@Driftuner I'm pleased to hear how you prefer the Miata to the GT-R. I signed up for a program called World Class Driving, where I got to drive a Gallardo Superleggera, SLR McLaren, 599 GTB, R8 V10 and Continental Supersports. The most fun car I drove that weekend was my 95' Miata. The supercars were just too composed even at the 100+ mph speeds I was driving, and the flappy paddle gearboxes were jerky and uncomfortable.

@Driftuner I agree I own a 2004 Cooper S I get a lot of stick for it being a "hairdressers" car , in reality its got a pokey engine that has power anywhere on the rev range and its great fun to drive.
@upakgalang10 cant really compare..but if u are talking about the 4 cylinder 200hp Genesis..then i would stick to the mx-5...the genesis is too big and heavy for that engine..of course its still fast, its still has 200hp..but i dont think that the combo will work and feel as good as the mx-5...now if ur talking about the V6..well then u cant really compare both...

Today was tue first day i was allowed to drive it without me dad and with my best friend and i had an amazingly fun time! I am a dude, and i can tell you that it weither its big or not doesnt matter. I own a 370z, but before buying it I had a huge consideration in buying the Mazda Mx5. It is not a gay car or a "not real sports coupe car", it's a beautiful beautiful car all in it's own. Some say it has low power, but I driven both the 370z and Mx5, and It's a given that the 370 will have more power feel, but man was the Mx5 so enjoyable, the power of the car is just right for the weight ratio, perfect for daily cruise.
I fell in love with this little car and traded in my SUV for an 06 MX 5 GT and having a blast with it. Now I take the long way home from work sometimes. This dude is right, its a driver's car, pure and simple, everything you need, nothing you dont.
the MX5 really is a great car. The big block only dudes will think what they will, but have them follow you to some twisty roads and see what they say after.

Totally agree, I live in New Zealand and I've owned two MX5's. Got my first one aged 18, and my second one aged 25, both modified, and both amazing cars. Nothing like watching the frustrated faces of drivers in Big V8s as they can't shake you off their tail. Awesome cars.
I can see that most cars in this segment are labelled as gay but I think a Mercedes SLK is more gay than an MX-5. I've got big respect for the Miata though I don't have any plans of owning one. It's not much but I think It's right up there with the Porsche 911.

Car and Driver named it the 3rd best driver's car. 1st was a Porsche and 2nd an Audi R8. It beat the Mustang GT500, Camaro SS, and Corvette ZR1 among others.

It's good to see you recommending the MX-5 to people as their first car. I think they are great cars. I was going to get 1 but I bought an RX-7 instead simply because the price difference here in Ireland was the same for the FD as the MX-5.
However I want my g/f to get an MX-5 because I think it will make her a good driver and enjoy driving (she gets nervous in the car), but also cause I'd like to drive it from time to time for the fun factor.

I owned a first gen miata and he is correct. The car does handle very well. It's only down fall is not having a V8 optional engine for it. Thank GOD for aftermarket companies that produce such things.

Larger trucks rounding those corners have no choice but to come into YOUR lane.Thats a straight drop down to the river too with only that little retaining wall to hold you back.A beautiful view for sure but you don't wanna make it the last one you ever see! Sorry to tell you this but that AIN'T Bear Mt., not even close. Bear Mt is a good 6 miles south down Rt 9W from this.You drove over the infamous Rt 218 from Cornwall NY to the rear gate of West Point (US Military Academy).That 'pull over' you stopped at, with all the graffiti, is known as 'High Point'. I drove this at 5am one morning in a Porsche, pedal to the medal when I could and lived to tell about it!

@killertoad Most people, myself included, wouldn't recommend it. You buy a sports car so that you can be involved in the driving experience, and an automatic takes a lot of that away. You'll also have less power, use more fuel and not have as much control over the car. Just my two cents. :-)
I'm 16 and i'm about to buy my first car. The reason im getting a Galant rather then a Miata is because of how small a miata is. In florida 95% of teens get into fender benders, and with a car the size of a toddler's shoe, its really dangerous. My parents would never allow me such a car.
Its not a dangerous car. You are much less likely to be injured or killed in an MX5 because you are much less likely to be in a crash in the first place in one. If you are re-signed to be in a crash just because "95% of teens are involved in crashes", then you should go on EBAY and buy an old US ARMY M60 tank (or an Escalade, same thing). But, if you want to use your brains, senses, and driving skill to AVOID being in a crash in the first place, the MX5 is the safest car in the world.
i took his advice and gotta say i love it. my dad has a ford focus which btw is a amazingly good car to drive and it handles great but there is something bout the miata that you could be having a horrible day and as soon as you go to drive everything get's fun again especially if it's just a lil slick because you can slide around as much as you want and have fun

I have one of these and it is a bloody sensational car to drive, it just connects you with it. It is not too fast but fast enough and all the other things come together so well in this car. Mine is a keeper, think I'll start collecting. I have another car to drive as a daily and enjoy the MX5 on special occasions. LOVE THIS CAR!

