  • kendo is vry good 4 spar.. and its also the way of the sword..elegant fast n fatal.. s 4 gumdo, it is d art or the way of cutting..smooth movements with accurate precision n flawless cuts..ive learn gumdo b4 in korea,n im a 4th dan black.. bt stop cuz of other commitments..bt dis is a art dat i will nvr stop training..

  • the costume they are wearing is obviously copied from the japanese traditional clothes. but badly copied. why do they do that? I am japanese and i find it weird.

  • it was good dancing. look cool!

  • is straw or bamboo cutting with a sharp sword hard?

  • @aznshrimp90 yes it is, one bamboo poll is equivalent to a leg bone, and mat/straw cutting is like the fleshy bits in your body, if the angle of the cut is wrong the 'straw' will not cut nicely and the bamboo could bend your blade

  • I would really like to learn haidong gumdo. It looks really fluid and precise.

I'm currently a practitioner of shinkendo and gumdo, to me, looks like it has a lot of similarities. I could be wrong, though.

  • I think that shinlkendo and gumdo/kumdo do have lots if common, but do you want that? Howe about a new art to develop your skills, or staying with the one you know?

That said, I heard that Na han-Il, the founder of Kumdo, was a 4th dan in Shinkendo...

  • I've done Haidong Gumdo for about 2 years in Korea. I didn't get chance to get my black belt due to coming to US. So I left with only Black and Red belt. Gumdo focuses a lot on forms and movements. As you ascend you have to show your physical strength and patients. Thinking about picking up Kendo this time using my experience from gumdo. I love to spar with people and share techniques and insights.

  • yokid is totally right and Rcrabino can't even write proper english. 'waist'? WTF?

  • trust me takadagenbe dont try this art all your practice in iaido and kenjutsu will all go to waist! gumdo is for people that wants to look cool holding a sword.

  • Takadagenbe, here's some better advice: try it for yourself. The two are very different but you can learn a lot buy studying those differences and thereby get more enjoyment out of which ever one you come to prefer, whether it be Iaido, Gumdo or Fencing.

What would truly be a waist would be to dismiss something out of hand without ever trying it.

  • I train for nine hours a week in the dojang and am expected to train for four hours extra at home. I've ripped my feet apart, got blisters, being hurt badly, and am still third gyup. Does that sound like kendo? yes???? Well then kindly stop ranting about an art of which you have no experience.

  • He brandishes the Japanese sword.

The Japanese name is called a KATANA.

  • The Jingum and Katana share a lot of similarities. But there are differences. I can't say for certain but I'd suspect the ones used in the video would more likely be jingum.

  • He's not brandishing a katana, there is a wiki on the differences between korean and japanese swords =]

PS I've done haidong gumdo for many years with a grandmaster, and to be honest, you should really also be taking up hand to hand martial arts too, cos ive never happened to be in a street-sword-fight lol, although yeah, as a martial art thats not primarily for street self defence it is good and great for sword skillz :)

  • hrm... id kinda like to try this art... im a long time practitioner of Nihon Kenjutsu, Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido and Mugai Ryu Iaido... kinda curious about this...

  • In Korea, how they separate Kumgo from the original Japanese Kendo? I am curious.

  • Depending on the school, the line is probably quite blurry.

  • I learned about Haidong Gumdo In Korea

The Korean Gumdo and Japanese Kendo is different Even the traditional history

also not same The fighting skill, rule,

weapon, and action, all thing is different.

Each nation's Gumdo, Kendo have two different type,

sports (fast wrist) ,real martial type (hearvy sword)

  • Gumdo was specially designed to counter several foes. Kendo is more specialized for one on one

  • exactly. their basic strategies and purposes are different.

  • so..intense

  • i do this martial arts. it's called Koryo Gumdo. You can join in it in Leesburg, VA. It's awesome

  • There are many different flavours. What's shown here is footage of one of the main Gumdo organizations, Haidong Gumdo.

  • I wonder how they pull that off....huh, so swift. I do not think that i would ever be able to attain that edge alignment.

  • They are quite skilled. Got to love this.

  • "Lion" by Kodo

  • Can anyone telle me the name of the SoundTrack pls?

  • Wonderful cutting, grat soundtrack! Great stuff!
