SPF 30 blocks 96.7% of UVB energy, SPF 45 blocks 97.5% of UVB energy and SPF 70 blocks 98.6% of UVB energy. There is very little benefit in using any sunscreen products with an SPF greater than 30. The higher the SPF, the thicker the lotion. You should also reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours. I'm a pharmacist & I thought I'd share this info. Lots of people think the higher the SPF the better it is at blocking the harmful UV rays but really anything over SPF 30 is not giving more benefit.

Nice and informative video! Something new to know, because in Europe we have absolutely different standards of sunscreens (I mean the numbers). I do not know what it is in the USA like, but in the EU you can buy a quality sunscreen only in a pharmacy for a high price and these sunscreens are mostly made in Switzerland, but on the other hand they are really worth to buy!

Aaron, you almost always have skin a little darker than mine and I rarely use anything. Are you mostly trying to speak to people with fair skin? I'm in Phoenix now and at most I'll use an SPF 15 if I haven't been out in a while. I rarely get even a little bit pink and when I do it's usually gone by bedtime. But the rest of my family has really light skin so they use the SPF 50 every time they are in the sun.

@NAPTOWNLOS15 Yes it will. It may take several weeks before the skin will renew it self completely but it'll happen. The think you have to worry about is that a serious sunburn (or tan) can make your skin look older in younger age and can increase the possibility of skin cancer.

I mow my lawn for hrs every week and use the Banana Boat SPF 50 Sport Spray that you had in your hand, That stuff works amazing, The waterproof part is mainly for people like me who sweat alot. Even though i do, it still protects me. I've never burned using that stuff, yet, I still seem to get somewhat brown.

That number on the bottles is not just some arbitrary number that they pick, it's actually the amount of minutes you can stay out in the sun before the sunscreen stops protecting. Sunblocks and sunscreen do not work! It is marketing scam and fraud. Never, never use any sunblock and sunscreen. Just avoid being in the sun too long. Sunscreen and sunblocks causes serious health problems including cancer, pigmentation and allergic reaction.

Going above SPF 30 doesn't make a ton of difference to the amount of sun that actually get's blocked. Going from 30 to 50 only increases UVB protection by ~1.5% (96.5% to 98%) where SPF 100 gets you to 99%. You're better off saving some $ and sticking with 30 unless you're really sensitive.

It also helps to apply the sunscreen before going outside to give your skin time to absorb it.
