  • Fred Barnes once again proves to be his own worse enemy and enemy to Republicans and Democrats. Barnes is yet another political hack at unfair, imbalanced & unashamed Fox "news". Evidence: Bush hired Fox's Tony Snow while Fox hired Bush's Karl Rove and Reagan's pet criminal, Oliver North, then Fox shamelessly give Mike Huckabee his own show which does nothing put anti-Obama propaganda and pro-McCain lies - the poor old guy's older than my great grandfather. Even Murdoch confesses to Fox's bias.

  • well, no.1.i apologize for wanting mr. barnes to choke, he maybe a demagogue and a professional rabble-rouser, but he's a human being(sort of). as to what we are, we are not a purist democracy. even one of your right-winged loons, pastor john dekker acknowledged that we are a constitutional republic, a country built around the laws of the constitution. 3rd. in god we trust was placed on most u.s.currency in 1954, an asinine product of the cold war.

  • Barnes. What a scum bag. Its what Hitler used to solidify his grip on power. Demonize the Jews and gays. I think a lot of republicans don't want to be associated with these sorts of fascist tactics. They'll backfire this year.

  • Typical of the GOP to fearmonger & hatemonger the populace, turning neighbor against neighbor. Divide & conquer is their modus operandi. Barnes is correct that the GOP exploited gay issues in 2006, just as they have for well over a decade, & it will energize their base. But it is not enough this time to do the trick, just as Buchannon's hate speech at the 1992 convention actually damaged Bush I's presidential bid. Now, as then, America is in too dire a situation to fall for it this time around.

  • Bush was arguably elected in 2004 exploiting the gay issue in Ohio, the election was that close & some say conservative blacks voting against gays was Bush's margin of win. But the GOP tried to use gays again in 2006 to rally their forces & it failed them, the GOP losing more seats than they gained. It is a failed policy the GOP want to resurrect because they know that they are in a desperate situation. They would do better to exploit an October Surprise (Iran) than to continue bashing gays.

  • and if you deny us these rights, they would appear to be religious in nature, as opposed to constitutional.

  • hello dseanmat.we live in a secular constitutional republic. our govt. neither supports religion, nor opposes it. everything that barnes says sounds like it belongs in a church not our govt. if you understand the bill of rights, the fact is that it protects the rights of the minority, any minority, from the absolute feelings of the majority.we have as much a right to marry as do you. and we have a right to join the military, also same as you.

  • "Secular republic?" Have you ever noticed the words "In God We Trust" on our currency, or the taking of legal oaths on a Bible in court? Or swearing in the President on a Bible? NEWS BULLETIN: we live in a democracy. And as long as there are people of faith in said democracy, those people can, should, and will vote their religiously-informed consciences on every issue. If your ways are better than mine, then persuade me and others like me that you are right. That's how democracy works.

  • It's ironic how "oaklynlen" decries the alleged bigotry of Fred Barnes, then goes on to say that s/he hopes "people like Barnes will one day choke on it," thus revealing who the real bigot is. It is perfectly legitimate for socially and religiously conservative people to vote their consciences on any issue, including gay marriage. Whose consciences should they take into account when they vote? Those of radical liberal secularists?

  • it's typical of people like you, dseanmat, who are probably bigots, & well aware of it, who try to turn the tables, incorrectly as their only form of defense.

i agree with oaklynlen. i love exposing ignorant bigots & haters. however by exposing them i too am called a hater myself, not because i am, but because the haters ultimate goal is to discredit me, turn the tables & blame their hate on others.

sorry dseanmat, you're bullshit don't work no more. shove your hate up your bigoted asshole!

  • How ironic that you refer to your hatred of "people like me" in your defense of bigotry. Whenever you paint an entire group of people with such a broad brush stroke (particularly in such an abusive manner) you expose your own bigotry and hatred. The ultimate irony is that the so-called "people like me" will still love "people like you," long after you're done judging and hating us.

