They had the show reset perfectly. Rimmer would be dead, Holister and the crew would be non-existent., and L, K, C, & BB would be bumming around in Star Bug, heading back to earth with smeg.
I think it would be cool and more classic to go back to using the original cameras from season 1 & 2. I just miss that old RD look. :) I personally don't care for the high-tech look. Just me
Yep, needs a laughter track, mixed/balanced well together with the dialogue like in the series' of old. Camera work and effects need to be less fancy too. It's all too superficial and detracts. Keep the next series lofi and intimate like the best of the Dwarf!!
@superspy6 Here's something else a lot of people missed. During season 7 Kochanski FROM A PARALELL UNIVERSE joined the crew, right? So when the nanobots resurrected THE ORIGINAL Red Dwarf crew, how come THE ORIGINAL KOCHANSKI wasn't there?
this was the alternative ending to the "finale" the original had rimmer kick death in the balls then running away. I always thought they should have gone with this ending and leave it on a high.
allthough the program isn't ment to make sence i'm gussing
lister the cat kryten and kochanski did make it back from the mirror universe and fix the ship as shown in the video.
the rest of the crew eventually died in space and because of rimmers meating with death (the reason he is a holigram) and kochanski fakeing her own death lister was the highest ranked crew member left therefore he inherited the ship. rimmer isnt a holigram here because it wasnt the final version.
Yes, the alternate ending is better all round, and makes much more sense with the Back To Earth specials; the entire thing takes place in the mirror universe where the ship has been repaired and only has Lister, Kryten, Rimmer, Cat and Kochanski onboard. The can to the head killed Rimmer which is why he is a hologram in BTE, and we know about Kochanski faking her death already
PetrKl21, there was never a great deal of consistency from one series of Red Dwarf to another. The write will probably say this was addressed in the non-existent series 9.
The Rimmer in "Back to Earth" is the original one because he's also able to recall all their previous adventures. So who knows what became of the resurrected flesh and blood Rimmer from series 8. Maybe he simply died and the old Rimmer returned after growing weary of/failing his adventures as Ace. Maybe he even traded places with the living Rimmer who instead became Ace? We'll probably never know. All we know is the living Rimmer is gone and the hologram from 1-7 has for some reason returned.
please explain to me how in back to earth rimmer remembers the origional despair squid (from series 5) whe the rimmer who encountered the despair squid went off to be ace rimmer
If you noticed the Back To Earth Rimmer was hard light too (from Legion). In BTE, though, they pretended that there were one or two more series. The new Rimmer probably died and the old one came back (though this wasn't actually explained).
I totally agree. I've always wanted the hologram to come back. They've been through so much together with the crew. I really want things to (almost) go back to like it was. Just the original boys, and a Holly with Red Dwarf! ;) I may write a fan fiction about it. lol
(SPOILER of season 7) The problem is that Rimmer was become to the new Ace Rimmer and fly away to space to others dimensions...(the real Ace Rimmer die in 7x02). who is the Rimmer in "Red Dwarf: Back to Earth"?
I dont get it peeps. I remember there was a cliffhanger with Rimmer in the end...but where is that cliffhanger, any youtube vids showing it? Was that in series 8 or 9?
the cliffhanger was in the very last series, series 8, there never was a series 9.i never watch the back where rimmer is left there alone it makes me want to cry. It should be on youtube, both of the endings.
its just a shame they didn't actually resolve any of the cliffhangers in the new specials. It was great seeing the cast together again, and there were a few funny moments, but in general it wasn't that great. Hopefully the specials will at least pave some way for a real continuation of the previous episodes.
ahh this explains it all. but this must be an alternate ending. in the other one "like heyarnoldsspleen" said, the crew stay in the good universe and resurect the now dead rimmer as a hologram.
They likely won't explain it, but you could argue, ignoring this ending, that Kocahnski was killed when the crew went back to the disintergrating Dwarf with the antidote, Rimmer obviously died even after kneeing Death in the balls, but they brought him back as a hard light hologram

