most people think PI is crappy but to be honest if your making your own FX its incredibly powerfull. my only grip is that it remains 2D based. ide like to use it in a 3dimensional environment. (sure i can use my 3d app - and it might be possible in the AE version) but ide like to see it native in its GUI. PI had a competitor years about that was good 'Sparks' i think it was called, and it did have use 3D space for particles, to bad it lacked preset fx bundles like PI
