Well part of the reason wrecks at Daytona and Talladega get so big is because of the small proximity to the other cars. See, if you slam the brake and come to a screeching halt, you're bound to get hit from BEHIND by other cars who didn't. Especially if you were in the middle of bumpdrafting. Thats why drivers will hang in the back sometimes, because half the time its the guys hitting you from behind that you have to worry about, and not you hitting the guys in front.
