  • Best conversation in any cRPG. I don't know why. I don't care. Simply magical.

  • Why would Vigil repeat Sovereign? "Perhaps, they're alien, and their motives are unknowable". If Vigil was kicking out Disinformation, then ME 3 will have Major twists. And I'm betting it will.

  • This explains how Normandy crew were able to hack multiple doors in collector base. They use the same technology as intended by Reapers, but it worked against them in this particular case. There is no plot hole!!!

  • @MalixAbyss well dude unless they wanted a bunch of defective babies (incest would happen eventually), that wouldn't work

  • @BlakAttk

Incest is also a vital part of evolution, it's not all bad. Oversimplified, you have the same odds of creating offspring with much better genes as you do of offspring with 'bad' genes (read alleles). If you have a civilization that has the most basic understanding of biotechnology and manipulating genetics (such as us today, so it's safe to assume the Protheans had better technology) you could make it work.

  • this is one of my favorite conversations in the entire series so far. In fact, one of my favorite conversations out of every video game. Thanks for uploading it.

  • this theme song for vigil is haunting! i love jack wall

  • This is one of my favorite video game moments of all time.

  • @MalixAbyss think about it, there weren't enough resources to support a population and even if they did try to reproduce, they would have to resort to inbreeding which would cause all sorts of disorders

  • Manshep with default face = 10/10.

Way too much of the vile femshep.

  • @MalixAbyss I'm guessing they didn't have the resources as most planets were plundered.

  • If there is a Mass Effect film, they MUST include this scene as well.

  • I wanna cry . . . . could someone give me a tissue???

  • Well, this makes me think of the galaxy in a whole new light. No other game has been this engaging in a long time. But what do you expect? This is a BioWare game. They've always made great games. The five dislikers are obviously MW2 addicts who haven't bothered to touch any non-CoD game in years.

  • @MrOpenGamer ha. could be.

  • @MrOpenGamer If you want to think of the galaxy in a whole new light, take a university level astronomy course (an elective of course). Mass Effect 1 was really awesome but Mass Effect 2 was very disappointing (story wises), I was like "WTF" when I saw the human reaper....

I think Knights of the Old Republic is Bioware's best game.

  • @MrOpenGamer wow man 9 months ago this video had 5 dislikes and it didnt go up ever since

  • jeremy irons speaks for the protheans! :D

  • Shortly after this, Vigil shut down for good. :(

  • I really liked this part. The music and his voice/lines go so well together.

  • This is beautiful

But do remember that this is a game. What the Protheans are feeling are probably what the people in poverty on Earth are feeling right now. People are dying through dirty water heck people are dying with NO water. Wars ravage peoples homes, destroy economies and ruin lives. Think about them and do something. It could happen to anyone =(

  • Simply HeartBreaking this is again like most people here my favourite part of this game-Mass effect one of the few games of today that is a masterpiece same with mass effect 2......Prothean man they were guinouses....even tho there a fictional race your heart has to go out to them.

  • the Protheans are the Collectors

  • this is one of the most epic conversations in gaming history.period

  • Assuming the Protheans were completely united then that means they completely relied on each other. If so the current civilization has hope as it is not united at all. Think about it humans have Cerberus to advance humans and no one else while the salarians have the special task force and the council has Spectres. and lets not forget the galaxy as a whole that is split as well. Everybody is ready for war unlike the Protheans. If u ask me we are more prepared for the reapers than they are for us

  • "In the end, what does it matter? Your survival depends on stopping them, not in understanding them."

    That's my favorite line!

  • I loved this conversation. The music along with the very somber story about the Protheans told by Vigil really brings a tear to your eye.

  • best game ever!

  • This is the best conversation in ME1. So emotional.

  • No conversation matches this one in ME2. Everything you start understanding is pretty amazing

  • After fighting your way through hordes of Geth, you get to this part. Every thing slows down, and you and your squad learn about what happened to the Protheans, and the secret of the Citadel.

    Epic.

  • I love this part of the game. So calming and epic.

  • The Cycle of Destruction must have a purpose! No one has ever broken it, so the consequences of doing it are still unknown. Maybe a possible storyline for Mass Effect 4.

  • this scene made me think, independently of the story, about something stays beyond of our comprehension in this universe we lived.

    Great story :)

  • When I think about what happened to the Protheans, I feel so sad. It seemed as though there was so much potential...but perhaps, if Shepard plays it right...the current galactic races might just pull through okay. :)

  • i just finished me2 and cant wait for 3

but it will still take to 2011 if im right D:

    hurry up bioware lol

  • Yep, 2011 sounds right (they said hopefully 2 years). Dam I can't wait to see what they do. My brother and I have been going back and forth, but nothings to "obvious" except the "quest/missions" look like they will have something to do with bringing the races together to fight (depending on your paragon/renegade choices thru both games IE: rachni, geth, council). Just a guess though.