@JJonahJamesonquite right sir, I seemed to have assumed the nanobots recreated red dwarf back in series 7. I think its because they kind of did, but only at the very end. It brings me onto another question though, which is: Why didnt the nanobots recreate the original Lister (and even his pet cat)?
The nanobots werent to know that Lister never died, in the same way they didnt know the ship wasnt build to its blueprints (thus the nanobots build a even better red dwarf that the original)
I think it's because they rebuilt the crew from the little piles of dust they were all reduced to in the radiation leak, so they wouldn't be able to rebuild Lister, as there were no particles of him to rebuild.
However - why didn't they rebuild Kochanski? The Kochanski from series 7 and 8 is from an alternate dimension, so when the nanos rebuilt the crew, they should also have rebult the Kochanski from *this* dimension, so there should be two Kristine Kochanski's running around!
lister ejected all of the little piles of dust into space in little tubes remember? :P as someone said red dwarf was full of little holes but its always been awsome nontheless.
That wasn't ever actually in the series - it was a deleted scene from The End I think (it's in the 'Original Asembly' on the Bodysnatcher DVD); so as it's not actually in the episode, arguably in the series proper that ejection scene didn't happen. It was in the novels, but the continuity from the novels and the series is wildly divergent.
There are four. The first two that Grant and Naylor wrote together (Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life), then they had their falling out and each wrote his own sequil to the second book (Last Human by Naylor and Backwards by Grant).
this is the origional ending of series 8 and can be found in the special features on the DVD. this isnt from back to earth at all, dont belive it haha.
A cliffhanger's where they leave you with a really big unfinished item at the end of an episode to bait you into watching the next one to find out what'll happen next - like finishing an episode with the lead character hanging on the edge of a cliff =^-^=
Ah this really was the Red Dwarf comeback everyone was hoping for, an absolute masterpiece! I laughed until I bled. The way they got back to earth, who'd have thought they were actually playing "Better than Life!" A great plot twist. And to actually end up back on Red dwarf, still in deep space at the end, what a cliff hanger! Obviously setting it up for the just announced 6 part series next year. Heaven!
Oh and you left out the bit where Rimmer becomes a hologram, i think he gets hit again by Tony Slattery the Diespensing Machine, then gets remade as a Hologram.
well guys i just stablished that they wont end up on another cliffhanger, they finish the specials and open up a new series that is the plan from doug naylor ( director ).
when is this episode on??? I really want to watch it, I have a series VIII script and it said that the original plot for the ending was after being eaten by the stuff, it burns up and goes at speeds never before reaches and smashes into Earth and destroys the civilisation on it and it ends with rimmer exchanging insurance details with someone on Earth...
series 7 & 8 were a rubbish compared to earlier series.i'm looking forward to the new episodes but part of me thinks it will be crap like star wars episode one it's been to long.leaving it on a cliffhanger was sort of good like the italian job,You could make up your own ending
"It would be a shame if the cliffhanger ending is not resolved in some form."
I really disagree with this. If after nine years they waste time on that cliffhanger I'll be really annoyed. The cliffhanger wasn't gripping in the slightest. My opinion is that it'd be best for the specials to never mention the events of series 8. They were a mistake; let's move on.
I think he slightly re-edited it. The Death bit isn't in that alternative ending.
I think he should have kept the line of the drinks machine saying "you're the captain now" or whatever it said, as this concludes the "when I'm captain of this ship" discussion they had at the start of the episode.
Anyway, imagine starting the new specials with this - completely irrelevant material, 5 minutes wasted resolving a story that nobody cares about!
I don't think this special follows on from Series 8. Look at the costumes, Lister is wearing his III/IV/V leather jacket, and Rimmer is wearing his III/IV/V style outfit (but blue). My estimate is that it's an alternative timeline taken from sometime around series 3, 4 or 5. The "what if" of them if they never lost Red Dwarf, if they never got confined to Starbug. Obviously Rimmer picked up hardlight somehow, it seems to follow.
So my guess is that it's not after series 8, but series 4 maybe.
There is no way this is anything before season 7. The actors are way too old, the sets too sophisticated and it looks in every way like series 7 or 8.
About the sophisticated look, they're hardly going to use poor quality equipment just to achieve a halfassed look to make it seem like an earlier season are they? Obviously they'll use the best equipment they can at the time.
I see what you mean about the actors being older. But you can hardly blame the actors for aging can you? C'mon, didn't you watch Ouroborus? Lister appeared ina flash back set before series 1 in the timeline, but he looked the same age he was in series 7.
I wasn't complaining about the age of the actors or the sophisticated sets, I was just saying that you could tell this was not before series 7 because of those factors.
However, from Series 7 onwards the scripts have been really awful simply because Rob Grant has left.
Well, IMO, if Ouroborus (I'm sure I've spelt thta wrong) used the actors in their current age to show a pre-series 1 flashback, then I'm not going to take their ages as it definintly not being before series 7, if you're with me.
Also I don't think they're awful, just in a different style/taste/genre. I mean the emphasis was off comedy and more on sci-fi drama. I don't think it's bad just... different to what Red Dwarf was appreciated for before by fans.
Like it. I always found that ending more fulfilling anyway (after finding it on the VIII DVD) I'm dying to know why/how Rimmer's a hologram again in the new Dave specials!
i gotta say this is a pretty clever piecing together of the pieces of footage and logistacally this could bridge any gaps in the shows joining, part from how they got to earth so quickly seeing as (give or take a bit) they are 3 million light years from earth. but this covers the crew possibly not featuring in the specials as of what has been heard there is no evidence to say that the other cast like the captain and so on are taking part in the special.
Maybe so. This is probably the route they will take. Or perhaps just a throw-away line within the show which hints at how it could have been resolved?
You cheeky sod, thats the alternative ending off the dvd, thats actually how the episode was meant to end up until they decided they would prefer to leave it as a cliff hanger.
The fact you pretend it was your idea is shocking, and you thought you would get away with it too if it wasn't for me, the meddling dwarfer!!!
I don't pretend anything. I know it's the alternate ending. Read the info I posted about my video, I'm very honest about where I got the clips from:
"Here's one idea I had for a quick resolution of the ending. It involves reediting the alternate ending from the Series 8 DVD. A voiceover from one of the characters may help to make it flow better. I hope you enjoy."
Given how they resolved the Series 6 cliffhanger by using the original ending, this is what they're probably going to use anyway to resolve the Series 8 cliffhanger. So it's not incorrect, but Rimmer will probably end up killing himself and being turned back into hologram of some sort.
There are some pictures of Rimmer now wearing his old 'H' logo on his forehead, so I think you may be right, perhaps he felt that, as he never done anything correct in his life, he killed himslf to save the crew... who knows?
I'm not pretending I made this ending up at all! Have you even read the description of my video? If you read it you will see that I'm suggesting ways they COULD resolve the cliffhanger of Series 8, and I'm suggesting how they could use the alternate ending off the Season 8 DVD as one method of resolving it. How on earth could I make this ending up? Do I just happen to know the cast and throw them together in costume to film this sequence? Only an idiot would think that!
Hmmm, that's actually pretty good. Here's a thought on something else you could try...
You could edit out the bits where we see the paper burning and just have Rimmer at Death's feet. He does the "only the good" bit and legs it. Then you have the part where they fix the machine (like you have now) and Rimmer comes in with the paper (which has changed back again), and then carry on as you did from there.
I like this version. I'm just putting it out there.
What happend to the bit where Rimmer kicks Death in the croch.

