did it actually HARM them (& Kev esp.) to get a US Billboard no.1 with "Come ON Eileen"? Perhaps it did. Did it make Kev rich enough to live on the royalties for life? dunno. He did a lot of drugs and struggled to be taken seriously after that. But I find their decline a little difficult to understand, I confess.
Now lets not have a slaggong match. "Breakin' Down The Walls Of Heartache", was a major UK hit in 1968 for Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon. Edwin Starrs was a cover vision.
I love the way Dexys songs other than Eileen are real serious music fans songs and you dont have to wade through miles of inane or insulting comments!
i'm one of the few american s i know who is aware they did more than come on eileen, to me this is more soulful than anytthing motown has even come close to doing in over 25 years
AT LAST!! Cheers man,i got this on vinyl but its scratched to buggery,& the live one ive got on cd isnt as corking as this! What a tune to throw away on a b-side eh-very nearly as good as the original-ta again.
top band...very under rated...despite having some of the best selling singles of all time

@jasonpfinch Being afraid of constantly repeating himself didn't help, that and the way he promoted their last major album didn't help.
dirkbogarde44 9 months ago
it's a brilliant cover and, yes, better than the pretty decent original.

This singer is a mush mouth. He can't pronunciate and he killed a great song besides!

Slow Down Slow Down... You are both right. Johnny Johnson (Direction) & Edwin Starr (Motown) have both recorded this track.

Genius!
Thanks for posting this...
Where is this cover from? A B side or somesuch, i know it's not on any of the albums.
I always thought if Dexy's had done a Northern cover album it would have been the best album ever made.
Genius
