  • I am really interested in seeing the documentary put out by the history channel's "History's Mysteries" series on the 1916 shark attacks. It usually is only aired once a year and is not available to purchase. Seeing a recorded hard copy of the program on this video created a renewed hope that the creator may be able to post it. Is there any hope that someone may put it up on youtube?

  • The History Channel one I have was recorded onto a VHS tape from TV. I really don't have anyway to transfer it to youtube, Sorry. Honestly I don't think it's the best documentary on the attacks, but does have some good parts. Hopefully they re-air it at some point this summer.

  • An excellent video. The Essex & Sussex Hotel is the finish line of the Spring Lake 5 Mile Run. Every year I run the race then take a dip in the chilly ocean. I had no idea the attack happened at this precise location. Not that it will stop me from renewing my little tradition again this Memorial Day weekend mind you.

  • lol ok, all of you, it was a bull shark theorists are doing the same as the great white theories,so when you find proof it was a bullshark then you can open tyour mouth and act smart. The truth is no one knows for sure so dont be a smart ass "marine biologist" and think you know what your talking about.

  • you guys are all fuckin lame, it was a shark chill tha fuck out

    faggots

  • WTF(!) IS THIS!!!

  • that was so sad. it really was the 12 days of terror.

  • Anyone who has read Fernicola's book 12 days of terror knows that it was a great white shark. He is the leading expert on the matter and has devoted a huge amount of time weighing up all the possibilities in light of ALL the available evidence! Will all the supposed internet shark scholars quit with the bull shark theory! The water at Matawan could easily accomodate a gw shark!

  • Nobody knows for sure what type of shark it was. Fernicola put forth a good theory, but even he does not know for sure. I heard him say himself that he wasn't certain. Any evidence that would confirm it being a great white is long gone.

  • That is valid! i guess i should qualify it with a "Most likely a great white shark" style comment. Its just annoying when everyone assumes it was a bull shark because they frequently swim up river... does anyone know when the matawan shark fest is? i want to go to the usa this summer and would love to check it out..

  • I like the edward scissorhands music! I live on LBI and have a house in Matawan so I'm really interested in the shark attacks. FYI theres a "matawan shark attacks tour" every year...where they take you to the sights and stuff. The guy whose on shark week every year takes you. Pretty interesting stuff!

  • Cool. Yeah, sharkfest! I have been both years. Have you gone? I am glad matawan decided to start doing that.

  • No, I havent yet but my brother went this past summer and said it was awesome! I am really going to try to get there this year. Maybe ill see you there, haha.

  • that movie they made about this,

    12 days of terror,

    was a really good movie!!!!

  • Very, very nice job here! I read both books on the subject and it has to be one of the weirdest stories I have ever, ever read. I live in Pennsylvania and have been meaning for a couple years now to take a visit to the different attack sites.

  • Where did the music come from. I like it.

  • edward sciccor hands

  • well done bro!

I too did a project on this very subject back in high school. Very well done, and at some point, I would love to visit Matawan Creek in person, which I've yet to do.

  • I believe it is a Poor Beagle shark. The same was used in the shark scene in Perfect Storm. Very interesting theme. Was this a school project?

  • It was a half gold fish, half bull shark hybrid caused by a goldfish mating with a bull shark so it's technically a BULLFISH!

  • I believe it was a bull shark.

  • The Jaws Clip is in there because it is the part of the movie where they directly mention the attacks. These attacks inspired Jaws to a certain extent. You can't say for sure that it was a bull shark when there is quite a bit of evidence that it could be a white shark. Thanks for the comment.

  • Actually it has to be a Bull Shark. Great Whites can't survive in sweat water.

  • No. Matawan creek is brackish not fresh water. White Sharks CAN survive in Brackish water. A quick trip to Matawan Creek will show you it is far from fresh water. The minute you get ou of your car you can smell the ocean and see the fiddler crabs along the banks.

  • Nicely done, and all true. For those who are criticizing, try doing some damn research before opening your mouths. Bull sharks are able to survive in "brackish" water for extended periods of time, and rivers/creeks were no exception.

  • no it actully happened look it up, theres only one clip of jaws and it is at the end. the other movie clips are from 12 days of terror which is based on the true events.

  • hheellllllssss yea new jersey...but this really happend sware

  • This isn't a remake of jaws. This is actual history. It was the first time in US history that sharks attacked more than one person in a year.

  • what an load of shit!!

  • thats in new jersey! i live my matawan creek

  • I've been told that some people believe the shark was a bull shark. And that the Book Jaws was based on this true story.

  • If you like sharks check out adoptashark(dot)com where you can adopt a shark that has a satellite tag and then you know where your shark went in the ocean, very cool

  • was it the same shark? Did they get it?

  • I am related to Charles E. Vansant he was my grandpa never got to meet him and you know why.

  • SHOCKING VID

    CHECK OUT MA CHANNELL

  • Sad

  • Wow...I actually found that interesting :) Thanks!

  • Yh....

  • can u post my 5 mins back on video...jaysus

  • FASCINATING! Great Work!!

  • People we kill cows the same way as sharks kill us.

  • yeah i love to catch and kill dgk4444 before they are 9 years old ....young dgk4444 are weak as piss and dont put up much off a fight....my goal is the EXTINTION of all dgk4444,,,,,looks like there is one left ,not 4 long .

