As far as the marines go I knew one marine a few years ago. First he told me he was kicking around the idea of joining the military and being fifteen years older and infinitely wiser I told him it was a stupid idea and not to do it. He joined the marines anyway and within two years was discharged with severe PTSD and his mother notified me he was on anti-psychotic meds. I guess he was too messed up to tell me himself. That's my experience with the troops.

Based on what happened to my friend I'd have to say that most of the troops just graduated high school and don't know what else to do so they join the military and have no idea what they're getting themselves into. Actually seeing someone blown apart right in front of your eyes or very nearly escaping death are much different in person than they are in a video game. In the old days they called it "shell shock" and now it's called PTSD and it's happening a lot.

I have family friends with sons and daughters who have signed up for military service. Each of them had a 3.5 gpa MINIMUM. One is in ROTC training (Purdue Univ.), two are at the Air Force Academy, two are in OTS with the Marines and another 5 or 6 are going through Basics with the Army and Airforce.
