Far from perfect microphone. It either picks up too much sound or not at all. What follows is what happened at the rushes: microphone picked up all the sound and magnified it into racket, the sound got out of synch, and the dialogue! Yes, the girl had a sappy voice !

I might add that the film composiotion was primitive: all those colorfiul costumes -and everything is recorded in B & W...

Sound and picture on films now are still separate elements that have to sync up. Today, the 1st AD would say, "Roll sound!" Then the sound guy would say, "Speed!" when he was ready, then the (digital) clap board comes in and the director says, "Action!" Afterwards, the sound guy picks up the ambient sound of the stage or room to use in editing, so everyone on set must be dead silent to record a minute of "room tone."

Gosh, I love film-making. And I love this movie!

Used this very scene as coursework examples @ college. "What not to do with Mic Placement". There's more truth among the comedy than many realise since all the early "talkies" struggled with the new technology. Problems like these weren't uncommon...

Indeed, isn't the entire film grappling with artists miming and being dubbed over? Antics that happen everywhere even today. The film doesn't feel old because, frankly, it isn't!
