Hoewel hij in Nederland grotere hits heeft gehad, vond ik dit veruit z'n beste nummer.Heeft iets melancholisch maar ook iets krachtigs..Een klassieker!
@ies1212 You know she plays it on piano live, right? Lady Gaga is actually not bad. There's actually a lot of really awesome new stuff out there. As much as I love this sort of thing, I love a lot of other music, too. Limiting your taste simply because something's got electronics backing it up doesn't make you musically savvy. Quite the opposite, really. Electronic doesn't mean bad. Mind you, I hate auto-tune. But there's bound to be worth to at least one artist in every form of music.
Hello Steven, this is a real remarkable video. Being a young teenager at the time of its release...I never thought of the frightening one can have using a *motor vehicule* to transport himself to another place....Now I really understand it in 2010. Fantastic clip on this timeless, unforgettable song....Fantastic upload!!
1974 - on the MUMS label .. solo album had this and other good hits came from it. I have the original '45's of this, "Free Electric Band", and "I'm a Train".
This song just about sums up the part of late youth when one starts to think twice about ones own personal immortality whatever the risk. It just sticks and the verse about dying in the old folks home is the verse which totally ties the song up into total greatness rather than leaving it a mere drone of "I want to take risks and always survive," the message being that if you survive the risks you'll still be overwhelmed. A verse most songwriters would have overlooked. Briliant
Isn't technology great!!!! I have the 45 of this song, but no turntable right now. Being able to hear this again is great.
I don't remember this being pulled from the air...copywrite date of 1974. Croce's plane crashed in Sept of 75...I still picture the intersection i was in when the radio news came on.
Albert Hammond is one great songwriter that the general public never heard of.
I have been trying to find this song since it came out in 1974, when I was a freshman in high school...I absolutely love this song, and a good video, too. Albert Hammond is one hell of a songwriter, and why this did not do better when it came out I'll never know.
Nicely done video - amazing how many of us have looked for this song since its brief charting - it was pulled from the air shortly after Jim Croce died in a plane crash. I saw him perform it on Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, stuck with me ever since.
You have the timing correct, but this is from Albert Hammond's own website: " I don't Wanna Die In An Air Disaster seems to become a hit as well first, but is taken off the air after singer/songwriter Jim Croce's plane accident." Highest it rose was #81 in U.S., so perhaps it was less hit, and more great song with tragically poor timing. Thanks, though for getting me to dig into a favored subject!
One thing I have learned in life is that artists like to use excuses for songs that didn't become bigger hits. Wasn't promoted properly...bad timing....etc etc. In this case Albert's timing was a little off to write what he did. Sure, maybe some DJs were sensitive about playing the song the following year after Croce's death. But maybe some DJs played it because the subject matter and thoughts were on people's minds then. One never knows. Great song though.
My post below was supposed to be a response to AnalogLife further down and although I pressed the reply on his message, the text showed up here. YouTube still have some bugs.

I'm fifteen and right now, this is my favorite song.
And I pity no one else my age knows stuff like this...
This stuff is way better than anything lady gaga or ke$ha have ever made...

It's a song from a vinyl album The best of Albert Hammond which I bought in the seventies.
Pretty haunting stuff that plays with our inner fears.

Jim Croce died in 1973 and this song was a hit in 1974. Jim's tragic death had no impact on this song.
