@wks1978 The notion that we are all connected and nothing more than atoms going through stages of existence can indeed not exist unless science is at a level to comprehend it. However, one can have the awareness that we are all part of a bigger system and not above or below anything, based on observation (like the indians.) I think that realizing we are just as much part of the universe as a planet, is simply the next step in consciousness, that science helped us achieve.
First pants, then shoes. Our decisions are made always leaving out what we do not understand, but one can strive to understand what is left out. Alan Watts is wonderful.
"who am i?" really? well, fundamentally i am a philosopher. i realized this at age 2, through my own observations and through no influence of persuasion from anyone else. i hope that answers your question alan watts. I know myself :)
@babblebah321 no, I've always asked the big philosophical questions. From the first moments of my consciousness, up til today (with no end in sight).
A philosopher is the most fundamental element of my being. I am always trying to understand reality.
I cannot understand how everyone else on earth aren't philosopher's also...everyone is so casual, so used to, and unquestioning of the current state of reality. I seek to Know. For it's own sake.
@FreeBeDrug Fair enough, maybe I was too rash to judge you, and that's my own problem. I have also struggled in the past (and still do) with the idea that all others aren't obessed with philosophical issues, or what my friend calls "the great big what the fuck". To combat my resentment towards this baffling phenomenon I try and remind myself quite rudely that we are all wired differently and that to expect other people to be what they are not is borderline insane.
The screening out could be because humans want to only know certain things. We've probably evolved this way for a spiritual purpose. Maybe, we choose to screen out these things because we CHOOSE to ignore them spiritually. I know that you do not do this consciously. But, what if this is just a result of a spiritual evolution and we don't even know? There probably is a reason why we do this and it could be linked to the mystery of life that we don't want to face but KNOW deep deep deep inside.
"The web of life, let me try from the first to indicate the point that we're aiming at. The point is this: that human consciousness is, at the same time as being a form of awareness and sensitivity and understanding, it's also a form of ignorance. The ordinary everyday consciousness that we have leaves out more than it takes in and because of this, it leaves out things that are terribly important. It leaves out things that would, if we did know them, allay our anxieties and fears and horrors. "
it might get screened out because it's not useful to our physical life. we have learned to live a certain way without them and only use what things we do need to adapt to our environment.
This speech reminds me of Huxley's Doors of Perception. Its interesting to note that in Huxley's work he states that our brain's function is to keep the body working, therefore you can say it at least began and developed as a survival tool for humans. The brain rejects most information, and limits itself to the most basic needs for survival. To interfere with this filtering (which we definitely can do) is to open the doors of perception. But by doing so, to some extend we lower our guard.
so if we are everything, then, what do we really look like? we look like everything? I guess that makes more sense than sying that we are human flesh. But why are we stuck on earth? Why are we stuck in the bodies? I just can't figure this out
@Zee96969696 You are all there is. There is nothing outside your own perception. Your current experience right now is for you the only experience right now, and is thus all there is. Your existence and your experience, (synonymous really), are everything. All experience is your experience and all existence is your existence. Find this correlation between existence and experience and there won't be any more questions.
@Zee96969696 I think the best way to look at it, is imagine each human's experience, (their cognitive journey through life), is a movie. And you are the viewer. You can only watch, one movie at a time. Only focus on one screen at a time. As such, you live each life, one at a time. Now imagine that there's a movie for every living thing.
There's no reason btw, that two movies can't exist about the same setting. ie: Robin's side of the story.
I think this is why its wise to create a peaceful world To treat people with respect. Because they're you. Their experience lies in your future, and your past.
Just my personal theories. I'd hope that when someone dies you either:
a) move to a better world in the next life(which I define as being filled with more time of love and joy) , if you strive for it while living.
b) after death revert to an all knowing state, and choose what to do about it.
@Kinaryn Because no one gave your life meaning. There's too many things for your life to potentially "mean" than to "mean" something prefixed and determined by anyone but yourself.
