  • great

  • ive got my module one on thursday but taking the test on there bike i am doing my restricted test will i be doing this on a 125cc bike thanks

  • why is it, I feel more comfortable driving on my own on the roads than taking this part of the test :/, I can do all of this but I feel so nervous that I will probablly mess up

  • @buzincarl You know you can do it, your instructor knows you can do it you just have to show the examiner. It should be a formality. The Examiner expects you to pass and he wants you to pass. Try to relax and show him what you can do.

Think of it as a practice, If you don't pass the worst that will happen is you do it again And it costs you £15.50. Not the end of the world. The more relaxed you can be the better chance you will have.

  • Hi thanks for the video. Is this done at burgess Hill MPTC?? If so could you help me out as i have been trying to find it on google maps but the address people keep giving me does not work and put the pointer on a factory in an industrial estate.

  • @menormice2 Sorry cant help with that , this is not Burgess hill.

  • im 100% sure he was mean to go through the blue cones befor you do the figure of eight.....................

  • getting nervous just thinking of booking my test lol

  • You should not be doing the motorcycle test until you have had enough experience on a bike to be able to ride it properly. Part of that is knowing when to change gear. On most bikes, some of this is best done in third gear.

  • this might sound like a stupid question but if you havent been on a motor bike before, when your doing this module 1 ,how do you know if you just stay in first gear (for the hole module) or go into second gear?

  • @stuthedigger ..sorry .of course you take lessons before you do the first module.stupid me.lol

  • You are correct, there could have been more observation during the pushing element.

This is the best video we have showing all the elements, and we cannot get into MMA to do it again. Your ATB will explain exactly what you need to do and why the observation is important.

  • I am being told I should do left and right life saver when pulling away this guy did not and he did not look all around when pushing the bike

  • Hi I have mine soon, is there any let up in the required speed for the avoidance and emergency stop if the ground is wet?

are you allowed to go side to side on the slow riding part to go slower?

and finally how many minors are you allowed to incur and what will you incur a minor for doing?

    Thanks :)

  • @yamahajames91 the 50kph speed requirement is regardless of the weather , but if conditions are not safe the test will not go ahead.

The walking speed part should be done in a straight line.

You could get 5 less serious faults. and you will get them for anything that is not quite good enough.

  • i was just wondering how far apart the cones are for the slalom theres a disused carpark by me and i was gonna do a bit of practice with my cones on there before my test thank you :)

  • @classicrockhahaha about 14 feet The DSA measure it in foreign for some reason

  • @smartridertraining Thank you :)

  • I passed my Mod 1 3 days ago, locked my back wheel up on the emergency stop ^_^ It was wet, passed still though cos i controlled it to a stop as expected. Mod 2 today.

  • @smartridertraining - I do indeed realise that, but thanks for checking.

I didn't make myself clear - the bike schools I called wanted to give me a few hours' training before my Mod 1 test, which was in the region of £85-£90. I can understand why - they wanted to be sure I was ready rather than taking my word for it, but I just couldn't justify that for a 10 minute test I'm afraid.

I'm glad it worked out - I'm going to do my Mod 2 through a bike school though to make sure I'm ready.

  • Thanks for this video. This, and others like it, helped me pass my Mod 1 this morning. I have done about 10k miles in the last year since my CBT so I decided not to do it through a bike school. I just did plenty of research on YouTube and DSA website then I borrowed a friend's Bandit to do my test.

It went well despite my nerves - my only fault was being 2km/h too slow on the hazard avoidance. They let me do it again though. So it's possible to spend just £15.50 on the test, not £90ish!

  • @stucookson Congratulations. Glad our video helped. but Hopefully you realise that that is only module 1. You have still to do the module 2 which is the road ride and the fee is £75.00. So you have not passed your test for £15.50 It will cost you a total of £90.50.

  • @stucookson hi mate

im gona do my practical soon , after this module , do i have to do a practical test on the roads with trafic aswell?

    thanks

oh btw congrats on passing :)

  • @1fancyblood

    Yes you do i'm afraid.

  • @stucookson

I also did it with no bike school since I've been riding for almost 2 years. Passed first time for only £15.50 instead of spending £100 for training, the way I see it, if you fail, that is your training! xD I have mod 2 today which is £75 Again with no training.

