Um... have you ever seen horses on sand? Have you looked at what the sand looks like after horses have gone by? Remember that horses do not have toes; when they trot or gallop, the hoof will make a divot in the sand at the forward-end of the track, and some sand will be thrown backwards.

A human walking on his or her toes, the raised area behind the "heel" is where it's toes pushed off. The area that's pushed up shows the surface of the sand fractured by sand being shoved under the crust by the back part of the fore foot.

This gal is sure making up quite a tall tale from these sand prints!

Perhaps the sand was hot so they ran on their toes.

check out English phenomenon "devil's footprints"~

I grew up in rural West Virginia along the Ohio River (Parkersburg area) and in 1981 or so (can't recall exact time but I was ~12 years of age) there were similar tracks leading from near our house all the way up through yards and fields and garden and then forest, one track in front of the other, similar to what you're describing~ Hope we can find out what it is. Consider reading Vallee "Passport to Magonia" (faeries, etc)