  • LMAO>>> WHAT A Goal in life man, u must like pissing ppl off...if not u need a life, and plays cards or playstation , you mommy would be proud to raise a kid, who "GOAL" in life is too get rid of sharks. CAn u say retarded, stupid follish nonsense

  • Anybody getting a rise out of DKG is just as moronic as him/her. dkg is just some little 13 year old kid on here pissing people off. As for this video, it was pretty good. It is a shame that sharks are killed after they attack people, as if they know any better? I blame Speilberg too, that phony single handidly cut the great white population down a 1/3. Scumbag.

  • i applaud you for this intrigueing very informative tragic moment in history. very scary to think that you never know what is lurking in those nearby waters. creepy pictures of deceased - may they rest in peace.

  • at this time lets all think of the poor great white shark who got blamed for the murders in the lake and of the killing of the kid.

As we now know it was a bull shark and the guy who wrote jaws based his novel on the 1916 killings..and we all no jaws cost the lives of many many great whites..and other sharks too.

  • i live in hazlet, the town next to matawan. seeing all this on video was sick especially since i see this everyday. makes me appreciate it alot more. thanks man. sick video

  • wow, on the history channel yesterday, (august 6th, 2007) they played a show about it. i was watching it then i said that i was never going to go swim in the ocean ever again. and they all said that sharks are nothing to be scared of. my mom was like, you remember all these people don't you? i said, yeah; i read about it on the computer. it's very sad:(

  • That is quite amazing that bull sharks make it that far north!!!

  • Thank You. It is a very interesting story. A great white shark was caught a few days later about 4 miles from where the attacks took place by michael schleisser. It did have human remains in it. But when he sent the remains to a lab, it was concluded that they had been taken from a body that was already dead, and not the result of any attack. However the truth of that statement has never been proven. So no one knows for sure. The only proof left is buried with the victims in the cemeteries.

  • Great vid, Mdecoy. I live about ten minutes from Matawan Creek (I used to live in Keyport) & I was down there yesterday for a short while (near the train station/convenience store area). Looking at it now it's hard to imagine anyone ever swam there - or that they could have been attacked by a shark. There's irony in that many people passing by on their way to the shore don't even know the creek is there, much less about what happened back in 1916.

  • Wow, interesting. I am glad you liked the video. I know it is very hard to believe people swam there or that a shark attacked people. And your right, hundreds of thousands of bennies travel over Matawan Creek each summer and very few know anything about the story.

  • Matawan creek is still there and is relatively the same as it was in 1916. People do not swim there anymore because the water has become much more polluted and matawan now has a swiming area in a nearby lake that is partolled by lifeguards. They did dynamite the water, but it did not destroy the creek.

  • Is this music the opening music to BATMAN RETURNS?

  • Edward Scissorhands.........but close enough.

  • wat movie are the scences from

  • Twelve Days of Terror..... They sell it on amazon or anywhere. It is based on the book written by Dr Fernicola.

  • it was not a bul shark for two reasons Matawan creek is saltwater as it connects witht the ocean and two the bit mark were far to smal to prove other than a great white check back at my vids because soon i will bee making a film on the subject

  • Well I am not so sure about that. Matawan Creek is brackish water, and Captain Cottrell caught a bull shark in the creek a few days after the attacks. So they can certainly survive in there. I am not sure about the bite size, you could be right.

But I look forward to seeing your video!

  • weren't these the attacks that inspired the JAWS story.

  • yes :)

  • very beautifull!!! compliment! :)

  • By trapping the shark in the creek-did the towns people accidently enrage the shark, and create a 'siege mentality' in it.

  • That is quite possible. They did install nets to keep the body of the first victum from being taken out to sea. They might not have realized they were also trapping a shark.

  • .Another consideration,is that the time sequences don't quite fit that the 'Captains shark' was the culprit.Since he saw the shark very soon to it's taking of its first victim(Stillwell). How do we work that in with Johnny Cartan's cousin 'Rennie',who had been injured by a 'sandpaper' like object in the creek earlier in the morning.Ally O'Hara suffered similar just before Stillwell was attacked. Are we saying the shark was in the creek in the morning, then came back or what?

  • sos sad it was in new jeresy i have a book about it!!!!1

  • i dont think anyone fckin cares bout jaws or bullsharks so stfu

  • I want to go on a cool research hunt like that. The early 1900's were so cool and mysterious.

  • The picture is of a Bull shark they look very similar in the face. This is the story Jaws is based on in which they used the more known and feared greatwhite as the model

  • me? :s

  • ur a fucking dumb shit u wanna know why because u have no life

  • Ah, how cute.

  • ur low man...real fucking low...

  • you are a dipshit. this guy worked hard on this. and all you have to say is,'ur low man...real fucking low...'? i bet that you had nothing to say except that. this man has worked hard. i bet you didn't even know about the 1916 shark attacks. you should be scared of creeks and oceans.

  • ive seen the movie 12 days f terror on animal planet i loved it

  • THIS IS WONDERFUL. really enjoyed it. thanks.

  • I knew it sounded familiar!

  • I have see the show, It was a BullShark..

  • had to have been a bullshark

  • you said great a great deal!

  • Avar, many thanks

  • Does anyone know where this music comes from?

  • Really good job. Sad too.

  • Great job guys!!!

  • That was a great clip. And very touching.

  • Are you sure it was a great white shark because it could have been a bull shark because if they were attacked in the creek how the great white get up there. And I saw that 1916 Shark Atacks on the History channel and i saw the great white the remains of humans in it so I still don't know.

  • The truth is no one really knows for sure. There are good arguements for both sides of the debate. Matawan creek is brackish, so it is possible that a White Shark swam up there. The only way to confirm the identity of the shark would be to exhume the victims.

  • I grew up in Matawan and know the story. You did a great job. Bravo

  • good job guys..