  • I hope this new government scraps this test, Mainly because its unsafe in the wet and there are less test centre's for people which means L riders having to travel further distances to to take there test. And longer waiting lists aswell...

  • @kd84afc this test is very safe in the wet i passed my test in a heavy down pour the bike did not slip at all

  • @cruellordsoth well some aint so lucky I have read people have come off in the wet doing the swerve part of the test..

  • @cruellordsoth google the swerve test mate and you find theres alot of people wanted it to be scrapped because people have come off in the wet and broken arms

  • Thats one wide fig 8 mate

  • @2wheelsteve you can use as much room as you like for the figure of 8

  • i was told that, but have read on another utube video, that someone failed for taking it to wide, and allso on the reversing bike in parking space does it matter how many turns it is done in,got my mod 1 monday, not looking forward to it,

  • I failed my mod 1 miserably yesterday but am so glad that I found this demonstration, it makes more sense to see exaclty what is expected of you. I didn't have a clue what I needed to do until I took the test and of course failed it as I couldn't complete the figure 8 - I have had no practise so can understand why i failed, but will try again now that I have see this video, so thanks very much. Lin

  • hey man what gear do you to go around the circuit? got me a brand new ybr :-)

  • clearly you use 1st gear for the slow bits, but we find 3rd best for the swerve and emergency stop

  • How far apart are the cones? I'm at work this weekend on night shifts and there's a big open car park to practice all this. Is there any information anywhere which tells you the exact positions of all the cones?

    thanks

  • the layout and measurement was on the dsa site

  • is this the same as a CBT ?

  • @WillTaylor29

No CBT is compulsory basic TRAINING.

    This is a TEST.

  • If I got a bike which had a 50cc engine then built and installed a 125cc engine and changed the V5 document so that the motor has a 125cc engine on documentation, could I do a Category A test?

Which means you can ride a motor bike for two year that has less than 33BHP and then after anything.

  • @Blunder1248 Never heard of anyone doing that, Lot of hassle, but don't see why not, provided that it is a learner legal 125 ( not more than 14.5 Bhp) and it is capable of 62mph. You can be sure that if you turn up on a strange concoction of a bike the examiners would look at it closely.

  • @smartridertraining

As sad as it sounds i really want to custom build a Honda Monkey bike, but i would like to know if its possible to do a test on one if it has a 125cc engine and like you say reach 62 mph.

  • @Blunder1248 That will be a strange thing that the examiners would look at closely. I would advise asking the DSA.

I dont know but I would expect that it will be hard to get it through a MSVA.

    Have Fun.

  • Guys, don't be fooled. This test is piece of cake. I can't believe how easy it is. The cones are miles apart. Just jump on the bike and nail it guys. Good luck everyone.

  • passed yesterday, no minors at the sthelens centre on a honda ls125r. you have much more space than the video makes out, cb 500 here i come :)

  • Might have wanted to zoom out on swerve part !?

  • So do you have to take this test to get a motorcycle lisense.

  • @thumbus2003 yes

  • Regarding making sure you put your left foot down first, a little trick my instructor told me was...Look Left, left foot down. Look right, Right foot down. So every time I stop I glance left.

Another trick he taught me to keep my feet up when doing the slow part is..Head Up, feet Up...Head down, feet down.

    This worked for me anyway.

Just had a thought, if you see somebody going through town slowly looking up to thier left then it will probably be me.

Good luck with Module 1 and 2.

  • Ok noob rider here, on a direct access can you use your own bike if you have a output power of atleast 35kW or do you have to pay for one to rent on the test?

  • It does not matter who owns the bike as long as it is insured for the person riding it.

However you cannot ride it unless you are accompanied by and in radio contact with a DAS qualified instuctor

  • nice to look back and know i passed it in july 09

  • and one more thing is that i need to get in the habit with stopping with my left foot on the floor as when i had an accident before coz of a car pulling out on me i couldnt put my left foot down for a while lol. happen to know any tricks for getting into the habit of doing it ?

  • No trick to it. You just need to think about it as you come to a stop, it will soon become a habit and you will do it without thinking

  • Yes...when you stop look slightly left.

    Look left ..left foot down

    Look right...Right foot down.

    Worked for me.

  • Hmmm, im kinda sh****** myself coz im doing my bike test soon and its guna cost alot of money and theres not really any ways i can think of to prepare myself for it. i mean ive brought a R6 because ive been on off road bikes with high Cc so im used to the power but its just the cone swerving and u turns that im worried about because i dont want to waiste all of that money and fail on such a silly thing :( any tips you could give me for the test ?? would be greatful :)

  • The best way to prepare is to get some training. and lots of practice.

