  • when they recorded the hunter brent probably looked back at this vid and was like were makin these riffs into a song

  • its riffs of thickening!!!

  • @supopobitchi yeah i was about to say cause i remeber watchin this video and i was like after hearing the thickening i went back to this vid and was like dude thats it!!!!!!! 1:40

  • *Walks up* "HOLY FUCK ITS BRENT HINDS!!!!!!!

  • for god's sake tune the treble strings! <3

  • manden la tab de thickening cuando la saquen porfa.............

  • manden la tab de thickening cuando la saquen porfa.............

  • Its funny because from 1:41 to 2:18 he is playing some riffs from thickening from The Hunter. So he actually is playing mastodon...

  • @RubberChickenNetwork none of us that have seen the video when it was new would have known that that would end up on record lol

  • No offense, but he looks like a homeless guy playing on a street corner in this video.

not that its a bad thing. I would be amazed to see a homless guy playing on the streets like that.

  • wath song is 1:42

  • @jimbox229 The Thickening

  • tuneitman!

  • Very nice playing :D dont get me wrong, I love Mastodon, but i was scared he was gonna play a bunch of metal riffs. Instead we were all given a very nice guitar piece, and people yell at him to play mastodon :I

  • @MrISAACFACE half the stuff hes playing is mastodon buddy..

  • I don't know how the rest of you feel, but I believe that when musicians go to NAMM, they play what they want to and show others their talents outside of their bands. The fans shouldn't make an artist play something they want to hear, but listen to what the artist wants to play.

  • I have a very similar guitar (a 2000 angus young sig) and it was pretty much unplayable until I moved the bridge. Complete and total lack of intonation. That and the lyre vibrola (whammy bar) on that guitar is just plain stupid to tune with....

  • Its sounds awesome but because the guitar isnt proberly tuned it just cuts in your ear sometimes :/

  • Nice vid, thanks for sharing. Please keep 'em coming.

  • holy crap he's playing from the Jonah Hex Ep. Yea that is definitely Clayton Boy for the intro... But then it seems like he switches over to Pendulous Skin for like the next minute..

Either way this man fucking beasts. Never did I think the banjo could be cool before I listened closely to this guy playing..

  • The guitar sounds kina out of tune... or is he just pressing on the strings so hard? But I like it.

  • Is that chicken picking or is that modern jazz style (that's what I think it's called) picking? Aren't they both the same thing basically, except modern jazz uses scapel picking and finger picking? For some reason it looks like he's doing both at some points in this video.

I was thinking about learning the modern jazz style, because I already scapel pick. I'm not too familiar with chicken picking, but I know it is used for banjo playing, right?

  • @BigTymerPimp Its called hybrid picking brent uses it alot you play with the pick while finger picking at the same time

  • @CHICKMAGNET66666

Yeah, I figured out that hybrid picking is the same thing as the "modern jazz style". Hybrid picking is more correct, though. It's a tough style, but alot of the greats use it. I'll have to learn it after I master scalpel picking. Thanks for replying.

  • @BigTymerPimp He also plays banjo, which explains his picking technique.

  • man his playing is just inspirational...my guitar idol for sure.

  • im sure several other people have already made this observation, but seriously. hes crazy underrated. all of mastodon is, as individual musicians and as a band. i think down the line theyre gonna be really appreciated, way more than they are right now. then all of us who like em already are gonna look like dicks even though we've liked em from the beginning *sigh* bleak!

  • What songs are these?

  • @zeppelin8 I know one of the riffs he was playing is from the Jonah Hex EP that Mastodon made for the movie, the specific song I believe is Clayton Boys. Check it out, see if you agree.

  • Yeah this is "Clayton Boys" more or less. Everyone in the room should bow down. You should never be higher than the king himself.