It sounds to depressing from the outset, doesn't it?
the cycle of interchange of your atoms continues unabated. Your current body does not have the same atoms as your infant body did, or even as your body a year ago did. The same holds true for the mental world of your brain. Your brain is always re-wiring itself as you learn, as you experience things, as memories are formed, and so on. Just as your physical body is always changing, so too is your mind. And this changes in your mind are likewise due to your interaction with the external world
The atoms that compose your skin, and indeed your entire body, are always being exchanged with the outside universe as you breath, eat, drink, excrete, secrete, grow, and heal. Looking at it from this perspective, you cannot really say where you begin and where you end, and therefore any contrast that you draw between yourself and the external world will always seem fuzzy and arbitrary.
"In Arthur C. Clarke's story "The Nine Billion Names of God," a Tibetan monastery uses a huge mainframe to process a coded list of all the possible names of God. The Americans working on the project think the lamas are crazy, but when the last line of code spits out, the stars begin to wink out in the night sky, ushering in the end of the world." - Erik Davis digital Buddhism
"We have entered an era that sanctions the psychoactive use of commercial chemicals, not just to cure disease or even to relieve suffering, but to reformat who we feel we are."
"push-button neural re-programming, I felt as if I had momentarily slipped into a prequel to Brave New World as remixed by Phil Dick."
He's thought provoking, but i disagree with his connotation of faith. This attempt at validating God by belittling human capacity, has been undertaken by other thinkers, including Spinoza and it doesn't convince me.
Human limitation doesn't have to be a default into faith, simply because it is flawed and unable to understand everything. To exalt God because of our sensual, inhibiting worldly constraints, is asking to sacrifice identity as a human being, and i won't do it.
@Brooder85 you know when we die we humans "lose our identity" and then we become the corpse your rotting corpse feeds bacteria, fungi, and various invertebrates and scavengers, fueling new life. The same is true of more abstract phenomena. The relationships you had during life, the friendships and bonds that you had with other people, the things that happened because of you, the effects that you had upon the world, are also linked to you causally.
@Brooder85 These too are transitory, but the fact remains that you are fundamentally linked to all other things, materially and immaterially, and cannot be separated from anything else.
I like Alan Watts, and I think listening to him is a great introduction to eastern philosophy and religion for westerners like myself, but he usually comes off as too preachy and not critical enough for my tastes.
@3leftsandaright He's an entertainer, he's a philosophiser. He studied Eastern philosophy, Zen Buddhism & Taoism amongst other theologies and sciences and metaphysics. He saw Buddhism & Taoism as forms of psychotherapy. He didn't restrict himself to any one discipline.
Alan Watts, Friedrich Nietzsche and Jiddu Krishnamurti are people in whose philosophy everyone should be interested. Alan teaches you to leave your ego behind, Nietzsche celebrates the acceptance of life, and Jiddu is just the most peaceful and calm mind known to me.
first you realize nothing really matters, and for a while that may terrify you, but one day youll realize that even that doesn't matter, and then with any luck, you will let go and finally be free. (I'm still struggling with step 2)
Need your help! Fans of Alan Watts beware. There is some guy named Alan Watt (no "s" at the end of Watt) who is trying to piggy back off of the name recognition He has videos and wrote silly books on grandiose political ideas, metaphysical subject matter, and conspiracy theories. If you really listen to any of his stuff, you'll quickly realize speaks on the generalized levels that fools speak from. Dislike him and his videos please. We don't want the Real Alan Watts to be confused for this guy.
I think everyone is entitled to their opinions, with that stated after listening to Watts, I definitely have an opinion on his theory....I do not believe that I am a God. I don't consider myself close minded (if so I wouldn't have listened) however, I do think we are in control of our actions or choices and spirituallly can dictate how we choose to handle occurences. I beleive that Jesus rules and is the son of God in my life. He provides his grace and direction per my spiritual choices.~Peace~
@Tonlondong No, that's the thing, you know exactly what you perceive that you know but you've forgotten about who you truly are. Everyone has. So what you need to know is there but a shadow is cast upon it causing you to only open your eyes to the small world we live in, past experiences and upbringing. There's a vast unconscious universe of life and death beyond the spot on our eye. One must be enlightened to visit this universe, but you mustn't know you're trying. You just need will.
There is nothing mysterious or sacred about life/existence. A bunch of half hazard particles doing random shit to make a messy, brutally cold world where you are ultimately fucked by death (among other things) despite your best efforts.