  • @Kl1n3 I love Mass Effect, but their non-Citidel related side missions suck. They just feel like an afterthought. he real meat of the game is in the main quest and side missions like this. I love the exchanges here, they range from interesting to amusing. If only the side missions incorperated more dialogue conversations and a more robost variety of maps, they would feel more complete.

  • @jstephenj Just finished up ME2 again recently, and from what I can gather...ME3 is going to be huge (if its just a trilogy). I mean, paragon your running around gathering all the help (my guess, Dragon age thing...we'll help if you do this scenario). Bur for renegade you'll be using the tech you salvaged from the base at the end (gathering materials and testing). But I could be wrong, heres hoping that the quest are all story based in some way (giving them more dialog and feeling).

  • @happosai27 If you think about it, 2011 isn't so far off. I mean, I've been waiting for Half Life 2 EP3 for years. ME3 is going to come out in about 2 years. That's pretty quick for such a highly detailed video game.

  • @happosai27 i kno right, i jus played this game for like the 5th time because imma impatient mufucka..lol..but i realized sumthing i think that the reapers might be trying to prolong life actually, reason being listen to what soveren said "we impose order on organic life" also "we are each a nation independant, free of weakness" and then you find a human reaper? and harbinger said "we are your salvation", and it would be a good twist..but who kno's..lol..

  • @happosai27 you could always replay 1 and 2 hehe

  • this conversation made 5 words go through my head constantly:

    "The legend of the Protheans"

  • I don't know if any form of media will ever give me all the emotions of these two games

  • This was my favourite conversation in the first game. The music, the dialogue, the visuals. It was the moment where it all finally made sense. Such a gre

  • this is avansome, mass effect 2 do not have soul like first van!

  • Perhaps..perhaps the reapers are doing this out of kindness. Maybe, somehow the survival of organic life would eventually result in the destruction of the galaxy or something, and the reapers constantly cull organic life to ensure that it would continue to exist through the ages.

  • That cannot be, sovereign himself says that organic life is a mistake. He says it with some contempt. If your statement were true it would be more logical to extinguish the galaxy of all life, not just advanced organisms. No the reapers need organic life for some reason, perhaps it is how they power themselves, through the constant harvesting of galactic civilisation.

  • @Chingsauce

They bring up why the reapers continually do this cycle of mass genocide, its because they need organics in order to reproduce. It takes a massive amount of organics to create one reaper. it is how they reproduce. They need to destroy organics in order for their own survival.

  • guys could the reapers be from the future? could this theory explain why they know so much about the races of the universe? could this explain why they're so technologically advanced? wouldn't it be easy to travel back in time and sweep and check everything you wish? Knowing what will happen next, through the centuries. Somehow, Shephard has something to do with causing a problem for them.

  • I am not trying to bash the console players in anyway but you guys should try this on pc the sound quality and graphic fidelity only add to the experience

  • Ilos was the most encompassing of the worlds in mass effect

for me it and virmire are the two worlds that really sucked me into this game

    especially illos

what a profound experience only rivaled by fallout 3

  • Question: Vigil said the Reapers took all resources and technology with them. Why didn't the Reapers take the beacons?

  • i would asume they have to do with the citadels mas relay, when they travel the galaxy to wipe everyone out, it would be nice to have them to make it quick... :)

  • They left bits and pieces of Prothean tech to let the next generation of advanced organic life believe that the mass relays/citadel were created by the Protheans. Anything which depicted the true fate of the protheans was removed (with the exception of the becons, and the reapers had no way of knowing that there were any Protheans left to send out a distress signal after they left, and even then, none of the reapers would have been able to "read" the becon because they were non-organic.

  • @MJSpiritual I think the beacons were send from Ilos, after the Reapers gone far and Sovrein hybernate.

  • @MJSpiritual

they probably didnt know where the beacons were. that's why when Sovereign came back he went looking for the beacons so he can find the conduit on Illos. Illos sent the warning through the beacons to try to save the surviving protheans, and since the reapers had no idea Illos existed, they had no knowledge of the beacons.

  • @MJSpiritual

It would be like trying to collect every grain of sand on a beach.

You can get a whole hell of a lot, but there will always be some left behind.

Its impossible to get all of it.

  • LOVE the theme, which is also the title theme its so......

sad and epic all at the same time.....

Its almost beyond a regular persons comprehension.....

