I read that a horse's heart weighs an average of 8.5 pounds, and this magnificent creature's weighed 22. What a horse. I hope he's running through the clouds. Thanks for this.
Just saw the movie this weekend by chance with my wife, she is a fan & loves horses in general. I heard of secretariat of course by way of the news etc.., but didn't watch horse races. After seeing the movie & listening to my wifes accounts all i can say is WOW ! Big red was a bad motha' & one of a kind. I enjoy watching his classic racing clips . R I P buddy !
I went to see Secretariat at Claiborne Farm in the summer of 1989. He was 19 but he still looked magnificent. He posed for pictures for me and I still have them on my living room wall today. He was a very special animal. Love you Big Red..... Mountainbliss1
I did see him in person and somehow it makes me cry even harder...Janice Toronto Woodbine...He was a force to see going over that wire in the rain in October...I will never forget him...I have watched the movie 40 times and I still cry Watch the two parter Woodbine race Janice
Secretariat: Do you give the horse his strength, or clothe his neck with a flowing mane? Do you make him leap like a locust striking terror with his proud snorting? He paused fiercely rejoicing in his strength and charges into the fray. He laughs at fear and is afraid of nothing. He does not shy away from the sword The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground He can not stand still when the trumpet sounds...
MJ23 was great.but if you really want to seea human being at his "colt" stage, watch Herchel W. in his college days. Some of his runs were like Big Red"s...See the t.d. against South Carolina, 1980,three dbacks had the angle, then, like Red he hit another gear. But after all said n done THAT BIG RED WAS ;THE GREATEST;.
Groundbreaking, Earth-shaking, Secretariat was all that and more... He will always live in my memory as The Greatest of them All... And dude was gorgeous too!!
@bon1042 I hope, like you, that Barbaro & Secretariat are racing together with no laminitis agony to slow their Heavenly hooves. I had such high hopes for Barbaro, but we tragically lost him before he really showed what he was made of. Long live the memories of both these horses who touched the world outside of horse racing...
such a great tribute...i was 11 saw all his racing...just discovered internet...so happy to see all of the sites...but this has to be my fav...thank u sooo much..
@cuff1957 Risen Star and Lady's Secret were great horses...he never duplicated himself, but that would be impossible as there will never be another like him
@Iwastherein1969 correct... and as Penny Chenery said on S's website, "nature always regresses to the norm." That's the biological answer to the silly, male identified stallion fantasy of reproducing the male stud.
@bon1042 Penny Chenery was no expert on breeding horses....her father happened to own breeding share to Bold Ruler and won a coin toss with Ogden Phipps on which of the two would get two Bold Ruler offspring and the other would get the one....well, Phipps luck was bad and his mare never conceieved leaving Chenery with a colt and a filly out of Bold Ruler....the filly never amounted to anything but the colt turned out to be Secretariat...so no lectures needed on the history of Big Red
@Iwastherein1969 I was not lecturing... I think you're reacting to the last part of my comment. Sports Illustrated mocked Secretariat, literally, in print implying that he was a flop as a "stallion." Those are the reactions of men who saw him as a failure as a sire. And I was also happy to have Penny explain on S's website in answer to a question re. producing t'breds like himself... that "nature always regresses to the norm."
@bon1042 Secretariat's stallion legacy will first and foremost be with his daughters as broodmares....he produced some Blue Hen mares for sure.....secondly he will be remembered as a stallion for producing the very talented Risen Star...who, if had been allowed to race as an older horse would have been absolutely brilliant....Risen Star had the stamina of his dad and the early foot of his mare's side of the family.....Risen Star, again, if allowed to race at 4 would have records standing to now
@bon1042 cont. also I know the whole story of the Meadow, Chris Chenery, the family and how he developed his breeding operation. I've read Nack's bio twice and read portions all the time because I love his writing about Secretariat, along with other sources. Didn't mean to tweek your ego, which must be good sized given the "Iwas therein1969" moniker.
@Iwastherein1969 don't forget the wonderful Terlingua (she was Penny's favorite) as also good broodmare= Storm Cat! Have you seen 15 sec video here of him "displaying" and showing off in his paddock? Do you think Terlingua wld've raced more successfully if she hadn't bruised a leg (I think that was it)?
THANKS FOR GREAT POST!! As to Secretariat I HAD THE honor to see him HE WAS 10 BEAUTYFUL>POWERFUL>> AND SEEM TO KNOW THAT "YEP ITS REALLY ME"!! He came over i awe we petted him, took a few pictures..... he threw his head nudged back like a 3 year old-------- then BOOM HETOOK OFF ACROSS THE FIELD, IT ACTUALLY SCARED ME FOR A SECOND, THEN WE STOON AND WATCHED THE GREATEST HORSE EVER, SEEM TO ...JUST SHOW OFF! THE PLANE GETTING THERE COST A FEW DOLLARS, THE THRILL, WAS WORTH 1000X! BE WELL DON
@quiettman11 you really were lucky to have that experience with Secretariat. I at least wld like to go to Kentucky to visit his resting place at Claiborne and also visit Sham, at Walmac Farm I think.