The swerve is not difficult but the slow control for the slalom, figure of eight, u-turn and straight line needs understanding of how to do it and practice.

  • Ahhh ok thanks, but im ok with slow control with the cones just a little worried on the u turn coz my friend said he got blown by some wind and had to put his foot down instead of falling over and he got instantly failed so i think i should practice that a little

  • @RaSxDronex I failed my module 1 today :o( hit a cone with right foot on the swerve test. Trouble is, I watched too many videos and confused myself - I tried to do a straightish line through the cones and hit one with my brake foot (which was sticking out cos I was worried about lighting the brake light too much!). One tip: don't book Module 1 and 2 together cos if u fail M1, you lose the money u spent on the M2.

  • is this on the cone weaving on the hazard avoidance ?

  • @RaSxDronex Yeah. It was a left hand circuit and I tried to go through the swerve at a straigtish line - mistake. That's what I mean - I was doing it fine in practise then I messed up after watching YouTube videos! Best thing is to pay for the extra practise and dont let your nerves get to you. Says me who failed! My next one is next week.

  • ahhh okk. well good luck for that :) i got my theory in like 1 and half weeks or so. i think the theory is quite easy myself. but my mate told me the test is pretty straight forward but now ive only gotta practice my slow riding. i mean i can slow ride at 10 mph and even 5 but lower than 5 and i start loosing balance. but i mean ive got 2 months to practice.

  • @RaSxDronex You can use your back brake to help in the slow riding bit - the examiner can't see you anyway!

I found theory test simple, and hazrd perception, but I've been driving cars for a long time. Theory: just practise - if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you can get a Theory Test App, maybe on your computer too. Riding slow's fine - you don;t have to stay on a very precise straight line.

  • ahhh okk. yes ive done the practice tests and i get like 48 / 50 and 49 / 50 but its just the stupid questions like "how does riding a bike harm the environment" its like

    what the hell.

    lol

anyway i gotta ride slow on the bike i have at the moment coz ive got a new front tyre so ill use that time to practice for the test.

but good luck for next week :)

  • Hi guys. Quick question. Do most centres supply a motorcycle for this test? Like they did for the cbt? Or would that cost extra? Also! If they don't supply it could I use an untaxed bike as it's all done off road. Thanks in advance :)

  • We would supply a bike for all of the training and testing. cost of the bike hire is included in the training fees.

I expect all other training centres would do the same.

  • Sounds great, thanks for the response

  • most instructors will provide a bike for this test.

even though the test is off road, you will still have to have a valid mot and tax certificate for the machine (in Northern Ireland anyway) as well as producing a valid theory test certificate and (In the UK I believe) a valid CBT pass certificate too

hope this helps! and remember your chances of passing your motorcycle test are much higher when you pay for decent instruction, 'forewarned is forearmed' as they say!

    good luck with the test

  • Passed today! Nearly got the test cancelled due to rain (f*ing pouring down it was!) but then cleared a bit and off I went. It's much easier than I thought. At my riding school they have an off road cone layout just like the test but smaller, with every cone closer than the test, when we got there we were like, wow, this is huge!! So it was damn easy!! Got 61km/h on hazard avoidance and 71km/h (!!!) on emergency stop!

YAY I passed! What a feeling! Now Mod2 next week!!

  • whatever this guy does in the video!!!!!!!!!!!.........thats what your suppose to do idiots...........isnt this why you are watching the goddamn video.........

  • I Passed today :). I would never want to do this test again!

  • mdapro77 no you dont! life save twice over your right shoulder or opersite side to the kerb your next to,.

  • When you perform the U-Turn, do you have to use the indicators?

  • No, just do a very good shoulder check before you go!

  • I had a H-100 ages ago ...after kicking it over one day i failed to notice the kickstart went up my jeans leg ....as i aproached a junction i came to a very controled stop and tried to put my right leg down but it didnt budge and i just fell over onto my side ...slight pain but massive ego bruise . : /

  • I was just wondering a few things:

If you lock up the back brake during an emergency stop but you keep the bike under control, would you fail it?

Is a 125cc 4 stroke import with a top speed of 50mph fast enough for this test?

