I stand by what I said, much as I love this song and Annie Lennox, of the multitude of arrangements I've heard this one was not remotely pleasing to me. I'm also not a fan of this song in it's original arrangement by Leonard Cohen. i'm always amazed when i see a singer pull off a performance without prior familiarity of the song at hand. in this case, it's obvious that lennox doesn't completely know the lyrics, and who knows exactly why? perhaps she was chosen to sing the piece at the last minute. maybe health issues or personal obligations didn't allow her time to practice the piece. i bow down with respect to an artist who can transcend all of that and, in this case, make history with one single performance. amazing!

arguably, but in my estimation, one of the finest renditions of this song, ever. certainly one of her best live deliveries, period. the layers of her emotions peel off one by one to reveal the anguish that is at the core of cohen's narrative, as well as the impossible-to-contain joy that lennox exudes which one imagines to be the result of having been given this great piece to perform. she is at once loving, respectful, and forthright and her voice sounds stunning and evolved. brava!