There is nothing mysterious or sacred about life/existence. A bunch of half hazard particles doing random shit to make a messy, brutally cold world where you are always fucked.
many people think they are better than the rest and this leads to all sorts of problems therefore even the teacher is the same and feels power of the students..these people make money on something we all do..
'It is possible to live only as long as life intoxicates us; once we are sober we cannot help seeing that it is all a delusion, a stupid delusion! Nor is there anything funny or witty about it; it is only cruel and stupid.'
On the cosmological scale, there isn't much difference between you and a street-light. The street-light, you see, helps many more sentient beings to see than you and I ever will; ergo, the street-light is more useful to the cosmos than our humdrum selves. This means that the street-light is a few steps closer nirvana than we fleshy monkeys. Do you doubt the wisdom of this pessimist? How many have you yourself enlightened in your lifetime? You are not as important as a lamp-post.
@godno1god Firstly, we could look at lamp posts as extensions of ourselves. Lamp Posts don't run without people to run them and turn them on. Also, you seem to be confusing the idea of enlightenment and clear sight with your eyes with a completely different kind of enlightenment and clear sight altogether.
What he is trying to say is that the spirit shields you from the darkness. He is trying to put your focus on darkness(hell), and keep you away from light(jesus).
everyone is talking about nihilism and negativity and meaninglessness. But that's not what I heard Mr. Watts say; he just called everyone watching this video God. And if you don't believe in God he called you Tao. He did not say we were nothing, he said we were an expression of the biggest something; that each and every one of us is a microcosm of the totality of all existence. That doesn't sound like nihilism to me...
Everyone that uses drugs except Alan watts seems to be super depressed and cannot handle their own reality. How the hell did he do it? I stopped smoking because i found everyone around me to be out of balance, including myself.
im looking for more new ideas. ive stumbled onto robert anton wilson, timothy leary and watts. i love it. i was wodering if there are more im missing out on?
a shame this guy drank away his brain/our bigget asest. i think full awareness is being able to succesfuly connect day time to dreams.when you dream/ i think the energies lead hints on wht to focus on in the day ..i think dreams are connected to concsness/ and when people bridge them together and can figure out how to read them/ they help ppl reach full potential..knowledge and awareness enhances dreams as ppl age..its only the body that wears down/ the brain grows..eff religion/ rely onself
I hope this guy used his power to bang every hot chick in California....otherwise it would be a huge waste of talent...the world is like the end of the carpet...which is where your head will be shortly be disturbing the dust baby...vibrations in the universe....did I mention colors and harps and how good my oral sex skills are? This is the closest to understanding chicks as man may ever come...
@sixtiksix guys r never satisfied.. alan watts may have said a few cool things/ but as a human being he was pathetic and that i dont think he ever met his equal/ or could love anything more than his face.. he thought he was god.. and anyone who thinks to much always goes back to zero.. to explain the booze and women.. not the most respectable type.. but o well gotta have diffrnt versions of asshole
@ktbaby077 what does it really matter if he was respectable or not? It's just your arbitrary judgement of a man with a deep understanding of the human mind and soul. He was, in essence, just a messenger of an idea that is much bigger than any social "shortcomings" he may have had.
@jtowens55 it matters to me in finding his ideas legitt..ther a good starting point/but didnt seem to work for him in taking things in moderation.. he self-destructed/ therefore i concur al little bit of philosophy is good.he had to much of it i guess.
@RhinoStompin I think that is a too broad of a statement. Because if someone like Alan Watts, Timothy Leary, John C Liley, or Terence McKenna didn't get their heads wrapped up with other activities from other cultures, they wouldn't have half of the insight as they did. However, I do realize what you are getting at, but simply stating that someone shouldn't get wrapped in others activities, sounds like we should all try to come up with our own ideas. but we need to share, and find them together
We do need to share and find them together... What we don't need though are closed minded folks that have never tried anything and yet they are going to dictate that it is WRONG only because they themselves were told it was wrong. To me that is a pathetic basis for one to base their opinion. Basically some folks ignorance disgusts me...
@barnyakj That's a good point. In a way I guess you're right. However, if I was going to pack a parachute and jump out a plane with it, I would rather get instruction from someone that has packed their own parachute and jumped than somebody who is reciting what someone else told them.