How many attempts do you get at this test?

    Thanks

  • if you lock the wheel you have not got the bike under control. so yes you would fail, you might not fail ( but you would get a fault) if it was only a very short skid.

You cannot take the standard bike test unles your 125cc bike can do 100kph (about 60 mph)

you can take the test as many times as you like. But you should not really take it until you are capable of passing it.

  • Ok thanks, 1 more thing. Do you have to look around before moving off each time you stop on this course because it's clear to me there's no threat of pedestrians or cars. Is it just for good practice or could you fail for not being observant?

  • You must do this test as if you were on the road , so yes you must look all around you before you move each time, including before you go into or out of the manovering area. The test starts as soon as you come out of the office it is not only in the fenced off area.

  • your not meant to lock up the wheel, so i think that is a fail.

you need 50kmph for the test, so yes your bike is probably fine, check with your test center.

you have as many attempts as you like, moudle 1 is £10, module 2 £70.

  • I have recently completed my training for this module and the bloke who was training me said my motorbike would be fine for both module 1 and 2 in terms of speed, he told me that its not how fast your bike is but how well you demonstrate to the tester that you can ride it safely and with a certain amount of stability. He also told me that locking the back wheel up at any time during the emergency stop would be a fail and that if I feel uncomforable about it I should practice it in a safe place.

  • I don't think your allowed to skid because its not classed as controlled. why don't you just use there 500cc, but you proberly wouldnt go over 50 depending on your area why not contact your local test center?

  • I failed because I locked up the back wheel for about 3-4 metres. Still controlled stop but i wasn't in full control of the bike so it's a fail. Other than that, I got a minor for taking the figure 8 too wide so keep that in mind.

  • Unfounded nerves! Test is an absolute dodle! Got my module 2 booked :)

  • I got my module 1 2moro, well today technically ( its 1:00 in the morning lol) Proper nervous, Just worried my Honda NSR 125 will be ok for the U turn and everything as its a MUCH longer wheelbase than say a cg125 which is EASY to do a U turn on :S

  • passed mine today in rotherham i were rate nervous waiting round to do it,mod 2 on wedneday.

  • The swerve test is to prepare you for 2 things, these are:

    1. When you are riding on the road, and a vehicle unexpectedly pulls too far out over a junction, thus the swerve can be carried out to maneuver around the vehicle safely.

    2. When there is a parked vehicle on the road which is about to pull out unexpectedly at the last minute or is pulling out without using indicators, you may need to swerve around it to avoid collision.

    Hope this helps.

  • passed it at last !!! wasnt as easy dont be complacent

  • passed at Atherton much better venue than the Chadderton site - People are nicer also thanks to chris at LTL rider training i was /am a total novice and he got me through it - what a guy

  • Passed it on Thursday with no minors. It really aint that difficuilt as long as you have a bit of practice with your instructor.

  • I agree I did my test before this one come in, And to be honest while talking to alot of the instructors its just another way of making money, And the swerve part is quite stupid really and i read alot of people have falling off doing it.

  • I'd imagine this is heck of a lot easier on a 125. I ride a 125, but took my DAS back in sep lst yr on a 500. the 500 was a bitch for u-turns in tight roads. Not sure what its like for swerve though. When I got back on my 125, although I thought the throttle was broken (so little power!), I really did apreciate the control advantages.

  • im 17 and passed this first time, im the only person to do it with not one minor in my area, got 56kph for swerve and 55 for emergency stop, mod 2 next week. honestly its not hard but having a oractice sesh is worth doin, good luck guys

  • he missed the first cone on the figure of eight!

  • @pigeonwing1

yep i noticed that too ! FAIL ! lol

  • its taken me 4 weeks to be able to sit my module 1 :( - Doing it in 30 mins

  • I need to rebook mine, I failed on the old test because I crossed a 45 doign 55 after coming off the A38, I knew that the sign was there but i still managed to miss it.

Although my test was done on a really rainy day, it was horrible because I didn't own one of those neck thingys, - All the rain just went down my jacket and i got soaked. I also had to have the visor open a squidge because i wear glasses and i kept steaming up really bad :(

    I'll try again soon :D

  • i passed my Test 1 a month ago, passed 1st time. One my first attempt i was 1 mph too slow for the swerve manouvre, the examier let me do it again and i managed to do it. Then two weeks later i passed my module Two. Now im riding my Kawasaki ZX6R !! Woohoo,,,good luck guys !!! P.S: Wet or Dry weather shouldnt really make a big difference as you only need to reach like 31mph for the swerve.

