I was a drummer in this period, playing clubs and festivals for a living, and the black chick singer section was in vogue at the time. It was a musical growth for Marc. The 2 drummer thing was also in vogue...it was all about expanding the rock thing to new vistas. Bolan was a visionary imo.
A lot of the time, covers are useless; Rarely, though, they can be more than that, like a new interpretation, by someone who KNOWS the song, not just the lyrics. That's how I feel about Maki Asakawa's version of Chrome Star. The literary equivalent to it would be Jean Rhys' lush _Wide Sargasso Sea_.
I was really shocked when I discovered that T. Rex had a lot more quality work beyond Electric Warrior. I think more of this stuff really deserves to see the light of day.
@stevi1974 Yeah - I love both versions. I heard this way back when I was at Uni, and last year listeining to the Shaky box set I suddenly thjought - i know that , it sounds like Marc Bolan, and a check of the wrter credits confirmed it, so i searched and found this. Great memories.
Just one more little note look at eddy steels pics of Marc in the Zipgun period with Gloria Marc really looks very happy even though he knew he was on the slide Love Marc for everXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Tanx for all your comments. On the subject of Gloria's vocals, i think they are amazing and work very well with the sound Marc was creating at this period in time. Marc chose to include that sound and it was a sound he was striving to develop his own stamp on. I can accept some people dislike this kind of singing but i love it and Marc obviously loved it as he allowed it to be included.
Great Track! Bolan was amazing. Hey Actually Shakin Stevens done an awesome cover version of this and renamed it 'Come On Little Girl' and put it on a 7" b-side of 'True Love' 1988. Shaky will be performing it at the Bolan Tribute at Shepherds Bush in London this coming September!
At the time I hated Gloria for moving Bolan into the new sound, when I brought Zip Gun Boogie and played it for the first time I was so dissapointed and agree the screaching...... Thats when I left Marc I was so dissapointed but now I love this period including those bloody screechingGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGS Nice that Eddy has some other stuff fron the period
Zipgun period Marc in a new theme most dropped Bolan at this time now what a gas we all needed to move on with Marc (including me) and most of us did not. Marc was well ahead of us. Rock on Marc miss you will love you till I die what a dudeXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
Always loved this late period T.REX track. Goes on every compilation I make.
