I'm sorry but I dont like his swing. Open clubface at the top causes no weight shift and early release to save the shot, that's why you see that he overcrosses the hands past impact. This is why he lacks consistency despite his great trempo
@danic18: I love it when people breakdown Ernie's swing and say it's this or that that makes him inconsistent. OK, Duval has a shut club face at the top and rotates his body to hold off the release, how's that working out these days? Grant Waite is another good one, let's see if there is any Grant Waite footage out here on youtube... of course it would have to be shot on the Egolf Tour these days. How about Vijay's release, what do you think of that, is that good or bad? Ernie is sick good!

But you wouldn't argue that he's playing as well as he did 8-12 years ago, would you? I personally love the guy and root for him every time I see him. Main problem now is that he doesn't make every single 6-footer he looks at on major championship greens, which he came pretty close to doing in the '90s and early 00's. As for his swing, that little bounce move, the opening of the angle at the top just as he starts down, appears and disappears, and he plays best when it's gone.
Having said that, I don't mean that he sucks, obviously. It's the difference between being potential #1 in the world and being merely one of the 20 or 30 best players in the world. It's not a lot.
I mean, his swing always looks great tempo-wise, but he really does get outside it a shade more with the right side than he used to. Also, you can see just a bit of that cast move at the start of the downswing that's been giving him fits since the surgery (don't have any idea why, or whether, the injury would've caused the move--just saying it happened around the same time). Check the younger swings and you'll see the difference.
pure poetry.....sooo close at the us open this year...i was holding out for a tiger phil ernie playoff on monday...that would have been EPIC at pebble....sayyyy does anybody know what that island mountain in the background is? I used to know its name but i forgot.
That woulda been some playoff, alright. Ernie's shown some signs of rounding into form for the past few months. I hope it keeps getting better for him.
As for the Open, the right guy won. He was the only guy who played like he intended to win the damn thing from #1 through #18 all day Sunday. (Not saying that just because he's a fellow Irishman, either.)
@emncaity yeah he played great. I am a PGA teaching professional from Charlotte, NC. I teach for a company called GolfTEC, and I'm a big fan of your work, especially the stuff from the Masters. You should get in touch with the big wigs at GolfTEC corporate in Denver. I'm sure they'd be interested in buying the rights to these vids and putting them in our tour player footage database that goes along with our teaching software. GREAT VIDEOS.

@emncaity
Still, I agree, we're talking about a pinch here and there. Even a great swing with some minor problems to work out is still a great swing.