  • Best moments of the game... :) Thanks for uploading!

  • univerzum mass effecta je nevjerovatan, najbolja prica, sountrack ikad u igrama uz mgs!

  • Possibly the fate of the Protheans? When the Reapers came, they were weakened from destroying the other species that may have lived. Just a theory.

  • Wow, you just acted like a jackass there. BTW, by me saying "just A theory" implies that I have many. So what was the point of your reply?

  • I never thought you "gave a fuck" to my theories. And that wasn't much of a secret, it was quite a crapy one of you think of that as a secret. You want to know my opinion about your theory? It is sheer example of your ability to blurt out the obvious, it enspires me.

  • it's melancholy you can almost feel the pain of the protheians and vigil's desperate hope

  • The history in this game is awesome! <3

  • Yes it is.

What does it make you think?

  • Who voices Vigil? He has an amazing voice!

  • Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any info. In all the places Ive looked everyone wants to know but there's no word yet from The Man.

  • This game is sooo much better on PC.

  • Probably my favorite part of the game.

My only problem is that if they were running low on power, why not wake up the non-essential staff and have them try to forage for food, or at least give them a chance instead of pulling the plug?

  • That to risky as the Reapers stayed for centuries looking for all life may have survived their genocid. As the planet detriorated in its isolation maybe there was anyway to less food.

  • Because there were still Reapers out and about, harvesting and doing whatever they do to Organics. Vigil explains he only released them when he knew for certain that the Reapers were gone. He was given the mission to keep all of them in stasis until such a time came to pass when the Protheans could leave safely enough.

  • When Shepard is talking to Sovereign, he explains that the Reapers have no beginning, or end, they just ... are.

  • And that is a perfect enemy. An enemy that you cannot understand means what they can do is practically unlimited. An unknowable enemy is a perfect enemy.

  • Agreed.

  • Reminds me of Halo 1, back when the covenant were scary...

  • Back when the covenant were scary? ha, thats funny

  • @Godzilla1954Forever Definitely.

  • @hatter0501 No he didn't say it. I just think that is what it takes to make a perfect enemy.

  • @RequiemAngel666

Which is frustrating. Having finished ME2, you know that the Reapers must have had some sort of beginning, creators even.

Damn it, they better answer these questions in ME3.

  • I found the part where you find out that the citadel is an inactive mass relay that links beyond the milky way galaxy's horizon into a vast dark void of empty stars very interesting and wonder if it will show of what it would look like of the Reapers being out there in Dark Space in the next Mass Effect game.

  • Comment removed

  • NIce story, but full of holes. What is the point of the Conduit? As a Spectre, Saren could have just sneaked into the Citadel's main control room to open the mass relay for the Reapers. All that fuss to find this "back door" (an entire game's worth, in fact), when he could have just sneaked on. And he could have done it when he wasn't being hunted yet, when he was still a Spectre.

  • He didn't know what it was yet, but Sovereign was in no hurry, as Vigil tells us.

Sovereign had learned that the Protheans had screwed with the system, and wanted to make sure that the Conduit wasn't some form of sabotage or dangerous weapon.

Also Sovereign needed to open it himself for some reason. You'll notice in the end that Saren wasn't the one busy opening the relay. It was Sovereign.

  • This was a really depressing story to listen to. Yet I love listening to it.

  • Favorite scene and bg music

Mass Effect is deep, spacey and melancholic.

Thats what makes a good game, you emotionally bond to it.

So hard to find games like this these day

  • melancholic is a good word. This scene and the music made me extremely sad..

  • I felt bad for the Protheans. They were the most advanced alien civilization and suddenly they were brutaly slaughtered by the Reapers and never seen again in years. It's a very tragic and sad history :(

  • I feel worse for the Indoctrinated Slaves the Reapers left behind, they were the only Protheans left (excluding Ilos) and they all died from starvation or exposure.

  • this coversation tells you of the massacre of the Protheans, and explains a LOT about the Reapers and the story.

  • saddest and also the most awesome part of the whole game

  • This was a great part. It gives you more meaning to stop the Reapers. According to Vigil, it seems the Reapers underestimated the Protheans. Though they were still wiped out. But if they were able to stop (or at least halt) the cycle, then they were a smart race.

  • wow vigil has a really sad voice

  • But very soothing, as well.

  • I dont think so NDNCABOOSE. I think the reaper would destroy or indoctrinate everything like they did with the protheans

  • what i meant is that the humans would have an extra 50000 years of freedom, but in the mass effect universe humans are there for 30 years and all of a sudden reapers come back

  • if humanity hadn't found the prothean cache in mars, they would have been safe from the reapers, by the time the reapers had gone back into dark space, the humans would have the prothean tech later and be free to take over the galaxy.