  • what the hell are you talking about dseanmat? did you lose sight of the subject at hand? the broad brush strokes are most assuredly painted by those on the right. to use any segment of people as a hate wegde to vote for or against a candidate is appalling.

don't give me that love crap, that "love the sinner, hate the sin" shit. it's nothing but a veiled attempt to hide the fact you hate, and are allowed to do so while you hide behind the bible.

  • To believe that, you would first of all have to believe that only people of conservative faith backgrounds are ever guilty of bigotry. That it not only ignorant, and self-serving. It is also bigotry of the most obvious kind. I find it fascinating that you have made up your mind that I hate you, although you have never met me. Such a drastic and prejudiced assumption, based merely upon what you perceive to be my religious convictions (and you've even got those wrong) is pure bigotry.

  • hmm, are you telling me something most of america already knows dseanmat?

i can tell you one thing, most former republicans who've left that party did so cause they don't like the direction it's gone in & it isn't to the middle. to have to prove "christian" credentials before one runs's for office is the biggest laugh since barnes was born. to use gays as a weapon by these "christians" is disgusting. they aren't christian, they're bigots & it seems that's all that's left in that party.

  • Again, to label all Republicans as "bigots" (as you did in your last sentence) is genuinely bigoted. You talk about people leaving the Republican party... I wonder through what alchemy the Republicans control the White House, and the majority of state legislatures and governor's mansions? If a Republican is elected president yet again in November (as I am confident one will) would that mean that you need to rethink your positions? Or would it just mean that most people aren't as clever as you?

  • no, dseanmat (do you mean doormat?) i did not say republicans are bigots, i said "christians" are bigots. and to further clear up things, since you can't read nor comprehend english, i am not referring to christians either.

until you can read and comprehend english this conversation is OVER, idiot!

  • "They're bigots... That's all that's left in that party." Those are YOUR exact words. So you're not only an ignorant, intolerant bigot. You're a liar and a coward too. You don't even take ownership of your own dumb ideas. I can't say I blame you; I wouldn't want to be associated with your ideas either!

  • you stupid fuck, exactly whom am i referring to? please stop, and read each word of what i said. if you can't figure it out, you deserve to be in the bigoted "christian"repuiblican party cause you're fucking stupid!

  • Yet further evidence of your own bigotry, intolerance, poor communications skills, and stupidity. You aren't smart enough to discourse with me. When I present you with an idea which is superior to your own (which does not exactly require a great deal of effort) you come back with profanity, accusations, and lunacy. You remind me of that toy inflatable clown that never knows when he's been beaten, you punch his nose and down he goes, only to keep coming back for more! Not much sport in it.

  • The republican is not a christian party, they simply use the american "christian-family" agenda to push their own ideas and policies, if john mccain is elected itll be another blow for america on the world stage, and believe me after the last 8 years your country needs no more bad press, a large majority of the world detests your nation anyway (irrationally may I add, as judgement should not be passed on a nation due to their assenine leader).

  • Your view of the Republican party is simplistic, skewed, and bigoted. No party is a perfect "Christian" party (most Democrats favor infanticide). As for worldwide opinion about our politicians, as an American voter, that comment registers exactly zero with me. I do not care who will be the best public relations face for the world. I vote for the person whose positions best coincide with mine. Conservatives believe that private charity works better than government does, and they're quite right.

  • They only exist to make their own lives more comfortable (whether that be by rigging elections or starting illegal wars), and keep their extremely wealthy core voter base content in the fact that their bank balances wont be deflating anytime soon (although bush hasnt done a very good job with that either has he?) It surprises me greatly that after 8 years of utter idiocy how there is anything left of the republican parties "common-man" voter base.

  • even if this comment does not get 1 response, i need to respond to fred barnes. i think that people like barnes are instigators. they feel the need to rouse the passions of a religiously ignorant and bigoted mob. and all for the sake of power and some sort of self-serving satisfaction. i hope that people like barnes will one day choke on it.
