I think a lot of people who don't think this film is scary sometimes don't really know the context of the film and the mythologies behind the demon. (This demon is not Satan. It is actually Pazuzu. He lies when he says he is the Devil) They also probably were not paying attention to the film because the typical American nowadays has a preposterously short attention span. This film is deeply complex, and in that complex story is the horror. Also people mainly expect gore nowadays as scary. :/

It's a bunch of gore and zombies eating each other. Back then, horror movies were less gorry and more suspensful and scary. Classic scary movies are good compared to modern ones.