These individuals are sober enough to understand that teaching others what to do is the only means for survival. It's something that's been stolen by media. The idea that it's your own business is something that's been sold to you by by big business to produce individual consumers and true ignorance.
Survival is our only business and we cannot as a species without each other. Working as a conscious whole.
people are always looking for something more in life whether they realize it or not...it is part of the human condition. Sadly, more often than not they do not realize that they are searching, they wander aimlessly through life doing this and acquiring that; only to die on the level with which they were born. No one here cares to be wrapped up in the activites of others. These lectures are akin to oases in a vast desert of ignorance, a place for seekers to drink and move on.
@MrF2ep I agree with the majority of your statement. Be it as it may that my own ignorance could be blinding myself, I still maintain that some folks are so lost in self conception that work and money and "stuff" is really all this is! Therefore guiding their focus only towards the question: "How can I create this material world to better suit me?" (Hence telling others the "right way" to exist!) I know it's harsh,. but damn! If this where not true why does mnoney have so much power over us?
@92451721921892113 This statement of yours is beautiful in so many ways! It is certainly one to be noted. do you have a name sir? I want to put this on facebook! for my friends to read!
@RhinoStompin i turn on the tv and see tons of commercials drugs that are good and bad also i see commercials for law firms suing for wrongful deaths because of prescription drugs of all kinds.
i know people want peace of mind and its an "unfair" world and some people do have illness of the mind and there's nothing anyone or drug can do for them now but maybe in the future will get it right or maybe not.
@RhinoStompin Moron! why did you not mind "YOUR" own "fuckin business"? Here you are "dictating" to others. So be consistent with YOUR philosophy and shut your mouth, don't tell people anything, just exist temporarily then die. Or, you can show the weakness of your stupid world view and give a rebuttal to my comment and to anyone else that disagrees with you.
@RhinoStompin Ok, maybe I was a bit harsh, nothing personal. It was a criticism of your position not you. Just think, its like saying, "you should not tell people what to do" but what has just happened, the person just told someone what to do, that's foolish. Or "you should not judge" as they judge your judgement. Or, "just let people believe what they want" as they tell you what to believe.
See my point? besides you did use cuss words in ur comments, I just quoted you.
wow im go to watch this amazing man speak about life and he is so smart its unbelievable so decide to see what the comments say
and all i got was garbage like this
"get high"
"im high"
yada yada seriously stoners i have nothing against weed i think it is nothing more than herbs but you guys completely just say it out loud on a video of a great man just for attention
ok you do weed what do you want us to say? something like this
@skoubo1 sorry. ive seen to many dislike comments..and quite frankly i find them all annoying and pointless as hell.and it just hapend t obe u i blew a fuse 2 yo.sry.
As soon as you start to fully appreciate the nihilism and meaningless of life, you can start to fully enjoy it without worrying about exams, work etc. and other stresses that society has conditioned you into thinking are important. They're not.
@stoxocube18 i don't know if nihilism is something to be appreciated.. I thought nihilism was the philosophy that destroying things is good.. Granted, I love destroying things, but only to a certain limit usually.. Can you expand on this..
@stoxocube18 Is your comment a joke? Im honestly completely confused, either you are one of the biggest fools Ive ever encountered or this is a joke. I don't know how u got 26 thumbs up. Life is not meaningless and if you believe that you need to reexamine things. I cant believe I'm reading this junk on an Alan Watts video... its like you just wrote exactly the opposite of what he was saying in this video.
@KrimlinTHEdeems I don't think Alan Watts commented at all on whether life is or isn't meaningless in this video, nor in others I have seen so far. Perhaps elsewhere, but not here.
@stoxocube18 I disagree with nihilism, but I do agree with the lack of meaning. There is no external meaning to life, it's all generated from our mind/body/soul/whatever we "are." There is no "me." However, there is a reality IMHO. I just don't think any of us get to experience it fully. We each have a set of filters, a viewpoint. "Important" is in the eye of the beholder, but the actual facts are not.
