Actually, the soldier's the narrator of the story/song. There was once a wife who loved violets, and stayed back in her home village waiting for her solider of a husband to return from war. However, when he returned she was already dead during --what I assume and I could be wrong--fire raid. I'm sure it's fire, but not entirely sure if it's about a raid or actual explosion. So the husband is standing on some mountaintop surrounded by violets, mourning the death of his poor wife.

The song never specified. The real story behind this song is from a poem. I'd tell you, but I don't have the DVD which explained it better. If your parents have Asia's Le Minh Bang DVD, then skip to the "Chuyen Hoa Sim/Chuyen Tinh Hoa Trang" where 4 people sing together. But don't quote me on it, lol.

The poem was written by a North Vietnamese army magazine journalist in the 50's to moan his wife.

He was her teacher at one point when she was only 8+. Later he then decided to join the army. The day he went away, the little girl saw him off on the village road where all the purple flowers grew. Yrs later he came back to the village to visit her family on a 2 week leave. They got married in a simple wedding ceremony (she told him she didn't need a wedding dress, love was all she needed).

2 weeks later he went back to the army and 3 months later he received the news that she drowned in a river while washing the clothes. The place she died still have a lot of purple flowers. She was only 17 when she died.

The author of the poem is still alive. Ironically, he doesn't like any of the songs written based on his story.The only thing he had left about her is the vase, used during their wedding, and then at her grave. He used to have a picture of her but it was taken away in a flood.
