one thing i have to say is the cpu is to blame and i can tell you that for a fact..if you overclock the cpu to around 2.3ghz it will play hd with out a problem.
i only say this because i have the same netbook and i have overclocked mine.
and i am very impressed with the results.
as it is crap overclock it and it shines.
1.6ghz atom not good with 1080p
2.3ghz atom good with 1080p
but still its way better then most of the other crap netbooks out there
@scaleop4 Some people have overclocked it to 2.3ghz but i my self am to scared to go passed 1.8ghz do you know if it is dangerous to go past 1.8ghz???
With CoreAVC I find it CAN cope with some 1080p videos, ie. Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. Not as "intense" as Prince of Persia, but it's something. 720p works really well. (Source: I own the computer)
VLC 1.0 (which you'd have been using at this time) doesn't do DXVA codec offload in Windows, and I'm pretty sure that QuickTime/iTunes don't either. If you'd used Media Player Classic, mPlayer, or another player that does (or a player on Linux that uses VDPAU), the 1080p playback would have been way, way smoother.
Thanks for the helpful video because I'm hoping to get a 311 with win7 eventually and was wondering about video quality.
On my old slow pc, quicktime seems to play videos a bit smoother than itunes but most of what I play is standard def. Looking forward to decent quality in the small form factor.
Every video is showing it run games or movies. Why cant I find a SINGLE video that shows it surfing the net?
I have a desktop for games and stuff. Does anybody really buy a netbook specifically for games?
I am interested in how well I can surf my sites before I spend the cash on something that stutters.
I would love to see someone jump on Amazon then over to Hulu, then hit up google and do a few searches, then hit a few blogs, a few youtube videos, and you see where I am going with this.
i agree with you completely, there isnt A SINGLE VIDEO with this netbook surfing the web, but i have this netbook myself actually, and trust me when it tell you it is a great web experience. with the prerealese of flash 10.1 Hulu works great as well as hd youtube videos.
when a few hulu and youtube tabs are open at a single time though, switching from tab to tab can be a bit glitchy ( but what would you expect). overall it is a very pleasent and enjoyable web experience. though i would recomend using google chrome as a browser on this device due to the fact that it runs much more quickily and smoothly.
hope this helps

(ps- i may be picking a camera up for the holidays, so i may post a few videos of the device myself later) =D
This netbook can do this like a regular notebook, with the only defference that Flash and video is not producing laggs anymore on web sites, so you can open 10 tabs with youtube, amazon and ebay, etc.
I second the WMP-HC. The point of the Ion was to get GPU assisted playback. From what I know VLC and Itunes do not have that implemented yet in the software. If that too much work try the default Windows Media Player in Windows 7 b/c that works well also.
Have you downloaded the prerelease version of 10.1 from Adobe? This allows the CPU to offload some of the heavy lifting to the GPU. If you haven't, it would be interesting to retry the 1080P trailers after the download.
my HP 311 runs 1080 off youtube flawlessly. maybe you need to terminate some of theose usesless startup processes?

with CoreAVC, MKV H.264 and Media Player Classic HOME CINEMA version, 1080p on the 311 should be flawless.

OMG! i was about to buy this netbook aswel, because i thought it could handle 1080p. Now back to square one. Asus N1201N is too expesive

For me, 720p is pretty good enough for a netbook. If you want to watch 1080p videos or movies, then just get a notebook.
I've really high hopes for this netbook. I'm getting pretty soon :) ..

I have a HP 311 with the N270 processor and 1GB DDR3 RAM
I ran full 1080p yesterday and it worked flawlessly. I even hooked it up to my TV via an HDMI cable and it looked spectacular. =D
Absolutely amazing laptop!! I can not believe it!! I love this computer.

VLC does not use hardware acceleration. Use MPCHC instead.
anewman1980 2 years ago
he's probably using 2gb memory i got 3gb, and 1080p plays fine
Naisneru 2 years ago
Could be Itunes itself. Not the best choice of media player. I would recommend MPCHC.
