The night of the Zeppelin reunion, Atlantic anniversary in 88 on HBO, lots of acts. This was Otis Redding's band w/Steve Cropper & Duck Dunn.
I almost fell off my chair when he announced Paul Rodgers to do Otis' signature tune. Rodgers' 1st gig since dissolution of the Firm. He nailed it. Even threw in Bad Co reference about sitting in the "morning sun".
As he left the stage, Cropper, who knew better than any, said Otis would've been proud of Rodger's performance.
Yes, this is awesome, but to call this the Blues Brothers Band is about like calling Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses or even calling this band, the World's Most Dangerous Band or the CBS Orchestra. Just because some of the members are the same, doesn't make it the same band.
Paul Rodgers is essentially a Tenor voice whereas Otis was a Baritone so maybe this song would be better performed in a slightly different key althogh tis is only a minor quibble cause lets be honest, its Paul Rodgers who is just the best Blues/ Rock singer, after Frankie Miller, this Isle has ever produced in my humble opinion, but all is open to discusion and taste of course.
@godhelpme2009 Rodgers for some reason held back on most of this song and then started singing off-key at about 2:20 before trying to go up the scale during the chorus. Must have been an off night for him because he usually is spot on if you look at his videos on youtube.
@coolhandluke621 Starting @ 2.31 he just didn't hit it right like he does in other performances. I'm not saying he butchered it because it's still above average. I'm stating it wasn't up to his normal standards like his live performances on Simple Man, Good Lovin Gone Bad and other songs.
hEARD HIM BEING CALLED THE WHITE OTIS ,VERY LUCKY TO HAVE THIS STUFF ON HERE ,BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO,S POSTING RODGERS COVERS ECT ,STUFF ID NOT HEARD ,THANKS AGAIN.
i agree why is it that tenor singers try to sing this song it sounds much better with a baritone voice just like Otis i mean hes a great singer but i just dont feel that soul
"I like Paul Rogers, but to call him the best blues singer of all time or better than Otis tells me that whoever says that has NO idea what they're talking about. "
I have some idea what I'm talking about. Paul is more than a blues singer. Otis was a seminal soul/gospel/blues singer of his era, who wasn't even the best. Sam Cooke held that title. Paul could do Otis justice. I'm not convinced Otis could do Paul's catalogue justice, and its a formidable one. They're both great, though.
I have to agree with senator. Otis was phenomenal, and on this song he was clearly the best, but overall I have to say Paul Rodgers is probably the better singer.
i dont think its right to say whos best and whos not,, everyone has a different style and varying degrees of talent and everyones taste is different, i personally think paul is the best rock and blues singer of all time but i love lots of other singers too, especially the oldies, otis, jimi hendrix, marvin gaye etc, i think its ok to like whoever you want!!!:-)
I like Paul Rogers, but to call him the best blues singer of all time or better than Otis tells me that whoever says that has NO idea what they're talking about.
Paul Rodgers is one of rock's great vocalists, no doubt about that, but, to my ears, he's become too much of a "crooner" as of late. I'd like to see him back in a more looser blues/rock format ala Free.
I live in NY and I play guitar. Back in 1996 I was listing my car in classifieds. Guy calls me and comes over to look at my car with his 16 year old son. I couldn't figure out who he was cause he looked familiar. After asking-pleading -with him he told me who he was- "Late Night" he said. "With David Letterman?" I asked. "yeah". "Oh your the guitar player from late night!" I nearly freaked! I couldnt believe it. Well he bought the car from me for his son and BTW his name was Sid McGuinness!
Gooooooosebumps!!!!!

P.S. This is also not Booker T. and the MG's.

PR held back on this some, he is capable of more. Paul Rodger's has stated in several interview's Otis Redding was his biggest influence as a singer.