@stoxocube18 That aspect of nihilism is very important, but I'm having troubles with sorting out what is useful and what is not. Existential crisis aaaaaaaah fuck
@stoxocube18 Nihilism and meaninglessness are completely different. The former is about destruction, the latter recognizes that life is neutral and only YOU give it meaning.
life has meaning in the sense that there is a means to eat that proves life has meaning you mean you haven't ate anything all day ? there has never been any emptiness because emptiness implies nothingness also i herd that when Buddha reached enlightenment he had lower back pain in other words he didn't reach enlightenment because he still had a physical body also i have seen many Buddhists eat animal body parts knowing there were fruits around just the facts peace love and knowledge forever
@Pejorativez It can help thoughts/ideas arise more spontaneously and get past certain filters you and your environment have created. Cannabis can also allow for somewhat of ego-softening and/or a better 3rd person perspective. But it's important to remember everyone's experience with drugs will not be the same and they don't just hold some magical philosophical answers that anyone who tries them will find.
If you want to know who you are, who you really really are - the answer is so simple. Just pay attention to your conscioussness. Recognize each 'thought' as 'you' trying to show you, 'you'.
Marijuana doesn't expand the mind, it just makes certain people think about things they never thought about before. I've used it before and it makes me feel nice so i'm not against it, I'd just assume that most people interested in philosophy don't need it.
It seems that psychedelics are an increasingly common way for individuals to come to terms with existence.
I myself have experimented with such drugs during my late teens to early adulthood, and believe that without their influence in my life I would be a much more close minded person.
I'm not saying this should be the case for all people, but I think that many peoples lives could be benited from the occassional use of such substances, including LSD, Cannabis and DMT.
People have been using psychedelics for thousands of years for spiritual enlightenment and self inquiry, not to mention their use in psychotherapy, to think that they can 'give you no insight what so ever into anything at all' is completely, completely ridiculous. Study: the-medical-dictionary dott com slash dimethyltryptamine_article_3 dot htm
apeshallnevakillape: dickandjiz is right, quit focusing on the substance... if you went to the moon you'd be interested in the moon, and the view, and where you were... not the spaceship you came on. That state of mind was in you all along, and just because being high helped you get there doesn't mean it was the key to the lock or something.
@teganyavo I recomend Alan Watts Psychedelics videos. Im not 'focusing on the substance' I think your downplaying the power of psychedelics to transform consciousness. I saw a proweed comment and agreed that weed advanced my consciousness. Im still young, only 16, sure I eventually wouldve become interested in philosophy but I dont think it wouldve been for years. Psychedelics are like rocket fuel, you can put it in a p.o.s. and it wont do anything but put it in a rocket and you have lift off!
@teganyavo Looked up the definition of narcotic, it is just about, some of the definitions agree with the effects of Marijuana like lack of pain and sluggishness. Though I can see it's a bit of a stretch to say it is compared to other drugs. Thanks for the comment man
I already think/thought like this as a child, and never needed marijuana to 'get there' in that 'headpsace' but enjoyed conversations with folks who were often high. Problem with this kind of sensitivity is it can lead to depression, knowing that the world/society as we have it is so ASLEEP and distanced from their emotions/senses. Being an artist helps, as it buffers the expectations from others to 'be normal' (which is really insane).... Would be amazing if we could all vibrate in harmony.
Life is meaningless. I live life like this, and I have never been happier. Life can be simple but people over complicate things, and this the problem. Don't think about how to fix your life, as a matter of fact don't think at all. Crazy, you call me? No, it's not insanity, it's balance, and it's greater than love, because love requires thought. I live life in the present, and appreciate life for what it is, rather than why it's the way it is. I live for the better of our future. Life is simple.
i am sick and tired of hearing many of you guys asking 'oh, why should i be happy' or ' why should i care' because everything is meaningless?
the mere concept of things having a meaning, things having a point and being worth anything are only existent in the human mind. that concept is an evolutionary adaptation of ours to be able to understand things which aided in our survival hundreds and thousands of years ago, before humans even roamed the earth.
not only can we create the concept of meaning but we can also twist that and create a concept of meaninglessness. this sort of unhealthy, irrational thinking can shut you out to the wonder and beauty that surrounds all of us every day.
Personal reality is a tune we cannot get out of our heads.

Just my personal theories. I'd hope that when someone dies you either:
a) move to a better world in the next life(which I define as being filled with more time of love and joy) , if you strive for it while living.
b) after death revert to an all knowing state, and choose what to do about it.
c) wake up from a dream

@Alec0124 I'd re-up for living again but as another form or different person. Try other experiences out. :)

Why is this video called 'Meaningless Life'?