I was devastated when he died. I was 10 years old and my dream had been to see him at Claiborne Farms. I carried my model horse of him with me everywhere and every time I see a picture of him, my breath is still taken away at how magnificent he was.
He was one in a billion. There will never be another. I was 13 when he won the Triple Crown and he was magic, sheer magic. I still get goose bumps and a tear in my eye.
I was 14 when Big Red died. That year I did a science report on his as the X factor. At the end of the presentation I played this video. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. An old classmate caught up with me on Facebook a few months ago and told me that video got him interested in racing and today he is still a huge fan. :D
Love it. Any collage of Secretariat should have not only the notable humans -- owner, trainer, jockey -- but also Sweat, his groom, and of course, Secretariat's favorite pony, Phil Silvers, the grey you always see being ridden along side of Secretariat on the way to any racing track.
Yes, I can surely agree with you on that one. There's another thing about Secretariat that just touches my heart. Not only was he an amazing race horse talent wise, but he was beautiful!!! I wasn't alive at this time, and had wondered what all the fuss about Secretariat was. Now I know.
I concur unless a descendant of his does it. The gene pool is bound to strike again one day! If so, I hope he looks just like his ancestor, The King, Secretariat!!!
Every single time I see one of his videos my throat gets tight and I cry - after all these years. I consider myself lucky that i got to see his races on TV.I know he is belly deep in green pasture because God wouldn't create such perfection to simply have it gone....
Secretariat is my OBSESSION....This God given horse is the only perfect creature anyone will ever see on this earth. His magnificence will never be matched again by any other horse or human. His magic will never be duplicated. That's why we all cheered and cried, at the same time, when he won the Belmont...the greatest moment in sports history...his perfection touched our hearts...and to this day, my biggest regret, is never seeing him in person. @cmf4321 Secretariat has become my obsession too. I watched the movie 12 times and cry each and every time. This is a beautiful tribute and song. It is wonderful to know there are people like you who share from their heart and soul so much love. My life has changed because of this beautiful horse. <3 Aloha from Hawaii
Anyone who watches the 1973 Belmont carefully and does not agree that it the best performance of the century, by any athlete, any sport, whatever,; then that person is not been honest with himself, i am one of those, why, cause i am human, but in all honesty nothing can come close to Secretariat Belmont, Seceretariat presented what perfection means that day, n did it effortlessly ...RIP, Secretariat,
100% agree!! No athlete, man or horse, in history can compare to the incomparable Secretariat:-) What he accomplished will never be matched! His record of 31 lengths and time of 2:24 both still stand 35 years later! And had never been accomplished by any other racehorse:-)
Big Brown's jockey said it best at the news conference: He suddenly realized what 'freaks' triple crown winners are.
It's been 30 yrs since we've seen one of those incredible freaks. Thanks to a smart jockey's decision, Big Brown might still have a future shot at Freakdom. Fifteen lenghts is pushing it a bit, though. LOL
You´re gone, but you will be always in our hearts! Forever and ever! I would have like to touch you, my friend, only for one time! I hope, you are going well now!
There will be... some day. But with racing now motivated by corporate investment return, too many potential greats get mismanaged. The sport will prolly have to return to its roots -- geniune love of the animal rather than lust for the dollar -- before you see another Secretariat.
Turcotte never even thought of the whip, in the 1973 Belmont. What was seen there was his natural ability...which only adds to his near-godlike mystique in the thoroughbred racing legendarium.
Yes; I agree completely. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to explore my project, in which I have tried to use music that is befitting this singularly fantastic horse. Feel free to drop by my channel anytime :)
two things, i will never take pleasure of the death of any animal big or small, never, and secondly you have got to stop calling me names, i have not call you any, n will not do so;
Two things: Pray tell us why you felt the need to write "dead at 19" and put it in quotes? 2nd thing: I have called you an idiot previously. I apologize for that. I should've said you were, and have been, acting IDIOTIC.
The day everyone was measuring him versus the Crown...he raised the Crown in the annals thoroughbred mythology. To this day, there is not a Triple Crown attempt where they will not harken back to that haunting footage, at 1:56.
The monument at Belmont commemorates the greatest moment of them all, when the far turn showed a creature leaving this mortal plane forever...without dying...and it was all many could do to simply break down and sob.
Look at him at 2:39, Eddie walking him w/blue blanket over his back. It's as if he sees man w/camera, Secretariat is holding his head high, ears pricked, looking rt at him. Get your best shot, sir, Here I Am!
Thank you Dingerz for this....I remember that sad day--I heard it before I left for work....the loss of THE BIGGEST Horse celebrity of many people's lives...He is sorely missed but I think that he probably was the figure waiting for Barbaro, Risen Star, and Lady's Secret when they all passed....RIP BIG RED....We still love you.
Just brilliant... thanks very much for the video on the greatest horse in my lifetime

The loss of a legend indeed. Sorely missed and greatly loved. What a stunningly beautiful creature.
I agree with you, the alternate version of Richard Marx's song is not very good at all. This version is MUCH better.
Thanks so much for posting this fine tribute to the #1 racehorse of all time...SECRETARIAT!
Have a great day.
