That word is kanashii because back then love is thought of as a sad thing because it was very suffering and kinds of separates people. Just think of Yukimura needing to fight with his brother and Mitsuhide killling Nobunaga. However, through modernization, kanashii became itoshii or what we know now today as love in modern Japanese.
