  • This was a very helpful video. I was online looking for spey hackles to purchase. This will save me time, effort, and money. I already have goose shoulder and have never used them for tying -Perfect!

  • I think I can handle this one. First, there is no such thing as a Spey Rod. There are Spey casts that are preformed with a two handed rod of a length of 11'6" up to as much as 20' long. Most Two hand Rods are then called Salmon Rods. Two hand rods of 10' to 11' are called Switch Rods. They perform switch casts as well as many other two hand casting styles. They can also be use with one hand. A rod with one grip in a length of 6' to 10' 6" is called a Fly Rod.

    Hope this makes sense.

  • Hi I was woundering what's the difference between a fly rod and a Spey rod ( if any )

  • Great instructions. Followed them to the tee and feathers came out beautifully.

Now need a video for splitting. I split the stems down the middle but the bases are too thick to wrap. Do you re-wet them before tying or do you trim down the stem some more with a razor blade or is it possible to strip off the barbs without detaching from the stem?

  • @lemonthead

The best thing to do is select the feathers that have the thinest quill section before burning. Also choose feathers that are longer in size and then don't use the quill area. Use the stem after splitting. Once you get the hang of splitting you will find that they will be easier to do. Keep at it, you will find what tools will work. Flies that require more than a few wraps must be tied with more expensive feathers. This is a cheep alternative to Blue Eared Pheasant and Heron.

  • Hi

Great vids This one is great. I was wondering do you do any dying of feathers?

I am thinking about trying to by some.

    Chance

  • Chance, I have only done a very little bit of dying some Arctic Fox. I am going to try tip dying Marabou very soon. Steelhead season is not far off now.

  • what feathers did you use on the video?

  • I used Goose Shoulders the same as can be used for Spey Fly Wings and Dyed Bronze Mallard.

  • Awesome tutorial!