vpurev 2 years ago
A cliffhanger's where they leave you with a really big unfinished item at the end of an episode to bait you into watching the next one to find out what'll happen next - like finishing an episode with the lead character hanging on the edge of a cliff =^-^=
KyBlackCat 2 years ago
When something big like the Series 8 Finale is left unfinished allowing for another opening such as this special.

Heaven!
W4real 2 years ago
That was pretty cool smeghead, if they don't resolve it, i'm believing your theory.
2270000 2 years ago
Oh and you left out the bit where Rimmer becomes a hologram, i think he gets hit again by Tony Slattery the Diespensing Machine, then gets remade as a Hologram.
2270000 2 years ago
well guys i just stablished that they wont end up on another cliffhanger, they finish the specials and open up a new series that is the plan from doug naylor ( director ).

when is this episode on??? I really want to watch it, I have a series VIII script and it said that the original plot for the ending was after being eaten by the stuff, it burns up and goes at speeds never before reaches and smashes into Earth and destroys the civilisation on it and it ends with rimmer exchanging insurance details with someone on Earth...

series 7 & 8 were a rubbish compared to earlier series.i'm looking forward to the new episodes but part of me thinks it will be crap like star wars episode one it's been to long.leaving it on a cliffhanger was sort of good like the italian job,You could make up your own ending

I think, as in one of the possible alternate endings, Ace should come back and save the day. Stoke me a Klipper, I'll be back for Christmas.

that's how it should of ended

"It would be a shame if the cliffhanger ending is not resolved in some form."
I really disagree with this. If after nine years they waste time on that cliffhanger I'll be really annoyed. The cliffhanger wasn't gripping in the slightest. My opinion is that it'd be best for the specials to never mention the events of series 8. They were a mistake; let's move on.

this is just the series 8 deleted scenes/ aternate ending
calthecryon 2 years ago 2
I think he slightly re-edited it. The Death bit isn't in that alternative ending.
I think he should have kept the line of the drinks machine saying "you're the captain now" or whatever it said, as this concludes the "when I'm captain of this ship" discussion they had at the start of the episode.
Anyway, imagine starting the new specials with this - completely irrelevant material, 5 minutes wasted resolving a story that nobody cares about!

im not sure what the mix is, but the tune is adagio for strings, do a search for it on here and the best mix is the live tiesto one.

