@supopobitchi yeah i was about to say cause i remeber watchin this video and i was like after hearing the thickening i went back to this vid and was like dude thats it!!!!!!! 1:40
Very nice playing :D dont get me wrong, I love Mastodon, but i was scared he was gonna play a bunch of metal riffs. Instead we were all given a very nice guitar piece, and people yell at him to play mastodon :I
I don't know how the rest of you feel, but I believe that when musicians go to NAMM, they play what they want to and show others their talents outside of their bands. The fans shouldn't make an artist play something they want to hear, but listen to what the artist wants to play.
I have a very similar guitar (a 2000 angus young sig) and it was pretty much unplayable until I moved the bridge. Complete and total lack of intonation. That and the lyre vibrola (whammy bar) on that guitar is just plain stupid to tune with....
holy crap he's playing from the Jonah Hex Ep. Yea that is definitely Clayton Boy for the intro... But then it seems like he switches over to Pendulous Skin for like the next minute..
Either way this man fucking beasts. Never did I think the banjo could be cool before I listened closely to this guy playing..
Is that chicken picking or is that modern jazz style (that's what I think it's called) picking? Aren't they both the same thing basically, except modern jazz uses scapel picking and finger picking? For some reason it looks like he's doing both at some points in this video.
I was thinking about learning the modern jazz style, because I already scapel pick. I'm not too familiar with chicken picking, but I know it is used for banjo playing, right?
Yeah, I figured out that hybrid picking is the same thing as the "modern jazz style". Hybrid picking is more correct, though. It's a tough style, but alot of the greats use it. I'll have to learn it after I master scalpel picking. Thanks for replying.
im sure several other people have already made this observation, but seriously. hes crazy underrated. all of mastodon is, as individual musicians and as a band. i think down the line theyre gonna be really appreciated, way more than they are right now. then all of us who like em already are gonna look like dicks even though we've liked em from the beginning *sigh* bleak!
@zeppelin8 I know one of the riffs he was playing is from the Jonah Hex EP that Mastodon made for the movie, the specific song I believe is Clayton Boys. Check it out, see if you agree.
Has anyone else noticed that the chords he uses in some parts of this jam, are also from the new Mastodon track "Clayton Boys" for the Jonah Hex soundtrack? Nice to see some thought transitioning and ideas being used later, being a musician myself it's funny how something you played before, can sometimes come back and be useful
probably cos he looked up and suddenly there was a whole crowd staring at him play...i mean at a gig he is prepared for the performance but here he doesnt know what to play to keep their attention so jsut dabbles. This happens to me a lot :S
it's probably the vibrola trem, which he's using quite a bit, that putting his tuning out of whack. It's almost impossible for anyone to keep those things in tune
i totally nearly met brent! he was walking down this roud but i only realised when he was sometime away! it was about a year ago. i fucking regret it so bad
i met him in 2006 when they were on the unholy alliance tour with log, slayer, and bodom. he was really nice and down to heart dude....but he kinda smelled. i think it was cause they just got done playing and he was sweaty and stuff, but it was funny. he looks homeless too. but seriously, an awesome dude and a awesome musician. troy sanders is fuckin nice as hell too.
LOL At first I didn't know who the guy was, and i saw how disheveled he looked, so i just assumed that a homeless guy just walked in and started playing an SG.
when they recorded the hunter brent probably looked back at this vid and was like were makin these riffs into a song
