Near the end of the automatic cycle, the feeder part of the spindle tries to come out forward to detect the presence of another record. If it's blocked by the waiting record, the turntable will start the next record at the end of the current one. But if it successfully slides all the way out, it'll take the tonearm to its rest and shut off next time.
I have this turntable from when I was a kid. Once you put on the long changer spindle (available at Garage-A-Records) and re-lube the mechanism, place your records on the top part of the spindle, lock them in place by pulling that holder in the back all the way up then forward and dropping it down onto the top record, then pull the "auto" lever towards you.

There is a pin by the spindle. Remove it and pull the platter off. clean out the bearing with q tips and relube with axle grease.