Yeah its a GREAT car to get as your first but the thing is, when you're 16, not everyone has cars or even their licenses so you're constantly driving people around. That's why the Miata is not the best idea for a first car.

My buddy is an engineer currently working at Ford and he owns Camaros among other things and his most recent car is a redone 2001 Miata and he says it’s the best car he have ever owned. A lot of guys say it is a chick car but I have never actually seen a woman driving it when I think about it... like never... always men, so I wouldn't worry about that (no offense to the ladies, but apparently most men don't like the idea of driving a car labeled as a chick car so there you have it.)

Nothing to be confused about. These are two very different cars. A Honda Civic Si would fall under the category of a "sporty compact car". They are the same platform line of cars like the Hyundai Tiburon, Toyota Celica or the Mazda Speed 3. The Mazda Miata, on the other hand is a "Roadster" which was inspired by and designed along the lines of a British MG, Alfa Romeo Spider and some will even call it a "poor man's Porsche Boxster". These are usually a 2 seater w/ ragtop convertibles

@sophiehottie Sophie, putting aside the sports and performance aspect of both cars, you have to consider 2 major pros for each car. The MX5 is a convertible, the Si is not, the Si can seat 4 other people, the MX5 can not. So also definitely think about that too! Good luck :-)
I wish I had money to buy a 94' MX5 and then a turbo kit. They're just so bloody great cars an with the turbo you have that little extra power that helps on straight's. I hope I win the lottery tonight! :)

The single best way to know if someone knows anything about cars is to ask 'em what they think of the Miata. Seriously, try it. If they say "chick car", they simply haven't a clue about driving or what the criteria of a brilliant drivers' car is.
Damn good track cars too. Non-staggered tires, easy brake pad changes, bulletproof drivetrains.... I see a lot of people who can afford Porsches driving MX5s at the track. They work.
Mazda would have a slamdunk if they just made a Miata hardtop, but not called Miata, and styled it aggressively. They can carryover all of the internals.

The S2K is just as fun and maybe a bit more in some cases but the MX-5 is by far a better daily driver.
People who say the MX-5 is gay don't know WTF they're talking about. The new / 09+ NC MX-5 is easily the best car to drive south of 45-50K.
For ~ 31K Max out it's a steal of a car. The 370z for example is much quicker sure but sucks where it matters as a drivers car.

@Spoonher41 go over the GW bridge and take the Palisades Parkway north to Bear Mountain. All the roads through the park and around the Bear Mtn bridge area are awesome.

I am 6 foot 6 and weight 200lbs , test drove one yesterday. Instantly fell in love with the car. I fit perfectly. I believe it was because my seam is only 32 to 34". Im tall from the waist up.

It's good to see you recommending the MX-5 to people as their first car. I think they are great cars. I was going to get 1 but I bought an RX-7 instead simply because the price difference here in Ireland was the same for the FD as the MX-5.
However I want my g/f to get an MX-5 because I think it will make her a good driver and enjoy driving (she gets nervous in the car), but also cause I'd like to drive it from time to time for the fun factor.

I have a Dodge Charger as my primary vehicle to do the heavy work. The MX5 is my second car and I LOVE it.
Ive had Mustangs, GTI's, Explorers, Mercedes, Hondas, 3 series BMW's, even a Boxster in my life. All great cars. But the MX5 is one of the nicest cars ever made.

I owned a first gen miata and he is correct. The car does handle very well. It's only down fall is not having a V8 optional engine for it. Thank GOD for aftermarket companies that produce such things.

And, worry wart that I am now in my old age, let me forewarn anyone thinking about taking that ride 'sports car' like better think twice. Larger trucks rounding those corners have no choice but to come into YOUR lane.Thats a straight drop down to the river too with only that little retaining wall to hold you back.A beautiful view for sure but you don't wanna make it the last one you ever see! Sorry to step all over your vid bud, but just a word to the wise.Oh, and rock slides are frequent too.

