Why DO they outsource animation to Korea anyway? I can understand if it's for financial issues, we ALL know how stingy animation companies can be(Eisner, anyone? :P)
Oy... It's Jim Cummings. Famous voice actor... he played Robotnik in Sonic SatAm. They changed the voice for the series because they recorded it in Canada, and had to use their voice actors.
@Greenbluemonk I can only imagine he's doing some kind of "happy dance", because he believes he's got Sonic. The audio wasn't finished, so they probably didn't get round to recording Jim Cummings for that scene.
Funny how the animation appears to be superior and more polished than what the actual show aended up being. these clips make the standard the actual show set look like a straight to DVD disney sequel by comparison
That's brilliant! Really interesting to learn a bit about how the series was conceived, and to see some great animation too! I like seeing how they pitch concepts like these, I need to find out more about it ;)
To RyuujinWolf: Well in the Classic Genesis games, Sonic doesn't seem to react that much to water. He didn't hate water, he just didn't swim that's all. I guess he just preferred walking in the water to actually swimming. Plus I thought it was completely fucking stupid of Sega to not give Sonic the ability to swim. It's an ability that he really should have had from the start. I'm glad that the writers of AOSTH & SatAM gave Sonic the ability to swim.
it al lstarted with Sonic Underground lol to be funny I guess :P (then the movie, then Sonic X, then Olympic Games. That's the ONLY times it's ever been mentioned but it probably derrives from the fact that Sonic never showed the abilty to swim, only to run across water if fast enough (Sonic 3, next gen, Sonic Unleashed) or meraly walk around underwater while holdinh his breath relying on random air bubbles to survive XD (and Tails, Knuckles and Rouge all had playable swimming features before)
Well, no, it's not that Jim doesn't put any effort into it, it's just that the voice he chose to use here didn't fit this iteration of Robotnik. I suppose it's unfair to compare them now, after being a fan of Baldry's Robotnik for so long, but biased or not, I stick to my opinion.
Jim's still one of my favorite voice actors ever, though. His voice for Dr. Robotnik in the second Sonic series fit the character perfectly, and I think Baldry may have influenced Jim's choice-of-voice for that character a little bit.
yeah and dont forget that this is also pretty early. Look at Homer Simpson in his pilot episode, he sounds nothing like he does now. (I mean the tracy short onces)
Also, I feel this pilot is actually remarkably well done. The animation is very fluid and smooth. Milton Knight has incredible talent. Without him, indeed the show would not be the same.
wtf? DC? Do you mean DS? Are you a retard? Sonic had dozens of games in the freakin Sega Genesis ages before this show! damn, how old are you gamer noobs?!
And does anyone remember the gangster episode where Roller and Ball Hog from the first game who appear in the Spring Yard and Scrap Brain zones as well or no?
Anyone notice the robots/badniks who chase Sonic while he is swimming are from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 like the piranha robots from Emerald Hill, and Aquatic Ruins and the Octopus Robot from Oil Ocean? Some of the robots from the first two games appear in this cartoon like Grounder is from Sonic 2 in the Aquatic Ruins while Coconuts is from Emerald Hill and Scratch is based on the Chicken Robot from Winged Fortess.
Amazing hearing Jim Cummings as the AoStH Robotnik. I think his work as SatAM Robotnik was some of the best ever, but Long John Baldry just fit this version of Robotnik better.
Sonic isnt suppose to be able to swim in this show either. The first time I found out he couldnt swim was Sonic Underground, and in an episode if this one i saw him fall in the water and wasnt able to swim so he suck up air bubbles like in the old game, the second time i found he couldnt swim was Sonic OVA, then this show, then Sonic X, tho the games never say if he can swim or not, but he never does, tho he isnt afraid of the water like on the shows.
I don't know if I've seen this episode at all, but when I see that scene with Sonic svimming, and start's grining, and enters that pipe, and the whole pipe scene I get a serious dejavu feeling. Why does Tom 'n Jerry pop up in my head?
Maybe because AoStH and Sonic X is not linked to each other? The only time you'll ever see Sonic swim is in AoStH and SatAM (or Archie, I'm not sure). The other series he can't swim for shit.
I know that the cactus scene and the underwater part of the second scene were used in 'Untouchable Sonic', but I'm certain I've seen parts of the third scene somewhere before. Maybe used in advertisements? The part where Robotnik gets a pie to the face looks familiar.
No, what happened was that when they presented Aosth to ABC they weren't happy with it. So Dic went back and thus that's how Satam came out and why Aosth was instead put on syndication.
This isn't SatAM it's called AoStH ^-^; And the reason it was called SatAM was because it was put on the Saturday Morning slot instead of the Weekday Afternoon slot. And because we couldn't refer to them as [cartoon distributor name]'s Sonic the Hedgehog since they were both made by the same company o_o
Hope that answers your question
And thanks for putting this up Dvariano, it was really interesting to see ^_^
I like how the pilot is better than the actual cartoon turned out to be. It actally has something in common with the game, unlike the cartoon. Sonic is running, there are Badniks, the backgrounds resemble stages in the games and Sonic's spin formation is more accurtate to the game. Even the colour and animation is better here. Now this would have been a show worth watching.
