what makes me laugh is when he says the focus rs is dreadfull on the roads. Yes the diff does send you all over when floored in 1st on an extremely bumpy road but the rest of the time its fine, also its very good at cruising on the motorway mine is reving at around 3k revs at 80mph and is very quiet. A type R at similar speed is at 4k revs and much louder inside.
Id rather have a car thats faster and quiet when not in the mood than a car which makes lots of noise all the time and hard work!
WTF dismissing the Clio just because it doesn't have ABS? ABS is stupid. And if just because of that you'll dismiss a car, then you should dismiss all of them for being front wheel drive, which is rubbish to start with.
Want a hot hatch? Chevette HSR. Proper RWD car. Ford Escort Cosworth. Proper AWD car. Renault Clio V6, and to be fair with the FWD folks, Golf mk1 GTi.

I personally think the Leon 225 is the best car all-round becuase you can never grow to old for it, while your young - its fast, looks fab and gets you a g/f, when you become a mum or dad - it has 4-doors. and has a spacious boot for everyday shopping. ok civic TRs argueably fastest but only creeps past a Seat CR225.
I agree new Leons are a bit of a turn-off for me (reminds me of a megane scenic or vauxhall meriva) I prefer the old shape which looks more like a proper car rather than a mini-MPV. Civics are legend though, but do lack being practical.
And what about the old Toledo and the new Toledo, they screwed big time, I don't get it, when they become the VW Alfas they transform all the cars into ugly MPVs?.
The new Civic on the other hand is a fantastic looking car.
God the New Toledo looks The ugliest Ive seen so far! There is a war between manufacturers these days as to who can make the most spacious/safest rated car built on smallest platform. Thats where the market is pointing, result? They end up rather ugly. I liked the good old days when Larger cars felt Small and cosy. Not so wide that you can't open your doors without bashing another car!
Well, if that is the phylosophy nowadays, manufacturers should look at the sale figures of the new Toledo, it has been a disaster for Seat. I agree, cars have been growing too much, adding length and width every new model. Look at the new Mondeo, it is huge!, much better looking than the Toledo though :-)
My dad bought one of the few Cossies delivered to holland when i was a kid. And nowadays... He still waxes the cossie every month, is in mint condition, and only drives it on special occasions.
He is/was a racing driver, but he has a tedency to like oversteer and reving all the way up. Not the choise for a FWD torque turbo engined car. Unfortunately most people over rev turbo cars...
If that had been the Leon Cupra R what would the outcome have been? The Cupra R is much better than the standard Cupra. The R was developed with Seat's racing team and is a different beast. 225bhp, 200lb ft of torque, better suspension set-up, a new lighter and stronger sub frame as well, and lots of other little tweeks too. a very underrated car in my opinion.
The Leon is the only car you can fit the family in with 5 doors and still looks good and goes like stink!!
The RS is a pure sports car and the civic is fine until you drive it more than 100 miles in a stint!.
Also theres no mention of the massively different prices when it comes to the top 3 and the bottom 3. Also check out the second hand values Leon would come our tops every time.

Just been reading back on these comments and its a waste of time to say "stick a turbo on the civic and it'll kick ass!!" because this is a race between two factory standard cars, which the focus won. Unsurprisingly the RS can also be modded extensively, being that its a turbo charged as standard as well as a limited 'sport' edition many performance part companies offer upgrades which lead to the 400+ BHP cars which are plastered on the owner sites and at mod'd shows.

Your s2000 is about three times the price of your average Ford Focus and obviously much quicker if you don't mind having great big chunks of your head removed from the support structure in the roof every time you turn a corner or hit a bump - that is unless you're only 5 feet tall.
Funny, I'm 6' tall and track my s2000 all the time and have never had my helmet touch the bars let alone my head during city driving. I guess all S2000 drivers are 5' tall according to you!

He is/was a racing driver, but he has a tedency to like oversteer and reving all the way up. Not the choise for a FWD torque turbo engined car. Unfortunately most people over rev turbo cars...

If that had been the Leon Cupra R what would the outcome have been? The Cupra R is much better than the standard Cupra. The R was developed with Seat's racing team and is a different beast. 225bhp, 200lb ft of torque, better suspension set-up, a new lighter and stronger sub frame as well, and lots of other little tweeks too. a very underrated car in my opinion.

The one in the video was a Cupra R. I'm rather fond of them myself, I reckon they look a hell of a lot better than the newer Leon.

The Leon is the only car you can fit the family in with 5 doors and still looks good and goes like stink!!
The RS is a pure sports car and the civic is fine until you drive it more than 100 miles in a stint!.
Also theres no mention of the massively different prices when it comes to the top 3 and the bottom 3. Also check out the second hand values Leon would come our tops every time.

Hmm strange driving there from Tiff, the Focus RS is a much more of a drivers car than a CTR ... guess he forgot he drives a turbocharged engine, he kept hiting the rev limiter in Focus RS.
I must say that was one bad driving there from Tiff, the car is much diferent to drive as it was presented from him.
And BTW Focus RS was 4,3s faster than CTR on Top Gear track ;-)
Still I like them both, just like the looks of Focus RS more.

Just been reading back on these comments and its a waste of time to say "stick a turbo on the civic and it'll kick ass!!" because this is a race between two factory standard cars, which the focus won. Unsurprisingly the RS can also be modded extensively, being that its a turbo charged as standard as well as a limited 'sport' edition many performance part companies offer upgrades which lead to the 400+ BHP cars which are plastered on the owner sites and at mod'd shows.

As Top Gear (the other show!) tested: the new one is slower, understeers like hell and is less crisp to drive. To bad as the newer engine is improved in the lower mid rpm range...

I agree...Ford is complete crap. Honda dominates the scene here. i had a 03 civic Si and i never had a problem with it ever. The ford winds by .03 of a sec and its boosted...if you think this is a win for Ford your a idiot.

mate civic own u are talking about a naturally aspirated engine against a turbo and the there was only a .3 second difference which is wat like a wheel length stick a bolt on turbo kit in that civic and focus is gone

not the same class of car is it. Your s2000 is about three times the price of your average Ford Focus and obviously much quicker if you don't mind having great big chunks of your head removed from the support structure in the roof every time you turn a corner or hit a bump - that is unless you're only 5 feet tall.

Funny, I'm 6' tall and track my s2000 all the time and have never had my helmet touch the bars let alone my head during city driving. I guess all S2000 drivers are 5' tall according to you!

what are you guys talking about, the focus needed a turbo to get just .3 seconds faster then civic. put a turbo on that type r motor and see how well it preforms. the focus is just another pos ford.

That would mean spending an extra 5000 dollar? Spend 5000 dollar extra on the VW or Ford and you have over 300 bhp easily, probably the same as the Honda would do for the same amount of money? A non turbo car will always have lower power and torque in the end... So the Honda needs the turbo! And that's not how Honda sees the Type-R's !unfortunately!)!

Love the Focus. Especially the RS. I really want one. Despite the fact the guy really couldn't drive either of the cars dragging the tires in the dirt in the turns...but meh. And he complaining about a rough ride, well hell, the car is pretty much built for racing and he stated, but hell. I would take one any day