Kinaryn 6 months ago
@Kinaryn Because no one gave your life meaning. There's too many things for your life to potentially "mean" than to "mean" something prefixed and determined by anyone but yourself.
It sounds to depressing from the outset, doesn't it?
LordShivasServant 6 months ago
the cycle of interchange of your atoms continues unabated. And this changes in your mind are likewise due to your interaction with the external world
92451721921892113 6 months ago
The atoms that compose your skin, and indeed your entire body, are always being exchanged with the outside universe as you breath, eat, drink, excrete, secrete, grow, and heal. Looking at it from this perspective, you cannot really say where you begin and where you end, and therefore any contrast that you draw between yourself and the external world will always seem fuzzy and arbitrary.

JinxOz 7 months ago

Brooder85 6 months ago
what identity is there to be lost?
92451721921892113 6 months ago
@Brooder85 you know when we die we humans "lose our identity" and then we become the corpse your rotting corpse feeds bacteria, fungi, and various invertebrates and scavengers, fueling new life. The same is true of more abstract phenomena. The relationships you had during life, the friendships and bonds that you had with other people, the things that happened because of you, the effects that you had upon the world, are also linked to you causally.

You are not as important as a lamp-post.
godno1god 10 months ago
@godno1god Firstly, we could look at lamp posts as extensions of ourselves. Lamp Posts don't run without people to run them and turn them on. everyone is talking about nihilism and negativity and meaninglessness.

Here's something to ponder...
Why do all the "Sober" people get their heads wrapped up in the activities of other people?
The only thing I might "tell" someone else to do is to: "Live your own life and quit tellin others what to do." It's not YOUR fuckin business.
Sadly though dictating others lives IS a cash cow business, and that's sad.
RhinoStompin 11 months ago 46
@RhinoStompin I think that is a too broad of a statement. Because if someone like Alan Watts, Timothy Leary, John C Liley, or Terence McKenna didn't get their heads wrapped up with other activities from other cultures, they wouldn't have half of the insight as they did. However, I do realize what you are getting at, but simply stating that someone shouldn't get wrapped in others activities, sounds like we should all try to come up with our own ideas. but we need to share, and find them together
whosnkn 11 months ago
We do need to share and find them together... What we don't need though are closed minded folks that have never tried anything and yet they are going to dictate that it is WRONG only because they themselves were told it was wrong. people are always looking for something more in life whether they realize it or not...it is part of the human condition.
MrF2ep 9 months ago
@MrF2ep I agree with the majority of your statement. Be it as it may that my own ignorance could be blinding myself, I still maintain that some folks are so lost in self conception that work and money and "stuff" is really all this is! Can anyone expand on why marijuana opens the mind? I haven't tried it before.
This question is in contrast to e.g. alcohol, which changes your perception temporary.
Pejorativez 1 year ago
@Pejorativez It can help thoughts/ideas arise more spontaneously and get past certain filters you and your environment have created. Cannabis can also allow for somewhat of ego-softening and/or a better 3rd person perspective. But it's important to remember everyone's experience with drugs will not be the same and they don't just hold some magical philosophical answers that anyone who tries them will find.

Marijuana doesn't expand the mind, it just makes certain people think about things they never thought about before. I've used it before and it makes me feel nice so i'm not against it, I'd just assume that most people interested in philosophy don't need it.

Well put.
It seems that psychedelics are an increasingly common way for individuals to come to terms with existence.
I myself have experimented with such drugs during my late teens to early adulthood, and believe that without their influence in my life I would be a much more close minded person.
I'm not saying this should be the case for all people, but I think that many peoples lives could be benited from the occassional use of such substances, including LSD, Cannabis and DMT.
jordaniothefourth 1 year ago
People have been using psychedelics for thousands of years for spiritual enlightenment and self inquiry, not to mention their use in psychotherapy, to think that they can 'give you no insight what so ever into anything at all' is completely, completely ridiculous.

@World0fWowcraft
not only can we create the concept of meaning but we can also twist that and create a concept of meaninglessness. this sort of unhealthy, irrational thinking can shut you out to the wonder and beauty that surrounds all of us every day.
