  • Strong recommendation: SEE TIM COATES' SHORT 13' PRESENTATION for the Isle of Wight - "IOW Libraries - Tim Coates' alternative vision" on YouTube. There is absolutely no justification to close down libraries until all these backroom cuts have been made!

  • "WE LOVE LIBRARIES: FLASHMOB" - official version - on YouTube

  • this is purely ideological - it illustrates the seething hatred and contempt that the Tories have for the working classes and ordinary (non-rich) people. The Lib Dems should hang their heads in shame. Who voted for these idiots? shame on you. If you didn't want to vote Labour then vote bloody Green!!!

  • Wonderful to hear from you in Israel but very sad to hear you are facing the same short-sighted destruction of libraries - by politicians in both countries who I suspect have not darkened the door of a library for some time.

  • Hello, I'm from Israel and the same phenomenon is occurring in my country. Due to budget cuts, the municipalities are closing public libraries all around the country. The politicians are claiming that there is lack of need for a public library., which is a lie. Simple as that.

They can't understand the importance of a public library has. A library represents culture, freedom, community life, democracy of knowledge, etc..

Good luck to you all, and I hope your movement will reach our shores too.

  • This film is intended to be a rallying call for all campaigns throughout Britain. We have used Somerset as our example - but the shocking roll-call of threatened libraries intentionally opens the film to all. Please tell friends and members of SAVE OUR LIBRARIES groups throughout the whole of the UK to see this film either here, or @ guardian.co.uk (Books Section), or @ welovelibraries.co.uk. Link to it or Embed it in your own webspaces and blogs. Get the message out there that all of us care.

  • This is LOVE OUR LIBRARIES day throughout the UK today. SIX HUNDRED libraries are still under threat of closure or of having their opening hours lopped. The service that has taken 100 years to grow and serve the public is going to be ripped up and irreparably damaged in a matter of weeks. Join your local campaign whether your own library is directly threatened or not. Show it matters. Show you care. Don't let them take away our access to knowledge and our portal to self-improvement.

  • Don't forget, Saturday 5th Feb is Save Our Libraries Day. Get down your local library and show your support! Ideas for getting involved on the CILIP website.

  • Great film well done. Hope people watch it and then do something, watching is not enough you then need to write, email, protest and complain. Good luck.

  • they dont care wot you think of your libaries only you do, so if you can exept this you will exept all the other things they have planed, like selling of are forists to private corporatons. student fees, All This is'nt about money YOU FALLS, its about control an what they can get away with the trouble is you all still think you live in a democracy.controling freedom of speach, bye hipeing up terrisom, wake up people before its to late. THE WORLD IS CHANGEING FAST PLEASE KEEP UP

  • @fingleweed your post is the best example of why we NEED to keep libraries open that I could possibly imagine!

  • I put closing of libraries at the same level as the book burnings in Nazi Germany. A total disgrace!

  • "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need." Cicero

"Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest." Lady Bird Johnson

My family lives in Highbridge, statistically one of the most deprived wards in Somerset. Our need is great and yet we are to lose our library. Thanks for voicing our concerns.

  • @Digibee1 Hi, you may like to see the out takes on the website at welovelibraries.co.uk

  • The list of library closures at the end of the film made me gasp for air. It is the first time that I have seen the scale of the library cuts upon us.

  • Excellent. Some haunting comments, particularly the elderly man who passes his library and wonders how to stop the closures... Great music. Thanks.

  • I'm proud of Glastonbury and the way the whole community has raised their voice in unison. "Our books are not for burning!" Well done you guys for putting this together

  • Brilliant film that captures the madness of closing our libraries. In Gloucestershire we have a fantastic campaign group that are doing all possible to fight the closures - see youtube video of the march and speeches: 'Stroud Against the Cuts'.

  • Look out for the day of action to save your local library Feb 5 2011.

If you live in Lewisham look out for Sly and Reggie as they tour five Lewisham libraries on the Middle Class Sound System.

  • this is a cracking good film, guys! excellent, five stars, brilliant!
