When I started the mehquig channel I wanted to keep on doing taxi vlogs but I took out all the editing and even stopped chopping off the behinning and the end. I stopped adding music, and that left only the basics, me talking. I think the channel is going to catch on slowly :)
I've always enjoyed your vlogs & yes, you should do that more often.
I think you've hit on another problem. People don't vlog, or not very often anyway, because they don't think they're any good at it. Often they are wrong, which is a great pity :)
I have actually been meaning to do a vlog on that very subject... i.e. how finding the time to make videos can be difficult when balanced without interests outside of YT (although I'm sure thats been spoken about many times). I know that's why I've been struggling to make my regular stuff let alone do extra vlogs as well.
Anyway watch this space... I'm about to post something that on and off has take 3 weeks to edit...
ahh don't get me wrong... it's not like I'm out busy climbing mountains or anything like that.
Sometimes it is just nice to chill out with the cat on your lap while watching TV. And of course with seeing Babs about 50% of what used to be 'free time' is now taken up seeing her. But hey, there are pros and cons to that... ;)
thought i'd give you the vlog summary there as I doubt I will get a chance to film it until the new year!
I must admit that the amount of work required to edit some of my videos can be daunting and takes away some of the fun (i'm not looking forward to working through the 90 minutes recorded for my upcoming Christmas special)
yep it did make a nice change to do the short 2 minute vlog/response to Curt last week. I suppose as long as there is a point in terms of making vlogs there is no rule that says the vlog has to be on some epic subject. Talk about anything... just have a point!
My wife loves the editing part of video making, though not every one of her videos has that element in it. I, on the other hand, mainly do as you do Andy and just talk to camera.
I really ought to put more videos up, but don't always feel confident about the subject matter.
I do agree that the content of the video ought to be the most important thing, but when you have great content married to wonderful editing skills it's hard to resist.
I know some people really enjoy that editing process & i can understand that.
I do a fair amount of editing myself when i do outdoor videos. But, when it's a straight forward vlog to camera, i don't really see the need for that. For some, that editing can add a little something to a vlog. But, not for all :)
I bought a new webcam a while back for this very reason, but recently I haven't really had much to vlog about. However, I've been sitting here for the past couple hours working on a video, and right now I'm waiting for the effects and transitions of a 10 minute video to finish loading so I can render it! Sometimes I spend way too much time on these videos! Haha
Ken sure nailed it, yup. Oddly enough, though, looking back to how I've approached this from the beginning, just hitting record, getting the words out, then uploading has never been my strong point. If it weren't for at least some amount of editing, the viewer would wanna rip their own flesh off (more so than they already do, of course). I admire you people who can do that.
I was having trouble with vids loading yesterday too. Glad you got it to work.
Now, you are one person who uses editing exactly as it should be used Curt. I love the way you mix locations & you probably even invented the "fridge cam".
if everyone had your editing skills, there would be no problem :)
I certainly understand where Ken and you are coming from - but for some people - even if just a talking head - it's easier said than done. Some people are just worriers - esp when once you put it on here - there is no way to take it back - it's out there - and they want to make sure they get it right. Others - it's very easy to just turn on the camera and talk. It's not so much a time or technical issue - as a personality issue - if that makes sense.
I started out on this site as a basic vlogger but suddenly I was spending hours just uploading a vlog! Good sound and lighting is still important -- nobody wants to watch somebody who's in the dark with a horrible webcam, but sometimes we completely go overboard when we don't need to! :)
I thnk it's only natural that, after a while, you want to improve the quality of your vlogs. Then you begin to realise that it's not quite as important as you first thought.
Getting back to basics and focusing on content rather than production is a good message for vloggers. Since I haven't been watching a lot of content vlog wise, I am, however, aware of the pressure the sight has put on us to produce vids w/ a bit of professional polish. It comes with the territory and I view it as a good thing.

I didn't know about that channel. I'll have to check it out. I enjoy your taxi vlogs.
It gives you a feeling of freedom to get back to the basics sometimes, doesn't it? :)

Absolutely...

Good video, Andy. Yes, some of my favorite videos are just basic blogs where the people are just sitting and talking and being honest. Best kind!
PaintedRavensong 2 years ago
Thanks. Being honest is the key i feel. If you're trying to be something that you're not, it often shows :)

But to counter that it can be a real joy to make the quick low maintenance videos. Perhaps I should do that more often...

If you do make that vlog, i may well be tempted to respond.
What's all this about a life outside of YT?
I actually had a friend of mine on Facebook the other day, ask if i get paid to be online? LOL :)

I do not envy you the amount of editing that you have to do. it's always worthwhile in the end, especially in your case, but... :)

Like i said to Curt. You are a master of editing & use it to great effect.
i wouldn't want your videos any other way Pappy :)

That pretty well explains what i was talking about.
Sometimes videos need all the fancy bits, i accept that. But, that doesn't make it any less frustrating when you're making them.
We suffer for our art :)

I agree, about a year ago i stopped with the intro and outros and stopped using the camcorder and I just vlog to a crappy webcam :-)
Ranblv 2 years ago
I also stopped having any kind of intro & at probably around the same time too.
I have no problem with intros & outros as long as they are sensible. But some of them are nearly as long as the actual video! That does put me off :)

I do understand what you mean Danny.
As i said, i'm lucky in that i am able to just turn on the camera & talk. I realise that not everyone can do that, for whatever reason.
I also understand the worrying side. I often have "concerns" about my videos & sometimes think long & hard before posting them.
But, like in any artform, you can edit & tweak the art until it loses its original meaning.
I hope that makes sense :)

I'll be staying tooned :)

There is nothing wrong with a bit of polish. Just as long as it's not at the expense of the content :)