TheFunGreenDragon 2 years ago
There is no way this is anything before season 7. The actors are way too old, the sets too sophisticated and it looks in every way like series 7 or 8.
amancalledsimon 2 years ago
About the sophisticated look, they're hardly going to use poor quality equipment just to achieve a halfassed look to make it seem like an earlier season are they? Obviously they'll use the best equipment they can at the time.
I see what you mean about the actors being older. But you can hardly blame the actors for aging can you? C'mon, didn't you watch Ouroborus? Lister appeared ina flash back set before series 1 in the timeline, but he looked the same age he was in series 7.
TheFunGreenDragon 2 years ago
I wasn't complaining about the age of the actors or the sophisticated sets, I was just saying that you could tell this was not before series 7 because of those factors.
However, from Series 7 onwards the scripts have been really awful simply because Rob Grant has left.
amancalledsimon 2 years ago
Well, IMO, if Ouroborus (I'm sure I've spelt thta wrong) used the actors in their current age to show a pre-series 1 flashback, then I'm not going to take their ages as it definintly not being before series 7, if you're with me.
Also I don't think they're awful, just in a different style/taste/genre. I mean the emphasis was off comedy and more on sci-fi drama. I don't think it's bad just... different to what Red Dwarf was appreciated for before by fans.

"Red Dwarf: Back to Earth" takes place 9 years following "Only the Good...", Kochanski is dead, and Holly is offline due to leaving the water tap on.

they are doing three 23 minute episodes now instead of two 40 minutes for the new ones
binmanbruce2 2 years ago
i gotta say this is a pretty clever piecing together of the pieces of footage and logistacally this could bridge any gaps in the shows joining, part from how they got to earth so quickly seeing as (give or take a bit) they are 3 million light years from earth. but this covers the crew possibly not featuring in the specials as of what has been heard there is no evidence to say that the other cast like the captain and so on are taking part in the special.

this is a deleted scene from the last episode
plubster 3 years ago 2
I don't think the specials will follow on the cliffhanger. I think they' re just going to ignore it.
05BishopG 3 years ago
Maybe so. This is probably the route they will take. Or perhaps just a throw-away line within the show which hints at how it could have been resolved?
smegheaddude 3 years ago
You cheeky sod, thats the alternative ending off the dvd, thats actually how the episode was meant to end up until they decided they would prefer to leave it as a cliff hanger.
The fact you pretend it was your idea is shocking, and you thought you would get away with it too if it wasn't for me, the meddling dwarfer!!!
dunglikeahonkey 3 years ago
I don't pretend anything. I know it's the alternate ending. Read the info I posted about my video, I'm very honest about where I got the clips from:
"Here's one idea I had for a quick resolution of the ending. It involves reediting the alternate ending from the Series 8 DVD. A voiceover from one of the characters may help to make it flow better. I hope you enjoy."
smegheaddude 3 years ago
Given how they resolved the Series 6 cliffhanger by using the original ending, this is what they're probably going to use anyway to resolve the Series 8 cliffhanger. So it's not incorrect, but Rimmer will probably end up killing himself and being turned back into hologram of some sort.
CinemaBiohazard 3 years ago
There are some pictures of Rimmer now wearing his old 'H' logo on his forehead, so I think you may be right, perhaps he felt that, as he never done anything correct in his life, he killed himslf to save the crew... who knows?
Can't wait till easter!

The guy is an idiot trying to pretend he made this ending up! The only thing he did was that naff bit of text at the beginning. It's a disgrace!!!
mellowNdark 3 years ago
I'm not pretending I made this ending up at all! Have you even read the description of my video? If you read it you will see that I'm suggesting ways they COULD resolve the cliffhanger of Series 8, and I'm suggesting how they could use the alternate ending off the Season 8 DVD as one method of resolving it. How on earth could I make this ending up? Do I just happen to know the cast and throw them together in costume to film this sequence? Only an idiot would think that!

You should include the part where Rimmer kicks Death in the nuts, there should also be a fake opening sequence like in all the other episodes.
CharlieTeague 3 years ago
whatever they do you know it will be genuis! it's gonna be a 2 part episode in April apparantley!
paranoidpfanclub 3 years ago 4
Hmmm, that's actually pretty good. Here's a thought on something else you could try...
You could edit out the bits where we see the paper burning and just have Rimmer at Death's feet. He does the "only the good" bit and legs it. Then you have the part where they fix the machine (like you have now) and Rimmer comes in with the paper (which has changed back again), and then carry on as you did from there.
I like this version. I'm just putting it out there.
srmcd1 3 years ago 3
Good idea, but I wanted to leave the paper burning parts in my resolution so that it kept with the continuity of the final episode of Series 8.
