Ive got that problem too, i feel my shoulders rounding in. I never did deadlifts, only everything else, i benched press ALOT though. Thanks for the tip, i really want to improve my posture
I fell in love with dead lifts today. Your video series was great education for me. Also I like your attitude on becoming the strongest version of yourself. It really has inspired me a lot and definately made me get closer to the strongest me!
Hey Elliott,, Having problem with lower back pain.. its stopping me from deadlifting heavy/squatting etc. Ive been doing alot of stretching on the hip/back extensor/glutes.. alot of foam rolling. its on the right side of the lower back. What would you say be the best thing to get my self strong again,, I miss being able to lift heavy. Any tips would be most helpful!
U seem really intelligent in the science of workouts....i know a dead lift will increase mass and strength in legs, but can it increase your vertical for athletic sports?
Im 16 and can max deadlift around 450 at 235 body weight and i naturally have form like that but with all these extra small critical things i can change about my deadlift i think il be able to pull a lot more! Thanks i really enjoyed the series
Man i want to deadlift but i don't know if i am doing it real good. I am 1.98 but i have long legs...so well...it bend a lot more in my legs, that's oke right?
Full of key elements information to take your deadlift to the next level!
I just wanna know though, when i dead lift (conventional), i seem to have a slight pain in my coxis(tailbone) area. Would you know by any chance what the problem would be?
I'm 20 years old and I have a tendency to curl my back and shoulders when I'm standing up straight. My posture reminds alot about what you showed at 5:22 in the video.
would it straighten up my back and shoulders if I were to begin doing the exercise you did at 5:25?
elliot great series of videos...after about an 8 month hiatus in deadlifting i tried out all the tips today at the gym and managed to pull 425 for a triple...my previous personal best was 455 for a single at 18 all those months ago...now 19 hoping to pull 500+ with all the advice before i turn 20 in january thanks a lot!
Wow thank you so much for making this video! I'm going to show it to my friend, he needs to learn proper form since he's doing starting strength. I told him the most important thing is FORM FORM FORM!
Great series of videos! I'm completely new to deadlifting but I feel I understand it a lot better now. I'm about 6'3" and I was wondering if the bar should be any specific height off the ground? Right now I'm using home gym weights of 10lbs to load the bar so it is really close to the ground. Is this bad?
Thanks for these videos. A guy at the gym today told me I wasn't bending enough from the knees and that my back was way too round. Granted, my back was definitely too round and my shoulders were forward, but it's good to know I wasn't doing everything incorrectly. Keen to try those dead-holds.
i came on here to improve my quality of dead lifts and i have to say great set of vids man. i studied this stuff at uni and it is nice to see someone who has knowledge about the area and the science, instead of someone copying something they read off a poor article they googled.
Do you have any tips for tall people? I'm 6'4 and especially on the return movement i have to tip over quite far to get the bar over my knees and that's really stressfull on my lower back. Is that just something you'll get used to?
whenever i deadlift heavy i get pain in my lower back. i've gone for an x ray and it's been confirmed that my back pain is not due to a herniated disc. can you recommend anything that can alleviate this back pain? what is the most likely cause?
great videos man. I feel my deadlifts are pretty good but as a noob to deadlifting I will start to incorporate your dead holds to help balance me out. Love your videos and your no bullshit approach. You and matt wichlinski are my motivation to push heavy weight.
This series has really helped me. I realised that I have been doing deadlifts incorrectly(more of a squat with arse low to the ground). I'd love to see more videos on technique for other lifts, too. When I squat I tend to lean my upper body forward a little to shift the balance of weight and make it easier. It's really hard for me to avoid doing this when I try to lift in the below 12 rep range. I've been doing lower back exercises to help like 'supermans'. Always wanting to learn more.
This is the first time I heard anyone explain the Dead Lift so enthusiastically and with so much detail. I thought I was performing them correctly but now I see that I need to make a lot of adjustment.
I'm a former dancer and your explanation gave me a lot of information as to how to hold and move my body to perform the exercise, just like in class. There should be many others who should be teaching like you. Gladly, your offering valuable information. Your advice is superb. Thank you.
thanks for the reply in gerneral a really solid 4 part vid.... alot of really good info..and you touched on alot of things that alot of dead vids do not..
the series is good but it misses the point of the roundback deadlift that alot of world class lifter do. konstantine .anello. ano. almost all the conv fin pullers round this way... because it shortens the stroke...
@goku3018 there is some benefit to round back lifting... i lift stones and its ALL round back lifting when doing this. I may cover this in another video, thanks.
I am pretty new to deadlifting and i wonder: is there any problems to start deadlifting while still recovering from a torn/reconstructed ACL? the knee that i have a problem with is not stable to the point where i want it, but i feel that sooner or later i need to get in to shape, and i found a routine where you need to deadlift and squat a lot instead of running to get in shape
If i am not mistaken the kind of deadlift that you do where you dont dive down to a squat potition is a romanian deadlift and is great for sprinting strength....but the other deadlift greatly enhances your back's stamina.
When you drive feet into the ground , should it (center of gravity)be more towards center of heel or the medial arch of the foot or am I just splitting hairs?
@JoshSonsiadekDC i tell my athletes to push with "all 4 corners of the foot", i know that doesnt make sense but for some reason that cue works to have them push with the ENTIRE foot... i dont like too much heel or too much toe.
Elliot, when at the top of the movement, what do you really do? Do you pull your shoulders back (shoulder blades together), like in bench press? Or do you just put the chest up and don't move the shoulders?
@Mosly343 frankly.... its bull shit. you should be far more concerned with the processed food, environmental toxins, television / school / friends brainwashing and popular culture crap screwing up your teenagers mind and body than training with weights. ask a 7 year old kid that bales hay and carries 12 pound buckets of milk all day long if they're stunted in growth (sorry for the rant, touchy subject :)
Hi Elliot. I loved this video! Would have liked you to go into a bit more detail some places in the video but this was a great overall video that touched upon all the important parts of deadlifting!
I would like it if you made a video like this about the squat and the powerclean?
Also do you have any tips for athletes(such as me) who hyperextend(not round) their back when deadlifting an therefore have pain?
man thanks i wanted to start doing deadlift but i really didnt know how im a big strong guy who never lifted more then a dumb bell or bench bar when i was deadlifting it felt funny but i could alway get the weight up now with this info im sure i too can be beastly
Elliot, this was an awesome series. Would love to see one on the squat and bench press as well! By the way, I don't mind the cursing at all. I think it spices up the videos!
Elliot, could you show some excercises to correct donald duck, and gorrilla syndrome? i have a pretty bad case of both and my brother does too. when you were on your rant about gorrilla syndrome you were completely right. i feel like all my mechanics are fuckup up my breathin and my posture are too... i dont want to be fucked as an athelete playing football not being able to do shit right.
excellent series once again, as you mentioned there are correction exercises you can do for the lower cross? are you able to demonstrate or point in the right direction for mainly to help with tightness in the hip flexors as i find this may be my problem. thanks

Something you didn't mention is squeezing your back and abs. I noticed that by doing that, I can keep my back a lot straighter.

Try putting plates flat on the ground on each side to elevate the bar off the ground.

a couple questions,
how are we supposed to know a "20 degree bend in the knees"
when we get our feet under the bar, is until our shins touch the bar a good hip height?
Kevin3310 1 year ago
@Kevin3310 the best way is to get a coach who understands the dead lift.
strengthcamp 1 year ago 3
@Kevin3310 I actually have a simple answer for that one, just don't lock your knees, and dont start out in a squat position.
