I love JRTs My is 8 yrs old and mellowed out--wish I would have trained when he was young--but I had my hands full just keeping him from destroying my house! He sure is lovable.
why do u do this its nothing like real work for the dog i always start my russels in a nice small fox hole a chiwawa would bay a fox in a cage its no test of a dog
I hate it when people say that a short tail or whatever is an "undesirable" trait...forget all that hoity-tooth stuff! A jack Russell is a rugged little guy, and that's all that matters!
@Javelinagirls lol, People MAKE their Jack Russell's tails short by DOCKING them. JRTs are BORN with long tails and are ALTERED to docked tails. Your comment is misinformed.
The docking of a Jack Russell terriers tail is optional as far as breed standard is concerned. In fact, a tail that is too short (less then 4 inches) is an undesirable trait in a JRT because the tail is used to pull the dog out of burrows and tunnels.
@lockpickchick WHAT!? That's HORRIBLE!!! I can't believe I didn't know that!!!!!!!! I feel so bad for my Jack Russell Terrier...it's like I cut off part of his body!!! NO!
@Javelinagirls Oh hun! I didn't mean to upset you. If it makes you feel a bit better, they are so young they probably don't remember, like a young boy getting circumcised. You would have a difficult time finding a guy who recalls that event! And it's part of their PENIS getting cut off. :) It's funny you mentioned that the tail was too long, tho, cause my Jack has a full tail and I thought she was abnormal until I read the breed standard. Which was how I knew that long tailed Jacks are A-ok. :)
I didn't know jacks came in 3 types. I rescued an older one about three years ago. She has the short legs, and coat. She doesn't look very stocky though. She is a lot shorter then most of the longer legged jacks I have seen. Looks kind of like yours w/out the stripe down the face. Shes also very timid. Previous owners weren't very nice to her. They moved and abandoned her. Too bad cause she is a great dog.
@chinbunny1 A true Jack is at 12 inches or just under they have 3 coat types smooth, Wire, or broken which is a mix of smooth and wire there is also the Parson Russell Terrier (taller) only difference in the two breeds is height. And they are taking Jack off of Jack Russell Terrier because of the breed founders family...it is now the Russell Terrier...
@JackDoxin07 Thanks for the information. I must have a true jack russel then. And she has the smooth coat. Are the going to approve the russel terrier as its own breed then, besides the parsons?
@chinbunny1 You're welcome! I love to get breed info out! A good site for you to check out is jrtca.com As for the AKC the breed is now in the miscellaneous class. Which after a certian period of time the breed's are reviewed and either added to a breed or group ... so we we'll wait and see! I'm hoping they do admit it as it's own breed because it is a breed I love and would love to continue and maybe one day try confirmation with it but it has to be recognized first! :)
My jack russel/corgi mix is around 7-9 yrs old....she was abandoned and we rescued her....she was really timid...until we got a rabbit.....she barks and barks all day long....trying to get at the rabbit.....she becomes youthful when shes around the rabbit.... =J
I have a jack russell and I am interested in teaching him to fox hunt. I am a big hunting and my favorite game ever is fox. How does it work? How do you teach them to hunt the foxes? Where did you get a fox to train him and what do they do when they find the fox? Do you kill the fox or do you let him? I know I want to use him to fox hunt no matter what the situation. There are way to may foxes around here.
I have a jack russell but im not sure what breed he is, his biger than the one on this clip and has the sam body build i would like to train him to hunt rabbits. any tips?
my jack russell went down a fox hole today, fox bite her on d the nose and she came back out, shes on youtube killing a rat, her names sandy, thats a nice jack u got, hope d hunting goes well
Cute dog, nice size. I have a five month old Shortie Jack. He's all white with a tan mask. I was unsure about getting a JRT, but heard that the Shorties are often less aggressive and hyper than the taller Parson type. So far, it seems true, he is more laid back than I expected.
@Bulif There are actually three types: Jack Russell (short legs), Parson Russell (longer legs, about equal height and length) and a working Russell (short legs, a bit stockier variety). There are also different coat types so yeah, they can look different.. :)
ya :D he is nearly 8 weeks now ,called him Axel :P he all white with a black and brown haed he so cool :D its a lot of work tho :O but hope it will be worth it :)
hahaha my jack russell like freaked out when she heard this barking... never seen her react that strongly. that bark must actually mean something to her!
Best dogs ever.
