i think that most of his growls are treu but he's also using some effects. in an older video (i think it was one of w:o:a 2001 but i'm not really sure) of practicing before a concert you see that shagrath is steping on a foot pedal before the voice changes...

that's not quite true, metal should be without playbacks yes, but that's different from using effects. Almost every guitarist uses effect pedals, and voice effect pedals don't seem to be any problem to me, since Dimmu Borgir has enough songs to prove that his pure voice is awesome too

guitar effects are a different thing. there would be no metal without them. its just that rappers and pop singers sue voice effects and this kind of reminded me of that. but yes i have heard his voice on some other songs and its surprising to hear it coming from someone in a black metal band :P