No doubt this is where you thought you were. Bear Mt is just off to the left side (south) of the Bear Mt. bridge, This is riding along Rt 9D on the east side of the river from the near Peekskill heading to the Bear Mt (bridge) and is known as 'The Goat Trail'. .It does looks similar:

Sorry to tell you this but that AIN'T Bear Mt., not even close. Bear Mt is a good 6 miles south down Rt 9W from this.You drove over the infamous Rt 218 from Cornwall NY to the rear gate of West Point (US Military Academy).That 'pull over' you stopped at, with all the graffiti, is known as 'High Point'. I drove this at 5am one morning in a Porsche, pedal to the medal when I could and lived to tell about it!
I have pictures from the 70s of us partying right behind where you're standing.

@killertoad Most people, myself included, wouldn't recommend it. You buy a sports car so that you can be involved in the driving experience, and an automatic takes a lot of that away. You'll also have less power, use more fuel and not have as much control over the car. Just my two cents. :-)

I'm 16 and i'm about to buy my first car. The reason im getting a Galant rather then a Miata is because of how small a miata is. In florida 95% of teens get into fender benders, and with a car the size of a toddler's shoe, its really dangerous. My parents would never allow me such a car.

Its not a dangerous car. You are much less likely to be injured or killed in an MX5 because you are much less likely to be in a crash in the first place in one. If you are re-signed to be in a crash just because "95% of teens are involved in crashes", then you should go on EBAY and buy an old US ARMY M60 tank (or an Escalade, same thing). But, if you want to use your brains, senses, and driving skill to AVOID being in a crash in the first place, the MX5 is the safest car in the world.

i took his advice and gotta say i love it. my dad has a ford focus which btw is a amazingly good car to drive and it handles great but there is something bout the miata that you could be having a horrible day and as soon as you go to drive everything get's fun again especially if it's just a lil slick because you can slide around as much as you want and have fun

I have one of these and it is a bloody sensational car to drive, it just connects you with it. It is not too fast but fast enough and all the other things come together so well in this car. Mine is a keeper, think I'll start collecting. I have another car to drive as a daily and enjoy the MX5 on special occasions. LOVE THIS CAR!

Yeah its a GREAT car to get as your first but the thing is, when you're 16, not everyone has cars or even their licenses so you're constantly driving people around. That's why the Miata is not the best idea for a first car.
If it wasn't for that (and the fact that since people drive them twice a year where I live so they sell them for 15k 10 years later...) I would've totally bought one instead of my 88 Civic Hatch

My buddy is an engineer currently working at Ford and he owns Camaros among other things and his most recent car is a redone 2001 Miata and he says it’s the best car he have ever owned. A lot of guys say it is a chick car but I have never actually seen a woman driving it when I think about it... like never... always men, so I wouldn't worry about that (no offense to the ladies, but apparently most men don't like the idea of driving a car labeled as a chick car so there you have it.)

Nothing to be confused about. These are two very different cars. A Honda Civic Si would fall under the category of a "sporty compact car". They are the same platform line of cars like the Hyundai Tiburon, Toyota Celica or the Mazda Speed 3. The Mazda Miata, on the other hand is a "Roadster" which was inspired by and designed along the lines of a British MG, Alfa Romeo Spider and some will even call it a "poor man's Porsche Boxster". These are usually a 2 seater w/ ragtop convertibles

@sophiehottie Sophie, putting aside the sports and performance aspect of both cars, you have to consider 2 major pros for each car. The MX5 is a convertible, the Si is not, the Si can seat 4 other people, the MX5 can not. So also definitely think about that too! Good luck :-)

The single best way to know if someone knows anything about cars is to ask 'em what they think of the Miata. Seriously, try it. If they say "chick car", they simply haven't a clue about driving or what the criteria of a brilliant drivers' car is.
Damn good track cars too. Non-staggered tires, easy brake pad changes, bulletproof drivetrains.... I see a lot of people who can afford Porsches driving MX5s at the track. They work.

Back before I ever thought about the Miata, I was so crazy over British/Italian/German sports roadsters of the 50's and 60's, but finding one in good running condition for a good price was next-to-impossible.
I guess one day it just hit me.....the Miata (hahah)
The thought of it being a "gay car" never fazed me. People who call it a "gay man's car" aren't car people at all.
I now own a '97 Miata with almost 200,000 miles and it's running strong without any problems!

matt... i know you don't like giving away the names/locations of these roads because you don't want traffic, but now you're in california. please man, i'm living in new jersey with boring-ass roads (the best are in colts neck and holmdel, but are filled with rich wives in escalades going 30 mph) and i don't mind taking a drive to new york to drive on that road...