  • THAT SONG AT 2:17

  • Melville NY? Herman Melville(born in NY)? author of Moby dick.. main concept of Leviathan.. I SEE A CONNECTION

    lolz

  • Has anyone else noticed that the chords he uses in some parts of this jam, are also from the new Mastodon track "Clayton Boys" for the Jonah Hex soundtrack? Nice to see some thought transitioning and ideas being used later, being a musician myself it's funny how something you played before, can sometimes come back and be useful

  • @Somethingsrandom oh yeah, man. 2:20 .... you are right!:)

  • is that the vos or the aged one?

  • hobo playing in the street.. ahah

  • he looks like a dirty old bum lol

  • really good. jimmy page like

  • "is Bill here yet?"

The way he says that (it's hard to describe what i mean) shows how much respect he has for Bill... He must love jammin' with him.

    Great guitar partnership.

  • Sounds like some of his "Fiend Without A Face" stuff.

  • you reakon he's playing in standard tuning ?

  • @AussieYobbo Highly doubt it man in mastodon their guitars are tuned down shitloads

  • Is that epiphone in the back (the amp)?

  • Some of the stuff he plays is so haunting... Its very neat to listen to.

  • Who cares what Brents wearing or if he doesnt look like everyone else their, hes unique a great guitar player, my favourite actually he fucin rocks

  • Poor guy...people egging him on to play Mastodon when that's probably the last thing he wants to play

  • @IAmRodyle i didn't hear any of that. people gave him plenty of respect

  • damn. i could listen to him jam all day

  • he is awsome, but he looks like a hobo.....

  • the venim jacket really adds to the look

  • more like an awesome METAL LUMBERJACK

  • Not hobo, angry redneck :)

  • you know.. because music is all about appearance.

  • yer i know its not, its just that its NAMM, he could scrub up a bit lol, but he is a very good guitarist

  • THE DIRTIER THE BETTER DAMN IT!

  • He used to play banjo, and he's playing in banjo tuning here. Sounds pretty good.

  • hope I can meet him someday

  • Brent rules, Gibson rules. OF COURSE

  • probably cos he looked up and suddenly there was a whole crowd staring at him play...i mean at a gig he is prepared for the performance but here he doesnt know what to play to keep their attention so jsut dabbles. This happens to me a lot :S

  • yeah especially in guitar stores, not to say that i get a crowd of people but even just sitting there with other people in the store it's wierd

  • He is probably unwashed :D

  • he probably doesnt care, and doesnt look to impress anyone

  • He is.

  • You know why i love this dude? He is so freakin original!!!!

  • Favorite current guitar player

  • it's probably the vibrola trem, which he's using quite a bit, that putting his tuning out of whack. It's almost impossible for anyone to keep those things in tune

  • i manage to, just use a well cut graphite nut and well stretched strings?

  • i totally nearly met brent! he was walking down this roud but i only realised when he was sometime away! it was about a year ago. i fucking regret it so bad

  • dude id be pissed

  • i met him in 2006 when they were on the unholy alliance tour with log, slayer, and bodom. he was really nice and down to heart dude....but he kinda smelled. i think it was cause they just got done playing and he was sweaty and stuff, but it was funny. he looks homeless too. but seriously, an awesome dude and a awesome musician. troy sanders is fuckin nice as hell too.

  • soooo mastodon...

  • its cool the way he starts finger picking the chords of the intro of Crack The Skye. pretty neat!

  • i love brent to death but would it have killed him to tune up!?

  • it might be the doubling of the same note

    like in pendulous skin

that clashes a bit - 5th fret of the B and open E

    never quite in

    but yer

    wait never mind

he tunes the damn thing at the end

serves me right for typing and watching

  • Brent is sick, this video = proof

  • LOL At first I didn't know who the guy was, and i saw how disheveled he looked, so i just assumed that a homeless guy just walked in and started playing an SG.

  • lol!

  • jep he looks kinda old but kick ass:D if he d be a homeless he would be like the coolest homeless ever. Favourite guitar player since a long time

  • pretty killer!

  • apparently no difference with a regular sg, isn't it?

  • think so, then again a huge chunk of guitars in general sound the same.......Gibson might assasinate me for saying that :s

  • I love how he always looks like a mess.
