martyrs for propaganda. Now in 2012 those same SF men have long abandonded the 'armed struggle' and have accepted Northern Ireland's place in the UK. They currently sit as part the status-quo in a British ran, partionist settlement with no game-plan for unity. From looking at your username, I assume that you consider it to have been solely a sectarian conflict, which is not entirely true. In fact, Sinn Fein had on numerous occasions expressed their desire to unify the entire working class, regardless of religious creed.

Arguably, the obvious political tension would have contributed to this, as well as a level of mistrust which would have permeated within Donegal at the time. It is likely that someone assumed that your Great-Great-Grandfather had connections with British forces. Many such claims were made during this time, and so the IRA would have taken precautionary action.