  • Any advice for module Two? thanks

  • Does the rain have any effect on the playground eg does it make it harder for the swerve? I have my module one next week and failed yesterday due to 46kph instead of 50kph through the swerve to avoidance. The weather is scheduled for a wet day and so I'm hoping that the rain does not affect my performance. Anyone had any problems in the rain? feedback greatly appreciated!

  • The DSA say that the surface of the testing area is designed to give maximum traction so there should not be any problems in the rain.

I have to say that this video was done in january on a very cold wet day and the surface had not been used much, The only problem we had was that it had not been swept and there was a lot of tree debris ( twigs etc). The surface will be better now so it should not cause a problem.

  • Ahh awesome, sorry it just worried me up coz id heard about all the accidents that have been reported (bad times) and obviously didnt want to suffer the same stuff! Thanks for the reply its boosted the confidence up a notch =D

  • i booked my test today and it's on this friday, just after 2 days, i hope i'll pass it

  • Good luck mate,

I failed my test just before the new one came out, I've got to re-do it now with the new test :( Can you let me know how it goes please? - I'd apprciate any help you could give me afterwards lol!

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • I passed mine yesterday failed the old test on the u-turn, had to wait for ages before taking the new test, failed that for not going quick enough.

Advice as soon as you come out of the corner line yourself up with the "avoidance cone" then fucking hoof it in second!

  • failed it mate, can you imagin how you would feel if you were doing 47kmph instead of 50?

my advise is that don't slow down when you are turning towards the spped trap, and as soon as you are upright just look at the cones where you have to swerve don't look at your meter or the speed trap, keep it in second gear and give it full acceleration.

  • Cheers for this. Got a cancellation for today with no chance of practicing this. Watched the vid before and sailed through!

  • In sweden we have had the swerve test since before EU.

We do it in a closed driving yard for safety.

I think the swerve test is really good, since if you can't swerve in a low speed like 50 kph, maybe you shouldn't drive a MC or do some more training...

(Swerving really can save the the life of the driver and other persons in the traffic around him/her)

  • what happened to the observations when reversing the bike??? tut tut tut

  • You are right, no observation. Our excuse is we were rushing to make the clip.

But it also makes the point, that becouse you are in a locked compound and you know there is nothing around it is very easy to forget the observation.

You must do all the exercises in the yard as if you were on the road.

  • I have to do this test in a week, just read the MCN story about the test candidate crashing - I think that everything but the swerve test is fine. it proves you can still do the things you were taught on your CBT - nobody told me that I would have to swerve around hazards????? I thought i would see them in the distance and avoid them with control or slow down not hammer it closer to the hazard and then swerve! its stupid and teaches you bad habits. I want to be proactive not reactive ! CRAP

  • Did u pass the new test?

  • Did you pass, i hope you passed!!??

  • This new test is a crock of shit! Glad I did my 'old style' test a couple of years ago. As other post have said, they should conduct the test on the road rather than doing a closed road.

  • They can't. In Europe they do it on a live road. Thing is 50KPH is 32MPH. In order to do it in England the DSA would have to allow candidates to brake the speed limit (you are allowed an extra 10% of the speed limit so up to 33mph on this kind of road) but the DSA can't be seen to advocate this, so They've had to build these test centres just for the job.

  • did it this morning on a 125. the only hard part is the swerve. just make sure you do the bend quickly and accelerate out like mad (if you're on a 125).

  • Don't forget that's the instructor doing the test, and he's going to make it look easier than it really is. Did you read in MCN about the rider breaking his leg on 50km/h serve on one of the first of these new tests?......

  • broken arm not leg. highsided. Passed my test in september just in time b4 this crappy test came through

  • Looks easy enough. Don't know what all the fuss is about.

Although they can do as much slow speed training as they like in a closed yard but it's not going to teach road sense which is where thy should be concentrating their efforts.

A much longer on road test like a cbt on steroids would be better.

  • Thank you - not as difficult as we'd all expected!

  • Nice One. Being able to visualise the new test makes the whole thing far less intimidating. In fact, it looks quite simple.

  • cheers for this. good to see what i'l be expecting for my test soon.

  • thanks for this
