  • I love the old player pianos. The roll is basically the same as the old punch card computers they used in the 80's ( google it, it's fascinating). So in essence, the piano is running a program.

  • fuck i was reading tv tropes when suddenly i got here...

  • Neat-o!

  • I have a sudden urge to ride a unicycle...

  • The dots on the left and right control how loudly the music plays, and are hard to read. The notes, however, are easy to read.

  • 1899? This music is older than dirt. It's still a popular classic, though. Where did you find this? Or perhaps you played it on your own piano?

  • would anyone dare to come up forth and put the piece of meat into the lion's mouth?

  • Amazing. I haven't seen one of these since I was a kid.

  • What happened to that poor player piano roll at 2:04?!

  • What was what thing? I'll be happy to reply if I know what question you have.

  • what is that thing?

  • @wirechair

Before the digital age, auto-playing pianos used those to play. Where ever there's a hole, the piano will play a note. Lines mean extended play. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it's essentially physical binary; gaps and faces are like 0s and 1s.

  • @OvaNineThousand

  • Fantastic, fabulous, fanciful, phantasmagoric Foo-chick! Thank you!

  • Did the gladiators enter in an exploding car?

  • I LOVE THOSE PIANOS! my grandfather used to have one, sadly he no longer does.

  • You'd need a lot of fingers to actually play that o.O

  • What is the name of this instrument?"

  • @paxtofettel

    a pianola

  • @Jonmiehe This is a test

  • I think that when you refer to the top and bottom notches, you may be talking about notes 1 through 4 and notes 85 through 88. I have all 8 of these holes closed off when I am playing a Duo-Art roll. For playing a Welte Mignon roll, I will turn on note 4, and when playing an Ampico roll I can turn on notes 3 and 4. If I play a Hupfeld Triphonola roll, then I turn on notes 1, 2, 3 and 4. I can turn on the high notes too, but since they are so rarely played, I almost never turn them on.

  • This is way to cool..thankyou for posting this!
