He was never addicted to pain killers, he just used them for an extended period of time. He was in so much pain he couldn't record, he was always sick, he couldn't sing or perform, etc. so It's understandable that he took the painkillers. If you were in as much pain as him, you'd do the same. He was never addicted to them, he used them the way they are meant to be used.

Opiate withdrawal is hell,and if you are taking opiates daily for years like Tom, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY YOU WONT WITHDRAWAL when you stop.
