I know they did this in the studio for the Kids Are Alright movie; didn't realize they actually used to play it live..... Moonie on the vocals...... he was a big surf music fan .......
I love the Who and adore Keith, RIP. This vid is weird as some of you have mentioned. Whoever the clueless idiot who said wannabe punks, please kill yourself. This unfortunately may be the best vocals I have heard from Moon. Thats not saying much. Some today think that he may have been tone deaf. Amazing considering his groundbreaking drumming. But if you listen to him sing, you cant discount the possibility. Great musical ability and no vocal ability? Just might have been tone deaf.
I have perfect pitch. Can tell you a note played on the piano without looking at it. Moon was not tone deaf. Sang both Barbara Ann on TKAA and Bucket T on key.
@MrGb1965, I have perfect pitch too (I don't think there's too many like us, apparently). I agree, Keith wasn't tone deaf, he just wasn't the most skilled of singers. However, in my experience, people can be taught. He could never have been a great singer, but he could have improved. I don't think he could have improved his drumming though - little genius!
actually thats not true. if youve seen amazing journey, they show him during the pictures of lily sessions doing a very high pitched version of the chorus.
and in the film the kids are alright the do babara ann as a session and his vocals, while not the best, are in tune
the picture is cool but the sound is really weird... no mics on the drums or on guitar and bass ! they're only picked up by room mics, sound very distant while you can perfectly hear the voices.
it's interesting anyway, cause it gives you an idea of how loud the bass was in the room !
yeah...the vocal mics are faintly picking up the backline amps and the acoustics of the room, since the singing is right at the mic the vocals are much louder
I've noticed lately the best sixties rock footage comes from non-English speaking European countries. They couldn't produce any decent bands but the T.V people knew enough to save the tapes.
With due respect despite the name, they were not a surf cover band, they may of did the odd beach boys song, but they certainly weren't a surf band, they did loads of stuff from the shadows, hits of the day!
the beach boys hit before beatles or any of these other great bands. the beach boys were EXTREMELY popular in the early sixties. imagine the fifties sound (yikes!), and then imagine hearing something as unique as the beach boys and/or jan & dean. it was different at that time, and it was BIG.
man, i just loooooooove Keith Moon, and evwerything about him .. lets just listen to him here, better than ever ... he wasnt much of a singer, but he did his best ... he is awesome!
he didn't fit any of the prototypes for attractive band members. It was all about marketing even then. Roger, Keith and Pete all had followings and marketability...poor John..."the Quiet One".
I love the surf tune but it was a 50s bebop tune before it was a beachboys tune and the rock break they put in that song KICKS ASS. as does my generation. my all time fav who song .
Let's give Keith a break.. He must have been rather young in this vid. I felt it was a bit mocking anyway as The Who was an early punk band and probably didn't care much for that fake surf crap anyway. If you want real surf, you need the likes of Dick Dale! I'm a Who's who as well as a Dick head, and proud of it!
moon was great,,but to people getting upset if someone says he was a bad singer,,,helooooooo!..be realistic he's aweful ...yet fun,,,,they didnt turn his mike off for nothing during shows..but they let him have his fun.
Did you just say Keith moon could be bad at drumming? Even when he passes out he's amazing, when hes sleeping he's amazing, he's even amazing now he's dead
lol - this is great - thanks for this! most americans bow to the beatles and yet it's funny how much a MAJOR influence THE BEACH BOYS were on the who, especially on john entwistle and keith moon. i love it when i see british rock bands give props to american bands like the beach boys. even sir paul mccartney is still in awe over pet sounds..
excellent rare clip, another i'v never seen before, just a shame the base and drums wern't balanced with the vocals on my generation. what i wouldn't give to have been in the audience!!!!
Fabulous -- another rare clip I've never seen. It's *so* mid-60s but my GOD they were freaking *inventing* punk rock back then. Moon was just out of control and for Pete and John they must have been just hanging on for dear life trying to stay together and on tempo. Pretty wild and I'm sure audiences of the times were going "Woah!!!" when they started thrashing instruments. Gotta love it -- shocking the French :-)
While the Beach Boys were not the first to record it, it is the one that everyone remembers and the only version to go to #1 in America and went to #3 in Britain. The Who here are singing the Beach Boys version as they, like the Beach Boys get the middle bit mixed up.
Moon was a big fan of the beach boy's.Thats part of the reason he had a house in malibu CA,He loved the beach and being around the beach boys, good friends with brian wilson major parties at a Moons house. This drove his neighbor crazy back then Steve Mcqueen he did not like moon.
Keith was such a Beach Boys fan. I think that somebody said that if the Beach Boys had asked to join in the early 70s, he would've been gone. Great footage , thanks a million for posting this. What a great unique band.
I thought I'd seen all old Who footage - I was wrong. I love the JTM 45/100 Marshall stacks. Townshend/Entwistle and in a way, Moon, were the catalysts for the stack amplifier set up. The Who were about volume from the beginning. I don't think people realize the impact of the Who on things such as PA equipment, amps, drums, etc
Good find needs to be on google videos this is so damn rare them doing "Barbara Ann" live, I mean wow need to find more live versions of rare studio songs like "Relax" or "Silas Stingy":)

Because the version of "the kids are alright" has a much better sound quality and you can actually hear Keith Moon's drumming. Plus you can hear John Entwistle growling along in an almost inhumane low pitch which adds to the hillarity.