  • Naw, their fate would've been exactly the same as the Protheans. They may have been safe for awhile as they weren't at the same technological advancement as the Protheans beforehand but once they were at that point the Reapers would've destroyed them like the thousands of races beforehand.

What can break the cycle is the ability of one of these races to communicate with the other in retrospect. In doing so they impart knowledge of their enemy that otherwise they would be ignorant of.

  • Also... The small " Data Cache" found in Mars was close to earth. I'm sure the Reapers would have scanned it and notice that Humans are evolving and are a threat.

  • the Reapers only attack worlds which are listed in the citadel.

  • Its so sad, Vigil was the last sign from the Prothean civilisation with the last thoughts of a important Prothean. You have died but your thoughts live in a computer for thousends of years until the power wen't off.

Imagine the hopelessness and desperation the Protheans did suffer, they could do nothing just die. There were no other civilisations they could have asked for help, they were fully alone against the Reapers. This Part is so intense, beautiful, tragic something one can't forget...

  • Really true. Beautiful and sad part of the best game ever!

  • I thought this conversation was one of the coolest story parts of the game. And Vigil's voice is pretty awesome too. I don't know why. It just sounds cool.

  • I love this part of the game. The graphics on this level actually really made me feel like I was really there speaking with Vigil. The music made it even better. I had this game along with many others robbed from me at gunpoint. I miss this game...I really got into it. I hardly ever get into games this long.

  • Dude, u got robbed out of your games? That blows.

  • It's kind of sad because from the sounds of it they were only a few generations away from being on par with the reapers technologically.

The reapers show and and are like "whoops" because theres a second citadel they can't control that links to dozens of prothean made mass relays :P

  • best voice-overs ever.

  • I liked Sovereign's voice better personally. But Vigil was nice for an AI system and a good one at that.

  • I find Vigil's voice to be soothing.

  • this encounter had a subtle, yet also epic feeling to it. I'll never forget it.

  • You and me both, buddy.

  • Yup, because it was a true race against time. Defying the fate of trillions probably before the birth of humanity. In one planet you approach an orb and find cromagnum man encountering Sovereign as if he was observing Earth.

  • actually it wasn't sovereign the hunter saw. according to the text the hunter was briefly captured and implanted with a recording device by the Prothians. I don't think sovereign was even thinking about humans at that point. Its mistake.

  • The image you were described though mentions a ship with fingers an a noise that could rang through the head. It's also stated Sovereign had been around for sometime to monitor development quite possibly to see how well sentient life progressed before the eradication period would commence.

  • my message doesn't mention sovereign. the hunter wakes up with a small painful lump in their skull and sees a strange "bird" flying away. they go about their usual business, sometimes with a vague sense another is watching. some time later they're captured again on a long solo hunt. after coming to Shepard understands the hunter was implanted with a prothian data recorder and wonders how long they watched and what they learned. maybe there's different messages before and after virmire.

  • Weird. But that would mean that there are survivors but I was under the impression they had all but died out unless those who reached the Citadel from Illos may have managed to find transportation and visit other planets?

Either way there are two of those modules, the one I found was activated by the consort's gift.

  • on Eletania, the planet with the space monkeys? so was mine if it was. it might be that or its possible a few isolated pockets might also have survived. or this took place before the attack and sovereign only concentrated on those who had reached the designated level of development. which makes sense- if ALL life is destroyed the cycle cant continue.

  • I just checked the ruin on eletania and it gives the same message. are you sure it mentions the noise and fingers? if so where was it?

  • Hm not sure. Something about it made me think it was but it's been a bit so I'm probably thinking something else.

  • well it mentions a red "eye" when the hunter is recaptured and that it seems to be watching them. several of the colonists on eden prime mention the noise so maybe thats it if you haven't played in a while.

  • "for millions of yeaz" is he from '50s NY? LoL

  • I was hoping that there would be like one Prothean dude left over that you could speak to.... they look pretty cool in the statues .... the extinction vision thing was awesome.

  • that woulda been cool. . .bet they woulda been insane looking.

  • It would have, but it would have been a whole new kind of twist. The idea is that nothing survived. The fact that there are no Protheans left only makes it more necessary for Sherpar to complete his/her goal. And, apparently, the Protheans were WAY more advanced than this civilization is. If creatures who were nearly able to duplicate Reaper tech. were completely wiped out, imagine what they would have done to us.

  • Shepard*

  • true

  • this is one of my Fav moment in the game, so sad to hear the prothean's true fate.
